A Pt-layer was deposited on the anode side of a Nafion membrane via a sputtering method in order to reduce methanol crossover in a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). The methanol permeation and the proton conductivity through the modified membranes were investigated. The performances of the direct methanol fuel cell were also tested using single cells with a Nafion membrane and the modified membranes. The Pt-layers on the membrane blocked both methanol crossover and proton transport through the membranes. Methanol permeability and proton conductivity decreased with an increase of the platinum layer thickness. At methanol concentration of 2 M, the DMFC employing the modified membrane with a platinum layer of 66 nm-thickness showed similar performance to that of a DMFC with a bare Nafion membrane in spite of the lower proton conductivity of the former. The maximum power density of the cell using the modified membrane with a platinum layer of 66 nm-thickness increased slightly while that of the cell with the bare membrane decreased abruptly when a methanol solution of 6M was supplied.
Scandium-doped zirconium, ScSZ-based electrolyte, provides higher oxygen conductivity than YSZ and nano-based electrolyte materials are ideal for fabricating thin film electrolyte membrane of SOFC unit cell. Moreover, it may be applied to anode and cathode as well as electrolyte as ionic conductor. In this report, nano-based ScSZ-based electrolyte powder was prepared by co-precipitation synthesis. The particle size, surface area and morphology of the powder were observed by SEM and BET. Thin film electrolyte of under $10{\mu}m$ was fabricated by tape casting and co-firing using the synthesized ScSZ-based powders, and ionic conductivity and gas permeability of electrolyte film were evaluated. Finally, the SOFC unit cell was fabricated using the anode-supported electrolyte prepared by a tape casting method and co-sintering. Electrochemical evaluations of the SOFC unit cell, including measurements such as power density and impedance, were performed and analyzed.

In this paper, we present to evaluate physiological activity of Robinia pseudo-acacia leaf and its skin penetration using liposome and cell penetrating peptide. After extraction with Robinia pseudo-acacia leaf using the distilled water and supercritical, various physiological activities were examined. In antioxidants experiments, the total concentration of polyphenol compounds was determined to be 56.88 mg/g in hydrothermal extract, 45.07 mg/g in supercritical extract. The DPPH radical scavenging ability at 1,000 ㎍/mL was 33.97% in supercritical extract. The scavenging effect on SOD experiment at 500 ㎍/mL was 76.41% in supercritical extract. In the antimicrobial experiments, the hydrothermal extract had no effect, but supercritical extract represented maximum clear zone of 14.00 mm in Staphylococcus aureus strain. Liposome containing the RSE (Robinia pseudo-acacia leaf supercritical extract) reduced particle size and stabilized zeta potential. In the epidermal permeability experiment, it was confirmed that the permeation of liposome containing the RSE and cell penetrating peptides was remarkable.
Cytolysin produced by Vibrio vulnificus has been incriminated as one of the important virulence determinants in V. vulnificus infection. Ion selectivity of cytolysin-induced pores was examined in a CPAE cell, a cell line of pulmonary endothelial cell, using inside-out patch clamp techniques. In symmetrical NaCl concentration (140 mM), intracellular or extracellular application of cytolysin formed ion-permeable pores with a single channel conductance of $37.5{\pm}4.0$ pS. The pore currents were consistently maintained after washout of cytolysin. Replacement of $Na^+$ in bath solution with monovalent ions $(K^+,\;Cs^+\;or\;TEA^+)$ or with divalent ions $(Mg^{2+},\;Ca^{2+})$ did not affect the pore currents. When the NaCl concentration in bath solution was lowered from 140 to 60 and 20 mM, the reversal potential shifted from 0 to -11.8 and -28.2 mV, respectively. The relative permeability of the cytolysin pores to anions measured at $-40\;mV\;was\;Cl^-\;=\;NO_2^-\;{\geq}\;Br^-\;=\;I^-\;> \;SCN^-\;>\;acetate^-\;>\;isethionate^-\;>\;ascorbic acid^-\;>\;EDTA^{2-},$ in descending order. The cytolysin-induced pore current was blocked by $CI^-$ channel blockers or nucleotides. These results indicate that V. vulnificus cytolysin forms anion-selective pores in CPAE cells.
The acceleration of consolidation by stone columns was mostly analysed within the framework of a basic unit cell model (i.e. a cylindrical soil body around a column). A method of converting the axisymmetric unit cell into the equivalent plane-strain model would be required for two-dimensional numerical modelling of multi-column field applications. This paper proposes two practical simplified conversion methods to obtain the equivalent plane-strain model of the unit cell, and investigates their applicability to multi-column reinforced ground. In the first conversion method, the soil permeability is matched according to an analytical equation, whereas in the second method, the column width is matched based on the equivalence of column area. The validity of these methods is tested by comparison with the numerical results of unit-cell simulations and with the field data from an embankment case history. The results show that for the case of linear-elastic material modelling, both methods produce reasonably accurate long-term consolidation settlements, whereas for the case of elasto-plastic material modelling, the second method is preferable as the first one gives erroneously lower long-term settlements, where plastic yielding of stone column are ignored.
The Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL) of fuel cell, are required to provide both delivery of reactant gases to the catalyst layer and removal of water in either vapor or liquid form in typical PEMFCs. In this study, the fabrication of GDL containing Micro Porous Layer (MPL) made of the slurry of PVDF mixed with carbon black is investigated in detail. Physical properties of GDL containing MPL, such as electrical resistance, gas permeability and microstructure were examined, and the performance of the cell using developed GDL with MPL was evaluated. The results show that MPL with PVDF binder demonstrated uniformly distributed microstructure without large cracks and pores, which resulted in better electrical conductivity. The fuel cell performance test demonstrates that the developed GDL with MPL has a great potential due to enhanced mass transport property due to its porous structure and small pore size.
Benzyl alcohol is known to have dual effect on the red blood cell shape change. At low concentration up to 50 mM benzyl alcohol transformed the shape from discocyte to stomatocyte by preferent binding to the inner hemileaflet, however, at higher concentratransformed the shape from discocyte to stomatocyte by preferential binding to the inner monolayer, however, at higher concentration above 50 mM benzyl alcohol transformed to echinocyte by affecting both monolayers. These results suggest that the effect of benzyl alcohol on the red blood cell shape and $Ca^{++}$ transport across cardiac cell membranes to assess the effects of the drug on the structures and functions of the biological cell membranes. The results are as follows: 1) Benzyl alcohol up to 40 mM caused progressive stomatocytic shap change of the red blood cell but above 50 mM benzyl alcohol caused echinocytic shape change. 2) Benzyl alcohol up to 40 mM inhibited both osmotic hemolysis and osmotic volume change of the red blood cell in hypotonic and hypertonic NaCl solutions, respectively. 3) Benzyl alcohol inhibited both Bowditch Staircase and Wood-worth Staircase phenomena at rat left auricle. 4) Benzyl alcohol at concentration of 5 mM increased $Ca^{++}-ATPase$ activity of red blood cell ghosts slightly but above S mM benzyl alcohol inhibited the $Ca^{++}-ATPase$ activity. 5) Benzyl alcohol at concentrations of 5 mM and 10 mM increased $Ca^{++}-ATPase$ activity slightly at rat gastrocnemius muscle S.R. but above 10 mM benzyl alcohol inhibited the $Ca^{++}-ATPase$ activity. Above results indicate that benzyl alcohol inhibit water permeability and $Ca^{++}$ transport across cell membranes in part via effects on the fluidity and transition temperatures of the bulk lipid by preferential intercalation into cytoplasmic monolayer and in part via other effect on the conformational change of active sites of the $Ca^{++}-ATPase$ molecule extended in cytoplasmic face.
The electrolyte in the solid oxide fuel cell must be dense enough to avoid gas leakage and thin enough to reduce the ohmic resistance. In order to manufacture the thin and dense electrolyte layer, 8 mol% $Y_2O_3$ stabilized-$ZrO_2$ (8YSZ) electrolyte layers were coated on the porous tubular substrate by the novel vacuum slurry dip-coating process. The effects of the slurry concentration, presintering temperature, and vacuum pressure on the thickness and the gas permeability of the coated electrolyte layers have been examined in the vacuum slurry coating process. The vacuum-coated electrolyte layers showed very low gas permeabilities and had thin thicknesses. The single cell with the vacuum-coated electrolyte layer indicated a good performance of $495\;mW/cm^2$, 0.7 V at $700^{\circ}C$. The experimental results show that the vacuum dip-coating process is an effective method to fabricate dense thin film on the porous tubular substrate.
