Fiber surface morphologies and associated internal structures are closely related to its properties. Unlike other fibers including cotton, bast fibers possess transverse nodes and fissures in cross-sectional and longitudinal directions. Their morphologies and associated internal structures were anatomically examined under the scanning electron microscope. The results showed that the morphologies of the nodes and the fissures of bast fibers varied depending on the construction of the inner fibril cellular layers. The transverse nodes and fissures were formed by the folding and spiralling of the cellular layers during plant growth. The dimensions of nodes and fissures were determined by the dislocations of the cellular layers. There were also many longitudinal fissures in bast fibers. Some deep longitudinal fissures even opened the fiber lumen for a short way along the fiber. In addition, the lumen channel of the bast fibers could be disturbed or disrupted by the nodes and the spirals of the internal cellular layers. The existence of the transverse nodes and fissures in the bast fibers could degrade the fiber mechanical properties, whereas the longitudinal fissures may contribute to the very rapid moisture absorption and desorption.
Recently, cross-layer design approach has been greatly attracting researchers' attention as an alternative for improving the performance of wireless data networks. The main reason why cross-layer approaches are particularly well suited for wireless networks is that there exists direct coupling between physical layer and upper layers. Therefore, with cross-layer approach, the protocol designers try to exploit the interaction between layers and promote adaptability at all layers, based on information exchange between layers. In this article we focus on the cross-layer engineering for high data-rate mobile Internet services through cellular networks. First, the general considerations in cross-layer engineering are outlined. Then, we discuss the common approach in literatures, which mainly deals with adaptability in physical and medium access control layer. Finally, we show that the cross-layer engineering taking account of all layers is more adequate for the mobile Internet services cellular network.

Laminated composite structures find wide range of applications in many branches of technology. They are much suited for weight sensitive structures (like aircraft) where thinner and lighter members made of advanced fiber reinforced composite materials are used. The orientations of fiber direction in layers and number of layers and the thickness of the layers as well as material of composites play a major role in determining the strength and stiffness. Thus the basic design problem is to determine the optimum stacking sequence in terms of laminate thickness, material and fiber orientation. In this paper, a new optimization technique called Cellular Automata (CA) has been combined with Genetic Algorithm (GA) to develop a different search and optimization algorithm, known as Cellular Genetic Algorithm (CGA), which considers the laminate thickness, angle of fiber orientation and the fiber material as discrete variables. This CGA has been successfully applied to obtain the optimal fiber orientation, thickness and material lay-up for multi-layered composite hybrid beams plates and shells subjected to static buckling and dynamic constraints.
The multicellular layers(MCL) of human cancer cells is a three dimensional(3D) in vitro model for human solid tumors which has been used primarily for the assessment of avascular penetration of anti-cancer drugs. For anti-cancer drugs with penetration problem, MCL represents a good experimental model that can provide clinically relevant data. Calcein-AM is a fluorescent dye that demonstrates the cellular vitality in a graded manner in cancer cell culture system. In the present study, we evaluated the use of calcein-AM for determination of anti-proliferative activity of anti-cancer agents in MCL model of DLD-1 human colorectal cancer cells. Optical sectioning of confocal imaging was compromised with photonic attenuation and penetration barrier in the deep layers of MCL. By contrast, fluorescent measurement on the cryo-sections provided a feasible alternative. Cold pre-incubation did not enhance the calcein-AM distribution to a significant degree in MCL of DLD-1 cells. However, the simultaneous determination of drug penetration and cellular vitality appeared to be possible in drug treated MCL. In conclusion, these data suggest that calcein-AM can be used for the simultaneous determination of drug-induced anti-proliferative effect and drug penetration in MCL model.

We have developed bio-system derived algorithm: Leaf Cellular Automata(LCA). LCA are one form of cellular automata. LCA are reffered to activity of a leaf. LCA have four layers: the "CO$_2$ Layer", the "Stoma Layer", the "Starch Layer" and the "Water Layer". In order to evaluate this optimization algorithm, we used a pattern matching problem.

Quantum-dot cellular automata(QCA) is a computing model designed to be similar to cellular automata, and an alternative technology for next generation using high performance and low power consumption. QCA is undergoing various studies with recent experimental results, and it is one of the paradigms of transistors that can solve device density and interconnection problems as nano-unit materials. An XOR gate is a gate that operates so that the result is true when either one of the logic is true. The proposed XOR gate consists of five layers. The first layer consists of OR gates, the third and fifth layers consist of AND gates, and the second and fourth layers are designed as passages in the middle. The half adder consists of an XOR gate and an AND gate. The proposed half adder is designed by adding two cells to the proposed XOR gate. The proposed half adder consists of fewer cells, total area, and clock than the conventional half adder.

A geometrically nonlinear stability analysis of sandwich annular plates with cellular core and particle-reinforced composite layers has been performed in the present research. The particles are powders of graphene oxide (GOP) which act as nanoscale filler of epoxy matrix. To this regard, Halpin-Tsai micromechanical scheme has been used to define the material properties of the layers. A square shaped core has been considered for which the material properties have been defined based on the relative density concept. Large deflection theory of thin shells has been selected to develop the complete formulation of sandwich plate. The geometrically nonlinear stability analysis of sandwich annular plates has been carried out by indicating that the buckling load is dependent on particle amount, thickness of layer and core relative density.
Polycomb group (PcG) proteins are conserved chromatin regulators involved in the control of key developmental programs in eukaryotes. They collectively provide the transcriptional memory unique to each cell identity by maintaining transcriptional states of developmental genes. PcG proteins form multi-protein complexes, known as Polycomb repressive complex 1 (PRC1) and Polycomb repressive complex 2 (PRC2). PRC1 and PRC2 contribute to the stable gene silencing in part through catalyzing covalent histone modifications. Components of PRC1 and PRC2 are well conserved from plants to animals. PcG-mediated gene silencing has been extensively investigated in efforts to understand molecular mechanisms underlying developmental programs in eukaryotes. Here, we describe our current knowledge on PcG-mediated gene repression which dictates developmental programs by dynamic layers of regulatory activities, with an emphasis given to the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana.
Gradual attrition of telomere to a critical short length elicits successive cellular response of cellular senescence and crisis. Cancer cells evade this process by maintaining functional telomeres via one of two known mechanisms of telomere maintenance. The first and most frequent mechanism involves reactivation of enzyme activity of telomerase, a ribonucleoprotein complex mainly via transcriptional up-regulation of TERT, a catalytic subunit of telomerase complex. The second mechanism utilizes telomerase-independent way termed ALT (for Alternative Lengthening of Telomere), which possibly involves recombination pathways. Thus master key for cellular immortalization is supposed to possess adequate telomere reserves. Indeed, telomerase can alone induce the immortalization under culture on feeder cell layers without generally known inactivation mechanism of tumor suppressor genes. Including this phenomena, this review will focus on telomerase and telomere-associated proteins, thereby implication of these proteins for cellular immortalization processes.

Quantum-dot cellular automata(QCA) consists of nano-scale cells and demands very low power consumption so that it is one of the alternative technologies that can overcome the limits of scaling CMOS technologies. Various circuits on QCA have been researched until these days, a latch required for counter and state control has been proposed as a component of sequential logic circuits. A latch uses a feedback loop to maintain previous state. In QCA, a latch uses a square structure using 4 clocks for feedback loop. Previous latches have been proposed using many cells and clocks in coplanar. In this paper, in order to eliminate these defects, we propose a SR and D latch using multilayer structure on QCA. Proposed three dimensional loop structure is based on multilayer and consists of 3 layers. Each layer has 2 clock differences between layers in order to reduce interference. The proposed latches are analyzed and compared to previous designs.
