The aim of the research is to provide rheological properties of cement paste with various qualities of coal ash including fly ash, raw ash, and reject ash. Generally, fly ash is the well known supplementrary cementitious materials for concrete and is used to improve various properties. Although fly ash is obtained as a byproduct of fire powder plant, still reject ash is wasted from raw ash. In this research, thus, to provide a fundamental information on using not only fly ash but also raw ash or reject ash for cementitious materials, a rheological properties of cement paste was studied with three different coal ash. This research was conducted from particle conditions of three different coal ashes to rheological properties in cement paste phase. According to the expeirment, reject ash was consisted with large and coagulated particles although fly ash was consisted with a small and spherical shaped particles. based on the particle conditions of various coal ashes, rheological behaviors were tested, and it was shown as the coal ashes improved the fluidity of cement paste. Specifically, depending on the particle distributions of cement paste, it is considered that the viscosity of paste can be controlled.

It is known that physical and chemical changes of cement hydrates cause problems in the volume stability of concrete. In order to overcome these problems, there is a growing interest in research on mixing technology of cement-based materials and nanomaterials. Among the nanomaterials, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are attracting attention due to their excellent mechanical properties. The CNTs are made of cylindrically shaped graphene sheets. According to the number of sheets, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are classified. Although the SWCNT has superior mechanical properties, the research using MWCNT is vigorous due to the difficulty of marketability and manufacturing, but the research using SWCNT is insufficient. In this study, we investigate the effect of SWCNT on the formation of hydrate of cement paste by observing the microstructure of broken cement paste after measuring the flexural strength of cement paste with SWCNT dispersion.

Influence of characters of fly ash on the fluidity of cement paste with polycarboxylic acid type superplasticizer has been investigated in connection with the particle size of distribution, unburned carbon content, specific surface area and shape of fly ash. The fluidity of paste is increased with increasing roundness of fly ash and it is decreased with increasing n-value of Rosin-Rammler distribution function. There is a linear correlation between roundness/n-value and fluidity of fly ash cement paste.

The percolation threshold of the CNT-reinforced cement paste is closely related to the optimal CNT amount to maximize the sensing ability of self-sensing concrete. However, the percolation threshold has various values depending on the cement, CNT, and water-to-cement ratio used. In this study, a percolation simulation model was proposed to predict the percolation threshold of the CNT-reinforced cement paste. The proposed model can simulate the percolation according to the amount of CNT using only the properties of CNT and cement, and for this, the concept of the number of aggregated CNT particles was used. The percolation simulation consists of forming a pre-hydrated cement paste model, random dispersion of CNTs, and percolation investigation. The simulation used CNT-reinforced cement paste with a water-cement ratio of 0.4 to 0.6, and the simulated percolation threshold point showed high accuracy with a simulation residual ratio of up to 7.5 % compared to the literature results.

Osmotic pressure induced by semi-permeability of hardened cement pasts and cement mortar was studied, which was considered to be a cause of failure such as separation and blistering of floor coatings or wall coatings from the concrete substrate. The specimens with a water cement ratio of 45, 60 and 75% were installed between the solution of sodium chloride and distilled water. First, we measured water flux from distilled water to sodium chloride and the ion flux of Na+ and Cl- through the specimens. Then, we measured osmotic pressure induced by semi-permeability of the specimens using an apparatus which was specially developed for this study. It was made clear that hardened cement paste and cement mortar have properties of semipermeability, and the osmotic pressure is closely related to their water cement ratio. Finally, we calculated the osmotic pressure according to Staverman's equation, which was obtained for organic membranes, and tried to explain quantitatively the observed pressure.

This study evaluated the mechanical properties and microstructure of calcium silicate cement based paste according to carbonation curing conditions. As a result, both compressive strength and carbonation depth increased with the carbonation curing period.
The use of ground fly ash in concrete can increase the risk of slump loss due to the drastic surface change of the particles after the grinding treatment and the accelerated reaction compared to the untreated ash. This study is aimed at the early age hydration and time-dependent rheology changes of cement paste containing ground fly ash. An original fly ash is ground into different fineness and the hydration of cement paste containing the ground fly ash is monitored with the ultrasound propagation method. The zeta potentials of the solid particles are measured and the changes of rheological parameters of the cement pastes with time are analyzed with a rheometer. A particle packing model is used to probe packing of the solid particles. The results show that the early age hydration of the paste is strongly promoted by replacing Portland cement with fly ash up to 30 percent (by mass), causing increase of the yield stress of the paste. The viscosity of a paste containing ground fly ash is lower than that containing the untreated ash, which is explained by the denser packing of the solid particles.

When concrete is exposed to fire, the decomposition of Portland cement paste results in critical damage to the concrete structure of a building. Although the behavior of cement pastes after heating provides crucial information with respect to the reuse of the building exposed to fire, the recovery process of the damaged concrete structure has not yet been fully elucidated. In addition, research on appropriate additives such as carbon nanotube (CNT) has been increasing recently, however, investigation of CNT incorporated cement paste after decomposition of CNT by high temperature is not fully investigated. In this study, we investigated the physicochemical properties of CNT incorporated cement paste under different temperatures (200℃, 500℃ and 800℃). Also, the effects of different rehydration conditions (20℃ 60% RH and in water for different curing times) on the recovery of the paste were studied. The changes in tensile and compressive strength, surface observation of the specimens were characterized. In addition, the decomposition and formation of hydrates in the paste due to the heating process were studied using X-ray diffraction.

The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of AFm formation on the stiffening process of cement paste. High and low alkali sulfate clinkers were used for the experiments. The flow and stiffening behavior of cement paste was investigated using modified ASTM C403 penetration resistance test and oscillatory shear rheology. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) was used for phase identification associated with stiffening of the paste. It was found from the results that low alkali clinker mixture produced very strong premature stiffening whereas high alkali clinker mixture did not cause premature stiffening. This is because of the large amount of alkali sulfate present in the clinker. Addition of calcium and sodium chloride to the high alkali clinker mixture caused faster stiffening and set.
In this study, the freezing and thawing resistance in sea-water of hardened cement paste was investigated by adding slag, diatomaceous earth and fly ash as blending materials and air entraining agent and superplasticizer as admixtures to the cement paste. The structure of hardened cement pate was densified by potential hydraulic properties and pozzolan reactivities of materials and the freezing and thawing resistance of the paste was improved with the effect blending materials and admixtures. As the blending materials were added to the paste, the quantity of C3A was relatively reduced and the formation of expansive ettringite was suppressed to decrease the penetration of sea-water or Cl-, SO42-ion, and then freeze-thaw resistance was enhanced. Particulary, when 40% of slag was mixed, the resistance was excellent.
