  • In 2000, the number of people aged 65 and over increased to 3.37 million, accounting for 7.1% of the total population of South Korea. The elderly population will increase up to 19.3% in 2030. Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) seems to increase with age. More than 50-60% of old people complain of SDB-related signs and symptoms including awakening headache, excessive daytime sleepiness, fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, memory loss, personality changes, and depression. The influence of a mild degree of SDB upon the elderly is unclear, but moderate to severe SDB is well known to be associated with many diseases including hypertension, arrhythmia, myocardial infarction, stroke, dementia, and sudden death. Therefore, physicians should pay attention to elderly patients who complain of SDB related symptoms and signs that may not be normal signs of aging. Physicians need to become more sensitive to treat SDB in the elderly.

  • Low-temperature co-fired ceramics (LTCC) have turned out to be very promising technology in accordance with the rapid developments in semiconductor technology. The demands for compact electrical assemblies, smaller power loss as well as high signal density can be fulfilled by LTCC. And for the multi-layered ceramic devices with embedded passive components such as high dielectric constant decoupling capacitor, LTCC materials require the several conditions to avoid delamination and internal cracks. For the present study, diopside-based glass is chosen as the LTCC substrate material in view of its high coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). From the experimental resultsn the influence of each element on the CTE change can be revealed.

  • A magnetic-field tunable 2.4 GHz microwave bandpass filter having insertion loss < -5dB on an FR4 substrate with the flaky magnetic material was designed and characterized. The tunability in the designed bandpass filter was achieved by adhering soft magnetic materials on top of the device. This soft magnetic material can be composed of ferromagnetic substance or ferrimagnetic substance. The performance of the designed bandpass filter under its influence is investigated. The frequency offset ratio changes over 30 %. There is over 20 % change in the center frequency towards the lower frequency region due to this application. These magnetic material layers achieved the center frequency shift and bandwidth extension without actually changing the original structure of the device.

  • Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss and blindness among the elderly. In this study, extract of Vaccinium uliginosum L. that has potent antioxidant activity was evaluated as effective preventive supplement for AMD using AMD animal model induced by high fat diet and UV A irradiation. Treatment with VU extract protected photoreceptor cells of retina and blocked the accumulation of lipofuscin pigment-granules induced by high fat diet and UV A light irradiation. This study suggests that VU extract may be a useful agent for prevention of progress of AMD.

  • The native strain of serpins (serine protease inhibitors) has been recognized as a mechanism of biological regulation. Indeed, some stabilizing single residue mutations of human $\alpha$$_1$-antitrypsin, a prototype serpin, relieved local strain and caused the loss of inhibitory activity. The native strain of $\alpha$$_1$-antitrypsin is distributed throughout the whole molecule, but the strain that regulates the function directly is highly localized in the regions that appear to be mobilized during complex formation with a target protease.(omitted)

  • Ribbon type nanocrystalline alloy cores have shown excellent soft magnetic properties in the high frequency range because of small crystalline anisotropy and nearly zero magnetostriction[1]. In present, however ribbon alloys gives some limit in applications such as a large inductor and reactors of PFC circuit, which are required good DC bias property and low loss in the high frequency. Powder alloys with ultra fine grain structure can be an important way to overcome this kind of disadvantage, and to improve the high frequency soft magnetic properties in conventional metallic powder cores[2]. • In this paper, the Unilateral Fin-line structure and the I-Plane structure are analysed by Rayleigh-Ritz variational method including the effect of conductor thickness. And a com-putcr-aided design program, CADUNI, is developed for microwave I-plane and Unilateral Fin-Line bandpass filters. Unilateral Fin-Line Filters are desigied at the center frequency of 10.5 GHz with guided bandwidth between 5% and 24.6%. Measured insertion loss is between 0.17 and 0.25 dB, and center frequency deviation is less than 0.2%. Experimental results are in good agree-ment with theory.

  • Long-period wave oscillations in a harbor could create unacceptable vessel movements leading to the downtime of moored ships. It is practically very difficult to prevent long-period harbor oscillations, but extension of breakwaters at the harbor mouth could be a countermeasure in part. Narrowing a harbor mouth might give rise to increase in the energy loss due to flow separation near the mouth, which in turn makes resonant periods of the harbor become longer, especially for the first (or Helmholtz) resonant mode. • The ejector system is used for making a vacuum in an enclosed tank. This research represents the method to improve ejector performance by inserting a strut at the center of ejector outlet. This proposed ejector system is so simple and have a low cost to improve the ejector performance. There are many kinds of method for obtaining a lower vacuum pressure. The ejector is consists of nozzle, straight pipe and outlet diffuser and we focused on the outlet diffuser for high ejector performance. The strut is located at the center of ejector outlet diffuser. As the experimental result, we compared the vacuum pressure with and without a strut and without strut, and the ejector performance showed an improvement with 40% or more than the case without strut. This means that the stable fluid low energy loss was obtained by inserting the strut.
