  • In this paper, we provide a mathematical formulation to describe the random mobility of users in cellular radio systems. With this, we can also study tile cell sojourn time (CST) distribution as well as the channel holding time (CHT) distribution. The study on user mobility enables to improve the resource management in cellular radio systems. We provide a versatile analysis tool that improves the limit of simplified analyses.

  • In order to improve the accuracy of cell selection in heterogeneous cellular systems, this paper proposes a fuzzy multiple-objective decision-based cell selection (FMDCS) strategy. Since heterogeneous cellular systems have different access technologies and multiple traffic classes, the strategy adopts cell type, data rate, coverage, transmission delay, and call arrival rate as evaluation indices, and uses different weight vectors according to the traffic classes of the mobile host. Then, a fuzzy multiple-objective decision algorithm is applied to select the optimal cell from all candidates. This paper also gives an instance analysis and simulation. The instance analysis shows FMDCS makes different selections for different traffic classes. Simulation results of the after-handoff quality-of-service (QoS) show the selected cell can provide MH optimal service.

  • A cellular automaton is well-known for self-organizing and dynamic behaviors in the field of artificial life. This paper addresses a new neuronic architecture called an evolvable cellular classifier which evolves with the genetic rules (chromosomes) in the non-uniform cellular automata. An evolvable cellular classifier is primarily based on cellular programing, but its mechanism is simpler because it utilizes only mutations for the main genetic operators and resembles the Hopfield network. Therefore, the desirable hi t-patterns could be obtained through evolutionary processes for just one individual agent. As a result, an evolvable hardware is derived which is applicable to classification of bit-string information.

  • The conversion processes from traditional job shops to cellular manufacturing systems can be viewed as an aggregation of cause-and-effect relationships among many strategic, managerial, and technical variables. Therefore, management needs to fully understand these interacting variables and possible relationships between the variables to successfully convert their plants to cellular manufacturing systems. The purpose of this study is to assist such management's needs in part. The objectives of this research are i) investigating contingency variables that may affect the conversion processes and outcomes to cellular manufacturing systems and ii) examining relationships between the variables and the conversion processes and outcomes. In this paper, particularly three categories of variables are examined: product, process routing, and process technology / facilities characteristics. Literature review and the mail survey method are used. The results are compared and synthesized with the findings of previous studies for useful discussions. Some previous arguments and propositions are empirically supported.

  • In this paper we consider the frequency assignment problem (FAP) in a cellular mobile communication system which has a maximal distance of channel interference. This special structure is observed in most cellular systems. To handle the considered FAP, we use the pattern approach which fits naturally to the problem. Based on this approach, we are able to formulate the considered FAP into a manageable optimization problem and propose a two phase heuristic algorithm for the problem. Computational experiments show that our algorithm performs much better in both solution quality and computational time than the recently developed algorithms for FAP. Since the considered FAP well reflects most cellular systems, our algorithm can be applied to many practical situations.

  • Femtocells provide high quality indoor communications with low transmit power. However, when femtocells are applied in cellular systems, a co-channel interference problem between macrocells and femtocells occurs because femtocells use the same spectrum as do the macrocells. To solve the co-channel interference problem, a previous study suggested a resource allocation scheme in LTE cellular systems using FFR. However, this conventional resource allocation scheme still has interference problems between macrocells and femtocells near the boundary of the sub-areas. In this paper, we define an optimization problem for resource allocation to femtocells and propose a femtocell resource allocation scheme to solve the optimization problem and the interference problems of the conventional scheme. The evaluation of the proposed scheme is conducted by System Level Simulation while varying the simulation environments. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme is superior to the conventional scheme and that it improves the overall performance of cellular systems.

  • In this letter, we propose an adaptive hard handoff algorithm with a dynamic hysteresis value based on the received signal strength from the serving base station, for mobile cellular communication systems. A discrete-time method is presented to evaluate handoff algorithms analytically. Performance is evaluated in terms of the average number of handoffs, the probability of link degradation, and the average handoff delay. Numerical results and simulations demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms the handoff algorithm with fixed hysteresis values and the handoff algorithm using both threshold and hysteresis.

  • In this paper, a fuzzy set based machine-cell formation algorithm for cellular manufacturing is presented. The fuzzy logic is emoloyed to express the degree of appropriateness when alternative machines are specified to process a part shape. For machine grouping, the similarity coefficient based approach is used. The algorithm produces efficient machine cells and part families which maximize the similarity values.
