Microsatellites, short tandem repeats, are useful markers for genetic analysis because of their high frequency of occurrence over the genome, high information content due to variable repeat lengths, and ease of typing. To establish a panel of microsatellite markers useful for genetic studies of the Korean population, the allele frequencies and heterozygosities of 207 microsatellite markers in 119 unrelated Korean, Indian and Pakistani individuals were compared. The average heterozygosity of the Korean population was 0.71, similar to that of the Indian and Pakistani populations. More than 80% of the markers showed heterozygosity of over 0.6 and were valuable as genetic markers for genome-wide screening for disease susceptibility loci in these populations. To identify the allelic distributions of the multilocus genetic data from these microsatellite markers, the population structures were assessed by clustering. These markers supported, with the most probability, three clustering groups corresponding to the three geographical populations. When we assumed only two hypothetical clusters (K), the Korean population was separate from the others, suggesting a relatively deep divergence of the Korean population. The present 207 microsatellite markers appear to reflect the historical and geographical origins of the different populations as well as displaying a similar degree of variation to that seen in previously published genetic data. Thus, these markers will be useful as a reference for human genetic studies on Asians.

We report a unique case of synchronous double primary gastric cancer consisting of adenocarcinoma components with micropapillary features and composite glandular-endocrine cell carcinoma components. The patient was a 53-year-old man presenting with a 6-month history of epigastric pain and diarrhea. A subtotal gastrectomy was performed. Histologically, one tumor was composed of micropapillary carcinoma components (50%) with tight clusters of micropapillary aggregates lying in the empty spaces, admixed with moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma components. MUC-1 was expressed at the stromal edge of the micropapillary component. The other tumor was composed of atypical carcinoid-like neuroendocrine carcinoma (50%), adenocarcinoid (30%), and adenocarcinoma components (20%). The neuroendocrine components were positive for CD56, synaptophysin, chromogranin, and creatine kinase. The adenocarcinoid components were positive for both carcinoembryonic antigen and neuroendocrine markers (amphicrine differentiation). This case is unique, due to the peculiar histologic micropapillary pattern and the histologic spectrum of adenocarcinoma adenocarcinoid-neuroendocrine carcinoma of the synchronous composite tumor.

In this study, we investigated gene expression patterns induced by Ailanthus altissima extract and compared it with Gleevec, a well-known anti-leukemia drug, in K562 chromic leukemia cells. Ailanthus altissima extract(100 ug/ml) and Gleevec(50 ug/ml) were treated to cells for 1h, 2h, 4h, and 16h and total RNA was extracted. Gene expressions were evaluated using cDMA microarray, in which 24,000 genes were spotted. Hierarchical clustering analysis showed that expression of genes included in two clusters were increased or decreased time dependently by both Ailanthus altissima extract and Gleevec. Genes included in another cluster were induced by Ailanthus altissima extract but not by Gleevec. In biological process analysis, expression of genes involved in apoptosis, growth arrest and DNA-damage were increased, but genes stimulating cell cycle were decreased. This study provides comprehensive comparison of the patterns of gene expression changes induced by Ailanthus altissima extract and Gleevec in K-562 leukemia cells.

To understand the response of cancer cells to anticancer drugs at the gene expression level, we examined the gene expression changes in response to five anticancer drugs, 5-fluorouracil, cytarabine, cisplatin, paclitaxel, and cytochalasin D in NCI-H460 human lung cancer cells. Of the five drugs, 5-fluorouracil had the most distinctive gene expression signature. By clustering genes whose expression changed significantly, we identified three clusters with unique gene expression patterns. The first cluster reflected the up-regulation of gene expression by cisplatin, and included genes involved in cell death and DNA repair. The second cluster pointed to a general reduction of gene expression by most of the anticancer drugs tested. A number of genes in this cluster are involved in signal transduction that is important for communication between cells and reception of extracellular signals. The last cluster represented reduced gene expression in response to 5-fluorouracil, the genes involved being implicated in DNA metabolism, the cell cycle, and RNA processing. Since the gene expression signature of 5-fluorouracil was unique, we investigated it in more detail. Significance analysis of microarray data (SAM) identified 808 genes whose expression was significantly altered by 5-fluorouracil. Among the up-regulated genes, those affecting apoptosis were the most noteworthy. The down-regulated genes were mainly associated with transcription-and translation-related processes which are known targets of 5-fluorouracil. These results suggest that the gene expression signature of an anticancer drug is closely related to its physiological action and the response of caner cells.

Objective : To identify key cytologic features for diagnosis of adenocarcinoma and morphologic differentiation from reactive/reparative respiratory epithelium. Study Design : The cytomorphologic features of 145 pulmonary cytology specimens (sputum and bronchial washing), which included 117 histologically proven adenocarcinomas and 28 non-neoplastic lesions, cytologically diagnosed as atypia and suspicious for malignancy (adenocarcinoma) were reviewed retrospectively. We analyzed 11 morphologic criteria in pulmonary cytologic specimens. Results: Over 110 of 117 cases of adenocarcinomas revealed nuclear membrane irregularities, non-cohesive cells, single atypical cells, moderate to markedly enlarged nuclei and an increased nuclear/cytoplasmic (N/C) ratio. Chromatin clearing, chromatin heterogeneity and hyperchromasia were seen in 102, 99 and 97 cases, respectively. All 28 cases involving non-neoplastic lesions revealed hyperplastic reactive pneumocytes, hyperplastic reactive bronchial epithelium, or degenerating macrophages. The non-neoplastic lesions revealed a small number of atypical cell clusters and paucity or absence of atypical single cells. Conclusion : The most important morphologic features for diagnosis of adenocarcinoma are nuclear membrane irregularities, non-cohesive cells, single atypical cell, moderate to markedly enlarged nuclei and increased N/C ratio. Chromatin clearing, chromatin heterogeneity and hyperchromasia were also helpful features, while pleomorphism and prominent nucleoli were less valuable.

Intracellular synthesis of silver/silver chloride nanoparticles (Ag/AgCl-NPs) using Meyerozyma guilliermondii KX008616 is reported under aerobic and anaerobic conditions for the first time. The biogenic synthesis of Ag-NP types has been proposed as an easy and cost-effective alternative for various biomedical applications. The interaction of nanoparticles with ethanol production was mentioned. The purified biogenic Ag/AgCl-nanoparticles were characterized by different spectroscopic and microscopic approaches. The purified nanoparticles exhibited a surface plasmon resonance band at 419 and 415 nm, confirming the formation of Ag/AgCl-NPs under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, respectively. The planes of the cubic crystalline phase of the Ag/AgCl-NPs were confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Fourier-transform infrared spectra showed the interactions between the yeast cell constituents and silver ions to form the biogenic Ag/AgCl-NPs. The intracellular Ag/AgCl-NPs synthesized under aerobic condition were homogenous and spherical in shape, with an approximate particle size of 2.5-30nm as denoted by the transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The reaction mixture was optimized by varying reaction parameters, including temperature and pH. Analysis of ultrathin sections of yeast cells by TEM indicated that the biogenic nanoparticles were formed as clusters, known as nanoaggregates, in the cytoplasm or in the inner and outer regions of the cell wall. The study recommends using the biomass of yeast that is used in industrial or fermentation purposes to produce Ag/AgCl-NPs as associated by-products to maximize benefit and to reduce the production cost.

The arrangement of encapsulated Ar atoms in the molecular-dimensioned cavities of fully dehydrated zeolite A of unit-cell composition $Cs_3Na_8HSi_{12}Al_{12}O_{48}$ ($Cs_3$-A) has been studied crystallographically to probe the confinement effect of guest species in microporous environment. Atoms of Ar were encapsulated in the cavities of $Cs_3$-A by treatment with 410 atm of Ar at $400^{\circ}C$ for two days, followed by cooling at room temperature. The crystal structure of $Cs_3Na_8H$-A(4Ar) ($P_e$ = 410 atm, $a=12.245(2){\AA}$, $R_1=0.0543$, and $R_2=0.0552$) has been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction technique in the cubic space group $Pm\bar{3}m$ at 21 (1) $^{\circ}C$ and 1 atm. Encapsulated Ar atoms are distributed in three crystallographic distinct positions: 1.5 Ar atoms per unit cell opposite 6-rings, 1.5 opposite four-rings in the large cavity, and finally 1.0 in the sodalite-unit. The possible structures of argon clusters, such as $Ar_2$, $Ar_3$, and $Ar_4$, are proposed.
The crystal structure of partially $Ag^+$-exchanged zeolite A, $Ag_{3.2}Na_{8.8}$-A, vacuum dehydrated at $360^{\circ}C$ and then exposed to 0.1 torr of cesium vapor for 12 hours at $250^{\circ}C$ has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques in the cubic space group Pm3m (a = 12.262(2)${\AA})\;at\;21(1)^{\circ}C$. The structure was refined to the final error indexes $R_1=0.068\;and\;R_2=0.072$ by using 338 reflections for which $I_o\;>\;3{\sigma}(I_o)$ and the composition of unit cell is $Ag_{3.2}Cs_{8.8}-A.\;3\;Cs^+$ ions lie on the centers of the 8-rings at sites of D4h symmetry. Two crystallographycally different 6-ring $Cs^+$ ions were found: 1.5 $Cs^+$ ions at Cs(2) are located inside of sodalite cavity and 4.3 $Cs^+$ ions at Cs(3) are located in the large cavity. The fractional occupancies observed at Cs(2) and Cs(3) indicate that the existence of at least three types of unit cells with regard to the 6-ring $Cs^+$ ions. For example, 50% of unit cells may have two $Cs^+$ ions at Cs(2) and 4 $Cs^+$ ions at Cs(3). 30% of unit cells may have one Cs+ ion at Cs(2) and 5 $Cs^+$ ions at Cs(3). The remaining 20% would have one $Cs^+$ ion at Cs(2) and 4 $Cs^+$ ions at Cs(3). On threefold axes of the unit cell two non-equivalent Ag atom positions are found in the large cavity, each containing 0.64 and 1.92 Ag atoms, respectively. A crystallographic analysis may be interpreted to indicate that 0.64 $(Ag_5)^+$ clusters are present in each large cavity. This cluster may be viewed as a tetrasilver molecule $(Ag_4)^0$(bond length, 2.84${\AA}$) stabilized by the coordination of one $Ag^+$ ion.

The distribution and relative frequency of somatostatin-immunoreactive cells in the pancreas were studied during developmental stages (fetus, neonate, 1-month-old, 6-month-old and adult) of the Korean native goat by immunohistochemical methods. Somatostatin-immunoreactive cells were detected in the exocrine of all ages, in the endocrine portions (pancreatic islets) from the neonate, and in the pancreatic duct of the 1-month-old. The relative frequencies of these cells in the pancreatic islets increased with age. However, there were no age-related changes in the relative frequencies of somatostatin-immunoreactive cells in the exocrine and pancreatic duct. Generally, they were distributed in the interacinar spaces, the epithelium of the pancreatic duct, or dispersed in the peripheral zone of the pancreatic islets in all ages. However, clusters consisting of 3-4 cells were also found in the subepithelial connective tissues from the 1-month-old. In addition, the distributions in the endocrine portions of the adult were divided into two patterns: 1) they are dispersed in the marginal regions with moderate or low frequencies, or 2) in the inner zone with high frequencies.

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) and Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) are expected to be the major techniques that lead to the next generation wireless communication. NOMA provides a high spectrum efficiency by sharing of spatial resources among users in the same frequency band. Meanwhile, millimeter-wave gives a huge underutilized bandwidth at extremely high frequency band (EHF) which covers 30GHz to 300GHz. These techniques have been proven in several recent literatures to achieve high data rates. The combination of NOMA and millimeter-wave techniques further improves average sum capacities, as well as reduces the interference compared to conventional wireless communication systems. In this paper, we focus on hybrid NOMA system working in millimeter-wave frequency. We propose a clustering algorithm used for a hybrid NOMA scheme to optimize the usage of wireless resources. The proposed clustering algorithm adds several conditions in grouping users and defining clusters to increase the probability of the successful superposition decoding process. The performance of the proposed clustering algorithm is investigated in hybrid NOMA system and compared with the conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) scheme.
