Studies on molecular plasticity of Bermann glia (BG) after harmaline-induced Purkinje cell (PC) degeneration in the rat cerebellum. The intimate structural relationship between BG and PC, evidenced by the sheathing of the PC dendrites by veil-like process from the BG has been suggestive of the close functional relationship between these two cell types. However, little is known about metabolic couplings between these cells. This study designed to investigate molecular plasticity of BG in the rat cerebellum in which PCs were chemically ablated by harmaline treatment. Immunohistochemical examination reveals that harmaline induced PC degeneration causes a marked glial reaction in the cerebellum with activated BG and microglia aligned in parasagittal stripes within the vermis. In these strips, activated BG were associated with upregulaion of metallotheionein, while GLAST and was down regulated, as compared with nearby intact area where both BG are in contact with PCs. The data from this study demonstrate that BG can change their phenotypic expression when BG loose their contact with PCs. It is conceivable that activated BG may upregulate structural proteins, metallothionein expression to use for their proliferation and hypertrophy; metallothionein expression to cope with oxidative stress induced by PC degeneration and microglial activation. On the contrary, BG may down regulated expression of GLAST because sustained loss of contact with PCs would eliminate the necessity for the cellular machinery involved glutamate metabolism. In conclusion, BG might respond man to death of PCs by undergoing a change in metabolic state. It seems possible that signaling molecules released from PCs regulates the phenotype expression of BG. Also ultrastructures in the organelles of normal PC and BG are distinguished by mitochondrial appearance, and distributed vesicles at the synaptic area in the cytoplasm.
Rhizobium and related genera are soil bacteria with great metabolic plasticity. These microorganisms survive in many different environments and are capable of eliciting the formation of nitrogen-fixing nodules on legumes. The successful establishment of symbiosis is precisely regulated and requires a series of signal exchanges between the two partners. Quorum sensing (QS) is a prevalent form of population density-dependent gene regulation. Recently, increasing evidence indicates that rhizobial quorum sensing provides a pervasive regulatory network, which plays a more generalized role in the physiological activity of free-living rhizobia, as well as during symbiosis. Several rhizobia utilize multiple, overlapping quorum sensing systems to regulate diverse properties, including conjugal transfer and copy number control of plasmids, exopolysaccharide biosynthesis, rhizosphere-related functions, and cell growth. Genomic and proteomic analyses have begun to reveal the wide range of functions under quorum-sensing control.

In general, a lot of small electrode is needed for making precision injection molds, such as cell phone mold and precision connector mold, because of the limitations of NC milling process. Those small electrodes usually have very simple shapes and the actual cutting time is so short, but many NC programs and set-up process, a very complicated and time consuming Job, are needed for each electrode. This paper deals the method for increasing the productivity of machining electrodes. In this work, the process standardization of machining electrode was done and special jig fer machining small electrodes was developed. Automatic tool path optimization software was also developed to minimize tool changing time. In addition, in-line cutting tool measuring system was adopted. The productivity of machining for small electrode has been increased up to $100\%$.

MicroRNAs control gene expression by inhibiting translation or promoting degradation of their target mRNAs. Since the discovery of the first microRNAs, lin-4 and let-7, in C. elegans, hundreds of microRNAs have been identified as key regulators of cell fate determination, lifespan, and cancer in species ranging from plants to humans. However, while microRNAs have been shown to be particularly abundant in the brain, their role in the development and activity of the nervous system is still largely unknown. In this review, we describe recent advances in our understanding of microRNA function at synapses, the specialized structures required for communication between neurons and their targets. We also propose how these advances might inform the molecular model of memory.
Rather than traditional manufacturing processes, miniature manufacturing processes usually require sophisticated equipments and characteristics of the processes of high cost and of low productivity. Contrarily, miniature stamping process can be realized in a low cost high productivity with relatively inexpensive equipments. In the meso scale, mechanical properties, especially work hardening characteristics, are discovered to be statically scattered and size dependent by intensive experimental and numerical investigations, which make the stamping process hard to apply to the miniature manufacturing. In this study, dual purpose experimental device that can be used for both miniature scale tensile test and miniature scale stamping by simple change of attachment has been developed. For the tensile test, the elongation has been measured with a combined use of a CCD camera and a linear encoder in order to account for the possibility of slippage between specimen and the grip and to ensure the accuracy of the measurement, while load has been measured with a load cell. To satisfy the required material properties for stamping, optimal annealing condition has been found by examining the microstructure of annealed specimen.
The concept of the mixtures can be used not only in the composites but also in the materials with precipitates and matrix. In this investigation, the finite element method of axisymmetric unit cell models and the rule of mixtures of the Voigt and the Reuss models are used to analyze the overall mechanical response of composites with homogeneously distributed particles. The calculations have been cameo out by taking the materials as i) hardening and ii) perfect plastic materials. The Plastic properties are predicted for various volume fractions of the soft and hard particles. The computational results are compared with the results of the rule of mixtures. It is found that the plastic flow curves agree well with the Voigt model when the volume fraction of the particles is high. On the other hand, the calculated flow curves exist between the Voigt model and the Reuss model when the volume fraction of the particles is low.
This study focuses on the warm forging of a magnesium alloy impeller used for the fuel cell. The impeller has the very complicated shape with sharply twisted blade and thus is generally produced by mechanical machining or casting process. However, since these technologies give the high manufacturing cost or poor mechanical properties, the forging technology is required to make the high-quality impeller with the lower manufacturing cost. In order for production of the impeller by warm forging technology, the parametric studies using finite element analyses were carried out to find the optimal perform shape of impeller. Based on the FE simulation results, dies for impeller forging were designed and the resultant forged impeller was shown.
Emerging data demonstrate pivotal roles for brain insulin resistance and insulin deficiency as mediators of cognitive impairment and neurodegeneration, particularly Alzheimer's disease (AD). Insulin and insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) regulate neuronal survival, energy metabolism, and plasticity, which are required for learning and memory. Hence, endogenous brain-specific impairments in insulin and IGF signaling account for the majority of AD-associated abnormalities. However, a second major mechanism of cognitive impairment has been linked to obesity and Type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Human and experimental animal studies revealed that neurodegeneration associated with peripheral insulin resistance is likely effectuated via a liver-brain axis whereby toxic lipids, including ceramides, cross the blood brain barrier and cause brain insulin resistance, oxidative stress, neuro-inflammation, and cell death. In essence, there are dual mechanisms of brain insulin resistance leading to AD-type neurodegeneration: one mediated by endogenous, CNS factors; and the other, peripheral insulin resistance with excess cytotoxic ceramide production.
Post-translational modifications play major roles in the stability, function, and localization of target proteins involved in the nervous system. The ubiquitin-proteasome pathway uses small ubiquitin molecules to degrade neuronal proteins. Deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs) reverse this degradation and thereby control neuronal cell fate, synaptic plasticity, axonal growth, and proper function of the nervous system. Moreover, mutations or downregulation of certain DUBs have been found in several neurodegenerative diseases, as well as gliomas and neuroblastomas. Based on emerging findings, DUBs represent an important target for therapeutic intervention in various neurological disorders. Here, we summarize advances in our understanding of the roles of DUBs related to neurobiology.
