Recently, problems related to vibrations of decomposed granite soils have acquired increasing attention in Korea because those soils cover approximately one third of the country. Both resonant column and cyclic triaxial test were performed to investigate deformation characteristics of unsaturated and cement-mixed decomposed granite soils in Suwon region. The important soil parameters in this respect are the shear moduli, dynamic moduli of elasticity and damping ratios. The dynamic parameters are influenced by variables such as strain amplitude, ratio of loading cycles, and degree of saturations, etc. Test results and data have shown that the optimum degree of saturation to the maximum shear modulus due to a capillary menisci effect was about 17~18 % at low strain amplitude and 10~15 % at intermediate strain amplitude. This paper suggests the range of threshold strain and mean shear modulus of decomposed granite soils in Suwon region. It also proposed the empirical relationship between the dynamic parameters for cement-mixed and non-mixed decomposed granite soils.

In installation of groundwater wells, grouting materials are injected between the groundwater borehole and the inner casing in order to prevent infiltration of contaminated groundwater from the top soil layers into wells. The injection device of grouting materials is commonly composed of an inlet head device with an expansion packer, a cylinder capable of storing the grouting materials, and an air cylinder. In this work, two types of common grouting materials, silicon and cement materials, were tested for their performances as grouting media. For silicon. silicon was mixed with clay or calcite, and tested for their tensile strength and underwater reactivity. Both silicon-clay and silicon-calcite mixtures had adequate flow and adhesiveness. For cement material, general cement, ultra-rapid harding cement, and natural cement were respectively mixed with three different soil types including coarse-grained granite, fine-grained granite, and gneiss, and direct shearing tests were conducted after hardening. Under grouting depth condition of 30 m, the minimum adhesive strength was greater for weathered gneiss than non-weathered gneiss with its maximum values obtained from the mixtures of ultra rapid-harding cement.
In this study, geotechnical tests including unconfined compression test were carried out to evaluate the ground improvement effect of the hardening agent, which has been developed by using inter-chemical reactions between slag, fly ash, phosphogypsum and bypass dust on the weathered granite soil and dredged marine clay. Test results show that the strength of weathered granite soil mixed with hardening agent B-2, which uses phosphogypsum as an activator, is higher than that of B-1, which uses bypass dust as an activator. Strengths of B-1 & B-2 hardening agent mixed soil show only 44%~60% of strength of OPC(Ordinary Portland Cement, OPC) mixed soil. However, since B-1 and B-2 agents are made of industrial by-products, they seem economically more effective than ordinary portland cement as well as other present hardening agents. Test results on dredged marine clay show that unconfined compression strength increases with amount of agent and curing days. Unconfined compression strength of 14% B-1 agent mixed soil increases linearly with curing days and reaches only 40% of OPC mixed soil. While unconfined compression strength of 14% B-2 agent mixed soil increases exponentially and reaches 133% of OPC mixed soil. Relationship between deformation modulus and unconfined compression strength of B-1 and B-2 mixed soil can be expressed as $E_{50}=(20{\sim}47)_{qu,28}$, which is similar with lower limit of OPC mixed dredged marine clay.

This study was attempted to investigate the effects of delayed compaction on the unconfined compressive strengh and dry density of Soil-cement mixtures. Soil-cement construction is a time-consuming procedure. Time-delay is known as a detrimental factor to lower the quality of soil-cement layer. A laboratory test was performed using coarse and fine weathered granite soils. The soils were mixed with 7% cement at optimum moisture content and excess moisture content in part. Socondary additives such as lime, gypsum-plaster, flyash and sugar were tried to counteract the detri-mental effect of delayed compaction. The specimens were compacted by Harvard Miniature Compaction Apparatus at 0,1,2,4,6 hors after mixing. Two kinds of compactive efforts(9 kgf and 18 kgf tamper) were applied. The results were summarized as follows: 1.With the increase of time delay, the decrease rate of dry density of the specimen compacted by 9 kgf tamper was steeper than that of the specimen compacted by 18kgf tamper. In the same manner, soil-B had steeper decreasing rate of dry density than soil-A. 2.Based on the results of delayed compaction tests, the dry density and unconfined compressive sterngth were rapidly decreased in the early 2 hours delay, while those were slowly decreased during the time delay of 2 to 6 hours. 3.The dry density and unconfined compressive strength were increased by addition of 3% excess water to the optimum moisture content during the time delay of 2 to 6 hours. 4.Without time delay in compaction, the dry densities of soil-A were increased by adding secondary additives such as lime, gypsum-plaster, flyash and sugar, on the other hand, those of soil-B were decreased except for the case of sugar. 5.The use of secondary additives like lime, gypsum-plaster, flyash and sugar could reduce the decrease of unconfined compressive strength due to delayed compaction. Among them, lime was the most effective. 6.From the above mentioned results, several recommendations could be suggested in order to compensate for losses of unconfined compressive strenght and densit v due to delayed compaction. They are a) to use coarse-grained granite soil rather than fined-grained one, b) to add about 3% excess compaction moisture content, c) to increase compactive effort to a certain degree, and d) to use secondary additives like line gypsum-plaster, flyash, and sugar in proper quantity depending on the soil types.
The purpose of this study was to examine the proper mixing ratio of ordinary portland cement and Bottom Ash to recycle the Bottom Ash, which is an industrial waste. After the evaluation, the compressive strength and durability were assessed using the mixture of completely weathered soil (Hwangto), weathered granite soil, and Bentonite. Then environmental friendliness of this mixed material was examined through heavy metal leaching method. It was found out that proper mixing ratio is 6:4, and that the 6% mixture quantity of completely weathered soil (Hwangto), weathered granite soil, and Bentonite is the most effective for compressive strength and durability It was also found out through heavy metal leaching method that the Bottom Ash could be below the standard of the Clean Water Law.

The mono-layer cover system is composed of soils only as a filling material and various plants are planted on the surface to control the water balance in the cover system. In this paper, the mono-layer cover system was considered as an alternative landfill final cover system and developed a model that could utilize industrial by-product (especially, coal ash & phosphogypsum) as additive filling materials. The mixture of granite soil, coal ash, and phosphogypsum was placed as a cover material in a box constructed with cement. Laboratory tests were carried out to investigate the environmental effect on the utilization of coal ash & phosphogypsum and to determine the mxing ratio of each materials. In the leaching test, all materials showed lower heavy metal concentration than the threshold values of regulation. The optimum mixing ratio of materials which was applied to field model test was determined to soil (4) : coal ash (1) : phosphogypsum (1) on the volume base. Field model tests were continued from February to July, 2004 in the soil box that was constructed with cement block. It was verified that coal ash and phospogypsum mixed with soil was to be safe environmentally and the water balance of mono-layer cover system was reasonable.

This study will not only prove experimental dynamic properties which are classified to slump, compressive strength, tensile strength, flexure strength and toughness granite soil concrete with a fine aggregate of granite soil and blast-furnace cement and polypropylene fiber over 45 mm, but also establish a basic data in order to use environment-friendly pavement through prove useful pavement mixed with granite and polypropylene (PP) fiber which is a kind of material to prevent a dry shrinkage clack, a partial destruction and useful and light. The value of slump test was gradually increased by PP fiber volume 3 $kgf/m^3$, but compressive strength took a sudden turn for the worse from 5 $kgf/m^3$. The compressive strength indicated a range of 13.72~18.35 MPa. On the contrary to compressive strength, the tensile strength showed to decrease with rising PP fiber volume, and the tensile strength indicated a range of 1.43~1.64 MPa. The tensile strength was stronger about 2~15 % in case of mixing with PP fiber volume than normal concrete. The flexural strength indicated a range of 2.76~3.41 MPa. The flexural strength was stronger about 20 % in case of PP fiber volume 0 $kg/m^3$ than PP fiber volume 9 $kg/m^3$. The toughness indicated a range of 0~25.46 $N{\cdot}mm$ and increased proportionally with PP fiber volume. The toughness was stronger about 8.3 times in case of PP fiber volume 9 $kg/m^3$ than PP fiber volume 1 $kg/m^3$. The pavement with PP fiber volume over such a fixed quantity in the park roads and walkways can have a effect to prevent not only resistance against clack but also rip off failures.
Although the soil nailing method is generally used as a gravity grouting, the development and application of pressurized grouting method has recently increased to address the problem of joint generation and filling due to grouting. Pressurized grouting of the soil nailing method is generally used in combination with ordinary portland cement and water. In the field, the cement is mixed with the rapid setting cement to reduce curing time because ordinary portland cement takes more than 10 days to satisfy the required strength. In this study, uniaxial compression tests and laboratory tests were carried out to confirm the efficiency of the grouting material according to the mixing ratio of rapid setting cement. The mixing ratio of 30% grouting satisfies the required strength within 7 days and satisfies the optimum gel time. As a result of the laboratory test with granite weathered soil, the reinforcing effect was confirmed to be 1.5 times as compared with the gravity type at an injection time of 10 seconds and a strain of 15%. The friction resistance increases linearly with the increase of the injection time, but it is confirmed that the friction resistance decreases due to the hydraulic fracturing effect at the injection time exceeding the limit injection pressure. Numerical analysis was performed to compare the stability of slopes not reinforced with slopes reinforced with gravity and pressurized soil nailing.
This research is an experimental work of developing a construction material using municipal wastewater sludge as liner and cover materials for waste disposal landfill. Weathered granite soil and flyash, produced as a by-product in the power plant, were used as the primary additives to improve geotechnical engineering properties of sludge. For secondary additives, bentonite and cement were mixed with sludge to decrease the permeability and to increase the shear strength, respectively. Various laboratory test required to evaluate the design criteria for liner and cover materials, were carried out by changing the mixing ratio of sludge with the additives. Basic soil properties such as specific gravity, grain size distribution, liquid and plastic limits were measured to analyze their effects on permeability, compaction, compressibility and shear strength properties of mixtures. Laboratory compaction tests were conducted to find the maximum dry densities and the optimum moisture contents of mixtures, and their effectiveness of compaction in field was consequently evaluated. Permeability tests of variable heads with compacted samples, and the stress-controlled consolidation tests with measuring permeabilities of samples during consolidation process were performed to obtain permeability, and to find the compressibility as well as consolidational coefficients of mixtures, respectively. To evaluate the long term stability of sludges, creep tests were also conducted in parallel with permeability tests of variable heads. On the other hand, for the compacted sludge decomposed for a month, permeability tests were carried out to investigate the effect of decomposition of organic matters in sludges on its permeability. Direct shear tests were performed to evaluate the shear strength parameters of mixed sludge with weathered granite, flyash and bentonite. For the mixture of sludge with cement, unconfined compression tests were carried out to find their strength with varying mixing ratio and curing time. On the other hand, CBR tests for compacted specimen were also conducted to evaluate the trafficability of mixtures. Various test results with mixtures were assessed to evaluate whether their properties meet the requirements as liner and cover materials in waste disposal landfill.
In this study, the utilization of coal-ash and phosphogypsum was considered as the evapotranspiration final landfill cover(ET cover) material. Cover material considered was the mixture of the weathered granite soil, coal-ash and phosphogypsum and so we sequentially performed the leaching test, column test and field model test to investigate the environmental effects of mixtures of coal-ash and phosphogypsum. In the leaching test, all materials had lower heavy metal concentration than the regulated threshold values. The column test and the review of related regulations were carried out to determine the optimum mixing ratio(OMR) and OMR was soil(4):coal-ash(1): phosphogypsum(1) on the volume base, which was applied to field model test. Field model tests were continued from February to June, 2004 in the soil box that was constructed with cement block. It was verified that coal-ash and phospogypsum mixed with soil was safe environmentally and the mixture of both wastes could improve the water retention capacity of cover materials.
