  • Nitrite-type hydrocalumite (calumite) is a material that can adsorb the chloride ions ($Cl^-$)that cause the corrosion of reinforcing bars and liberate the nitrite ions ($NO_2{^-}$) that inhibit corrosion in reinforced concrete, and can provide a self-corrosion inhibition function to the reinforced concrete. In this study, VA/E/MMA-modified mortars with calumite were prepared with various calumite contents and polymer binder-ratios, and tested for corrosion inhibition, chloride ion penetration, carbonation and drying shrinkage. As a result, regardless of polymer-binder ratio, the replacement of ordinary Portland cement with hydrocalumite has a marked effect on the corrosion inhibiting property of the polymer-modified mortars. However, chloride ion penetration and carbonation depths are somewhat increased with higher calumite content, but can be remarkably decreased depending on the polymer-binder ratios. The 28-d drying shrinkage shows a tendency to increase with the polymer-binder ratio and calumite content. VA/E/MMA-Modified mortars with 10 % calumite did not satisfy KS requirements. Accordingly, a calumite content of 5 % is recommended for the VA/E/MMA-modified mortars with calumite.

  • Some recent researches reported that high temperature rising decreases the carbonation depth of concrete, which is contrary to the previous research results. Carbonation has been known as a reaction between calcium hydroxide and carbon dioxide. But a few researches showed that the other cement hydrates as well as calcium hydroxide react with carbon dioxide. This paper investigates the influence of temperature on carbonation and the variation of $Ca(OH)_2$ and $CaCO_3$ by carbonation. In order to estimate the carbonation depth and the quantities of reactant and product of carbonation reaction, phenolphthalein testing and thermagravimetric analyzer test were conducted. The measurement of carbonation depth with temperature showed that the temperature increase from $20^{\circ}C$ to $30^{\circ}C$C in carbonation environment makes the carbonation depth larger, but the increase from $30^{\circ}C$ to $40^{\circ}C$ has a small influence on the carbonation depth. Comparing calcium hydroxide and calcium carbonate with temperature, the quantity of $CaCO_3$ of specimen carbonated at $30^{\circ}C$ is greater than that of specimen carbonated at $40^{\circ}C$ and the quantity of $Ca(OH)_2$ of specimen carbonated at $30^{\circ}C$ is similar to that of specimen carbonated at $40^{\circ}C$. This observation shows that there is the optimum temperature increasing carbonation depth and the optimum temperature is close to $30^{\circ}C$.

  • The ultrasonic waves for monitoring concrete materials have been used to investigate the setting and hardening process of concrete. This paper presents the application of bender elements for monitoring the hardening properties of Controlled Low Strength Material (CLSM) and the characterization of shear waves in CLSM according to curing time. To ensure the early age properties and flow, the CLSM consists of CSA cement, sand, silt, water, fly ash, and accelerator. In addition, three different type specimens according to fine contents are mixed. A couple of bender elements are installed at the wall of measurement cell and the CLSM specimen are prepared at the measurement cell for 28 days. Experimental results show that the resonant frequency and shear wave velocities increase with an increase in the curing time, regardless of the fine contents. Up to ten hours, the amplitudes of shear waves also increase, and the resonant frequency and shear wave velocities at the same time increase as the fine contents increase. The shear wave measurement technique using the bender elements may be effectively used to evaluate the hardening properties of CLSM along the curing time.

  • Fly ash(FA) which is a byproduct in the coal combustion in thermal power plant contributes to pore structure densification due to pozzolanic reaction, and this leads to long-term strength development and excellent resistance to chloride penetration. In the work, compressive strength and chloride resistance in OPC(Ordinary Portland Cement) and FA-based concrete are evaluated, and the relationships are investigated considering ages. For the work, 3 different W/B (Water to Binder) ratios of 37%, 42%, and 47% are prepared, and 3 substitution ratio of fly ash(0%, 30%, and 50%) are considered as well. At the age of 28 days and 180 days, test results of compressive strength, diffusion coefficients based on Tang's method, and passed charges referred to ASTM C 1202 and KS F 2711 are obtained. With increasing replacement ratio of FA and decreasing W/B, the resistances to chlorides(diffusion coefficient and passed charge) are improved, and the results at the age of 180 days decrease to only 15% level at the age of 28 days due to pozzolanic reaction in FA 50 mixture, which shows that resistance to chloride is much dependent on age effect than strength development. After 180 days, more clear linear relationships are observed between strength and resistance to chloride.

  • This paper presents the mix composition, production method, and curing condition applied to the extruded ECC(Engineered Cementitious Composite) panel which are able to exhibit multiple cracking and potential pseudo strain-hardening behavior. In addition to the production technique of extruded ECC panel, the effect of fiber distribution characteristics, which are uniquely created by applying extrusion process, on the flexural behavior of the panel is also focussed. In order to demonstrate fiber distribution, a series of experiments and analyses, including image processing/analysis and micro-mechanical analysis, was performed. The optimum mix composition of extruded ECC panel was determined in terms of water matrix ratio, the amount of cement, ECC powder, and silica powder. It was found that flexural behavior of extruded ECC panel was highly affected by the slight difference in mix composition of ECC panel. This is mainly because the difference in mix composition results in the change of micro-mechanical properties as well as fiber distribution characteristics, represented by fiber dispersion and orientation. In terms of the average fiber orientation, the fiber distribution was found to be similar to the assumption of two dimensional random distribution, irrespective of mix composition. In contrast, the probability density function for fiber orientation was measured to be quite different depending on the mix composition.

  • The KHC Test Road project was initiated on 1991 to develop Korean Pavement Design Guide. It was constructed along the Joongbu Inland Expressway line between Yeoju and Gamgok. It is two-lane wide expressway containing fifteen asphalt and twenty-five Portland cement concrete test pavement sections. Various sensors were installed in the Test Road to evaluate the behavior of test pavement sections under the influence of traffic load and environmental change. The most important issues in the sensor installation are the accurate location and long-term survivability. They are directly influenced by the sensor installation methodology. The methodology for asphalt strain gages is mainly discussed in this paper because it is the second important sensors in the KHC Test Road project. In order to find the best methodology, we evaluated existing methodology from prior experience and several conducted test installations. We have tried mound, block out, and trench cuts since 2000. Among three methods, block out was the most effective one in terms of accurate location, long-term survivability, and material homogeneity. However, this method cannot be applied to the wearing coarse so that the mound method was used as an alternative. The block out method was applied to base and intermediate layers while the mound method was used to the wearing coarse. Three hundred seventy-four asphalt strain gauges were installed on asphalt pavement sections from September 3rd to November 18th in 2002. According to the sensor measurement evaluation, 6.3% of sensor demonstrated over ranged readings for mound method installation and 2.5% did for block out method installation. We lost only two sensors during the installation. It is 99.5% survival and it is excellent survival rate according to other experience.

  • As the amount of $CO_2$ emission in Korea is ranked 9th and the increasing rate of $CO_2$ emissions highest in the world, it is strongly necessary to devise methods to decrease the amount of $CO_2$ in each industry as the basis of establishing environmentally sustainable production system. This paper aims to identify the characteristics of $CO_2$ emissions from construction wastes throughout the simplified LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) and suggest the strategic guideline for the construction waste management plan to decrease $CO_2$. As a result of LCA on the case of a high-rise residential building project, total sum of $CO_2$ emission generated from construction wastes appeared as 6,818,123kg-$CO_2$ and $CO_2$ emission per unit floor area as 21.01kg-$CO_2/{\beta}{\ge}$. The principal waste materials generating more than 95% of $CO_2$ are materials such as reinforcing bar, temporary materials, cement, ready-mixed-concrete, concrete products, and tile, which have relatively high unit emission rate of $CO_2$ in the process of production. Besides, more than 92% of $CO_2$ was generated from the activities such as structure work, plaster work, temporary work, and tile and stone work, which are generally executed in the early phase of the whole construction period. Reflecting these results, the guideline for the construction waste management plan was recommended. If the waste management plan is established considering the guideline suggested, there would be high potential to decrease the amount of $CO_2$ generated from construction wastes.

  • The fiber dispersion performance in fiber-reinforced cementitious composites is a crucial factor with respect to achieving desired mechanical performance. However, evaluation of the fiber dispersion performance in the composite PVA-ECC (Polyvinyl alcohol-Engineered Cementitious Composite) is extremely challenging because of the low contrast of PVA fibers with the cement-based matrix. In the present work, an enhanced fiber detection technique is developed and demonstrated. Using a fluorescence technique on the PVA-ECC, PVA fibers are observed as green dots in the cross-section of the composite. After capturing the fluorescence image with a Charged Couple Device (CCD) camera through a microscope. The fibers are more accurately detected by employing a series of process based on a categorization, watershed segmentation, and morphological reconstruction.

  • The paper presents experimental results of self-healing effects of OPC-GGBFS paste with cracked and uncracked specimens. The self-healing of cracked specimens is processes of crack closing with re-hydration of unhydrated in crack surface. The OPC paste with GGBFS replacement ratios of 0%, 10%, 20% and 30% were prepared having a constant water-binder ratios of 0.5. The OPC-GGBFS paste specimens immersed in tap-water and sea-water. The temperature of tap and sea-water was $5^{\circ}C$, $15^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$. The cracked specimens after deterioration were immersed for 60 days. The relationship between self-healing effect and age-effect was calculate based upon the experimental results. The self-healing effect was measured in ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) before and after loading. When the relative change rate of UPV is increases with the increase in GGBFS replacement ratios. Moreover, the self-healing effect is increased with the temperature of tap-water is increase. But the cracked specimens immersed in sea-water was unclear effects of different temperature. Furemore, most of the healing for OPC-GGBFS specimens immersed in tap-water and sea-water occurred during the first 30 days. The self-healing effect until 30 days is higher than that the age-effect. After 30 days, self-effect and age-effect was largely decreases. SEM/EDS analysis of crack on the surface of the specimens in tap-water were covered with aragonite, and sea-water were covered with brucite.

  • In this paper, the properties of an expansive agent (CaO-CaS $O_4$) for dry shrinkage compensation were investigated by a series of experimental program, which might be used at On-Dol heating system as mortar type. The expansion principle of the CaO-CaS $O_4$ was mainly verified. As a result of this study, the correlation between the content of the expansive agent and the compressive strength was obtained in the form of exponential function(Y = A $e^{-x}$), showing that as the content of expansive agent increased as the expansion performance with the compressive strength increased by only a certain amount. Also, as a results of the analysis of a correlation between the expansive performance and the chemical properties which generally accompanied a part of quality management in manufacturing the expensive cement, the expansive performance was relative to only the contents of the F-CaO among chemical properties(Blaine, +44$\mu\textrm{m}$R, F-CaO, S $O_3$,L.O.I). And it was clarified that the results were relative to the second order function, showing that if the contents of the F-CaO increased the expansive performance Increased.d.
