  • In this paper, an analytical model for estimation of the time at which the concrete surface begins to dry is introduced to predict whether or not plastic shrinkage cracks occur. First of all, the validity of a consolidation model for bleeding of cement paste proposed by Tan et al. is verified by comparing the analytical results with the experimental results, and used to evaluate the rate and amount of bleed water of concrete. Also an analytical model for evaporation of bleed water which considers the effect of the temperature variation of concrete surface due to hydration heat on the evaporation rate is proposed, and the experimental and analytical results are then compared to verify the validity of the introduced model. In advance, the time at which the concrete surface begins to dry is estimated using above two analytical models, and compared with the experimental results about the time at which plastic shrinkage cracks occur. From the comparison, it is verified that the proposed model can predict the occurrence of plastic shrinkage cracking with comparative precision.

  • Using waste glass in concrete can cause crack and strength loss by the expansion of alkali-silica reaction(ASR). In this study, ASR expansion and properties of strength were analyzed in terms of brown waste glass content, and fibers(steel fiber, polypropylene fiber) and fiber content for reduction ASR expansion due to waste glass. In this accelerated ASTM C 1260 test of waste glass, pessimum content can not be found. Also, when used the fibers with waste g1ass, there is an effect on reduction of expansion and strength loss due to ASR between the alkali in the cement paste and the silica in the waste glass. Specially, adding 1.5 vol.% of steel fiber to 20% of waste glass the expansion ratio was reduced by 40% and flexural strength was developed by up to 110% comparing with only Waste glass ( $80^{\circ}C$ $H_{2}$ O curing).

  • If the concrete is exposed below freezing point of the outer temperature before hardened, the quality of the concrete will be lowered after hardened. Anti-freezing agent which doesn't corrode the steel bar and doesn't generate the alkali-aggregate reaction by noncholride recently developed in Japan and Northern Europe. But the effects of these agents are rarely known. Therefore, this study is desigend for analyzing the freezing properties at the condition of solution of solution and cement paste. And this study aims to present the reference data for practical use of the concrete works using anti-freezing agent.

  • Fine powder of $\alpha$-tricalcium phosphate, tetracalcium phosphate and dicalcium phosphate were mixed together to prepare self-setting cements which form hydroxyapatite, one of the well-known biocompatible materials, as the end of products of hydration. Hardening behaviour of the cements was examined at the temperature range of 37~$70^{\circ}C$ and 150~$250^{\circ}C$ under the normal and hydrothermal condition respectively. The conversion of cements into hydroxyapatite was significantly improved ast elevated temperature and the paste was strengtheed by interlocking of hydroxyapatite crystals, indicating that the strength is determined by microtexture rather the amount of conversion of cements into hydroxyapatite.

  • The elastic modulus of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) can be evaluated by using composite models with experiment. In this study, Hashin's composite model was adapted to evaluate elastic modulus considering physical properties of recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) that mortar is attached. Elastic modulus testes for cement paste, mortar and recycled coarse aggregate concrete were carried out considering W/C and recycled coarse aggregate content rate. As a result, the elastic modulus of RAC was evaluated comparing with both experiment results and the existing estimation formula. Those can be used for further studies as a preliminary data.

  • In this study, the effects of the fineness modulus of reactive aggregate on ASR expansion and ASR products have been investigated. The reactive aggregate used was metamorphic aggregate originated from Korea. ASR tests were conducted according to accelerated mortar bar test. The morphology and chemical composition of products formed in mortar bars, 5 years after the mortar bar test had been performed, were studied by scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy. Test results indicated that ASR expansion of mortar bars decrease in linear proportion to the fineness modulus of reactive aggregate. SEM images indicated that mortar bars showed reactive products formed in cement paste, within air voids and within cracks through particles except for the mortar bar with the fineness modulus of 3.25. The EDS analysis of the reactive products showed presence of silica, calcium and sodium, typical of ASR product composition.

  • Using waste glass in concrete can cause crack and strength loss by the expansion of alkali-silica reaction(ASR). In this study, ASR expansion and properties of strength were analyzed in terms of clear waste glass grading, and by-products(fly ash, blast-furnace slag) and by-products content for reduction ASR expansion due to waste glass. In this accelerated ASTM C 1260 test of waste glass, pessimum grading can be found. Also, when the by-products are used with waste glass, there is an effect on reduction of expansion and strength loss due to ASR between the alkali in the cement paste and the silica in the waste glass.

  • The production of waste glasses has been increased with the development of industry. The utilization of waste glass for concrete can cause the concrete to be cracked and to be weakened due to an expansion by alkali-silica reaction(ASR). When used the fibers with waste glass, there is an effect on reduction of expansion and strength loss due to ASR between the alkali in the cement paste and the silica in the waste glass. In this study, we conducted basic experimental research to analyze the possibilities of recycling of amber waste glass as fine aggregates for steel fiber reinforced concrete. Test results of fresh concrete. slump is decreased because grain shape is angular and air content is increased due to involving small size particles so much in waste glasses. Also. tensile and flexural strengths increased as the content of steel fibers increased. In conclusion, the content of waste glass below 40% is reasonable and usage of pertinent admixture is necessary to obtain workability or air content.

  • The deterioration of concrete due to sulfate ions in various sulfate environments such as groundwater, soil and seawater is one of important factors degrading the durability of concrete structure. The aim of this paper is to evaluate on the magnesium sulfate alttack resistance of mortars with silica fume. In this study, compressive strength loss and length change of prismatic mortars, containing silica fume, immersed in 5% magnesium sulfate solution for 270 days were investigated. Additionally, paste powders with same binder were used to observe reactants of cement matrices through the instrumental analysis such as XRD, SEM and MIP. Results obtained from this study indicate that the greater damaging effects of the magnesium soulution are due to the decomposition of the C-S-H gel to M-C-S-H.

  • This paper describes the numerical calculation of elastic properties of a simulated microstructure of cement paste from very early age, when most previous models fail to give accurate results. The development of elastic properties of tricalcium silicate pastes was calculated by discretising a numerical resolution-free 3D vector microstructure to a regular cubic mesh. Due to the connections formed in the microstructure as an artefact of the meshing procedure, the simulated elastic moduli were found to be higher than expected. Furthermore, the percolation of the solids was found to occur even before hydration started. A procedure to remove these artefacts, on the basis of the information available in the vector microstructures was developed. After this correction, a better agreement of the experimental results with calculations was obtained between 20% and 40% hydration. However, percolation threshold was found to be delayed significantly. More realistic estimates of percolation threshold were obtained if either flocculation or a densification of calcium silicate hydrate with hydration was assumed.
