A controlled column study using elution development and miscible displacement was conducted to assess heavy metal transport characteristics in sludge-untreated soil ("Control"), soil treated with an equivalent of sludge 50 and 100 dry ton $ha^{-1}$ ("Soil-Sludge mixtures"), and sewage sludge ("Sludge"). The elution curves (ECs) and the breakthrough curves (BTCs) for Cd, Cu and Zn in sludge 50 and 100 dry ton $ha^{-1}$ treated soils are not different from the sludge-untreated soil, The ECs for Cd, Cu and Zn in soil column which received a pulse of 10 mg of each Cd, Cu and Zn were similar to those of Cd, Cu and Zn in soil column which had no Cd, Cu and Zn added, but were very different with the ECs for Cd, Cu and Zn in soil column which received a pulse of Cd, Cu and Zn containing 50 mg of each metal. On the other hand, the BTCs for Cd, Cu and Zn in soil columns that were eluted with 500 and $1000mg\;L^{-1}$ of mixed solution of Cd, Cu and Zn were similar to each other, but were distinctly different with the BTCs for Cd, Cu and Zn in soil column that was eluted with $100mg\;L^{-1}$ mixed solution of Cd, Cu and Zn. Sewage sludge applied at rates of 50 and 100 dry ton $ha^{-1}$ did not affect the transport characteristics of this calcareous soil. The apparent mobility for this sludge treated soil and sludge is: Cd >Zn>Cu. The transport characteristics of Cd and Zn are similar to each other, but are different from those of Cu.

Four crop plants, such as green onion(Allium ascalonicum L.), radish(Raphanus sativus L.), potato(Solanum tubersum L.) and chinese cabbage(Brassica pekinensis Rupr), were grown in greenhouses to determine the accumulations of Cd and Zn absorbed by the plants grown on soils treated with municipal sewage sludge of different levels of 0, 22.5, 45.0 and 90.0 ton $ha^{-1}$ as soil dry weight. The result was analyzed to be comparable to the heavy metal content in the plant tissues among the crop species and the statistical characteristics were investigated to determin a possible relationship between causes of increased contents of Cd and Zn in plants and in soils. The results were as follows : 1. The Cd and Zn content in experimental crop plants increased with increase in quantity of treatment sludge. 2. The Cd and Zn content in roots of all experimental plants increased with sludge treatment amount in soil, in the following order : green onion>potato>chinese cabbage>radish. 3. The Cd content in leaves of crop plants were high in this order : green onion>radish>potato>chinese cabbage, and the Zn content in leaves of crop plants was high in this order. : potato>radish>chinese cabbage>green onion. 4. Concentrations of Cd in potato tubers, radish roots and chinese cabbage leaves ranged from 0.03 to 0.12 ppm. 5. Concentrations of Cd and Zn in plant tissues grown in sludge treated soil of 90.0 ton $ha^{-1}$ were 1.2 to 10 times and 0.4 to 2.3 times higher as compared with those absorbed from sludge-free soil, respectively. 6. The accumulation rates of Cd and Zn in sludge-treated plant tissue were almost constant except for green onion roots.
The distributions of Cd, Cu, and Zn concentration in soil treated with one (1988) or two (1988 and 1993) applications of sewage sludge at rates of 0, 25, 50, and $100Mg\;ha^{-1}$ (dry weight basis) were determined to assess the accumulation and mobility of the heavy metals. The heavy metals accumulated almost entirely in 0 to 15 cm soil depths. Small amounts of the metals moved out of the tillage zone (0-15 cm depth) into the subsoil, but even at the high rate of sewage sludge, little movement of heavy metals occurred below 100 cm depth. The water-extractable Cd, Cu, and Zn concentrations were very low regardless of the rate of sewage sludge application. Availability of metals as determined by DTPA extraction showed the percentage of DTPA-extractable/total concentration increased with sewage sludge application. In the 0-15 cm depth of sewage sludge treated soil, the percentage of DTPA-extractable/total concentration was higher than 46% for Cd, but the value was less than 27% and 17% for Cu and Zn, respectively. The Cd, Cu, and Zn added to this calcareous clay soil by sewage sludge application were not very mobile, and the amount of plant available form was very small.

In this study, the sewage sludge dryer is installed before and after dehydration of the sludge and aqueous phase composition, the heavy metal content, and measurement and analysis were investigated. The removal efficiency of water content of sewage sludge was about 95.7% in the sewage sludge dryer. The removal efficiency of water content for primary dryer was designed for 35% of primary drying, secondary drying to remove the water content to 10%, but as the measurement revealed that 20.8% of primary drying, the second dryer 3.3% a better effect to the actual operation respectively. Before the installation of the sewage sludge dryer, the content of heavy metal was as follows, Cu:352~614 ppm, Hg: 1.3~1.44ppm, Cd : 1.1~1.86ppm, Pb : 17.25~ 28.93 ppm, As : 1ppm. And after the installation of the sewage sludge dryer, the content of heavy metal changed to as follows, Cu : 340~350 ppm, Hg : 0 ppm, Cd : 0~0.021 ppm, Pb : 0 ppm, As : 0~0.043 ppm which is Also below the legal limits. Also, the sewage sludge dryer produce 1/4 of the sewage sludge into dried sludge.
To investigate the adsorption-desorption reaction of Cd by sewage sludge, the adsorption of Cd from $Cd(NO_3)_2$ solutions of concentrations ranging from 5 to $50{\mu}g\;Cd\;mL^{-1}$ by sewage sludge was examined for reaction periods up to 48 hours. The amount of Cd adsorbed as a function of time was measured. The adsorption between Cd in solution and the solid phase could be described by two stages. The initial adsorption of Cd was very rapid, that is, approximately 95% of the added Cd was removed from solution within the first 30 minutes. Further, the greater the concentration of Cd added, the greater was the amount of Cd adsorbed. After the rapid initial decrease of Cd, a slower decline in the Cd concentration resulted which followed first order reversible kinetics. The equilibrium concentrations for the reactions, as well as the time period for the equilibrium reactions were dependent on the initial Cd concentrations. If equilibrium is reached, the amount of Cd remaining in solution is greater when the amount adsorbed is higher, although the percentage of Cd in solution is constant relative to the initial concentration of Cd. Some of the adsorbed Cd was released back to solution since the concentration of Cd after 48 hours was higher than the equilibrium concentration of Cd. However, despite the increased amount of Cd measured, the overall net reaction was a significant adsorption of Cd from solution by sewage sludge.
This study was aimed to observe the effects of municipal sewage sludge as nutrients on the growth of Lettuce. The effects of heavy metal components of the sludge were also observed. Municipal sewage sludge from Taejon City were treated to the soil of PaiChai University Farm in order to make gradient of nitrogen concentration in soil among 6 experimental groups. Results are as follows ;The longest leaves and roots were produced in control pot, in which urea was supplied as nitrogen source to the soil. Any other sludge-treated groups produced shorter leaves and roots than control group, but the more sewage sludge treated the longer leaves and heavier vegetables were observed. No differences were observed among from 6 experimental groups in the view of N, K, Ca and Mg contents. But P contents in leaves from 6 groups varied. Zn content of Lettuce when was 65.8 mg/kg when it grew with sludge 200%. The groups treated with sludge 200% produced the vegetables of highest Zn contents. Accumulation of Zn, Mn and Cd was more heavier in Lettuce than in Altari radish. Accumulation of Zn, Mn, Cu and Cd in lettuce was not heavier than natural contents of those in market vegetables.
This study was initiated to elucidate the relation between the toxicity of $Cr^{6+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, and $Cd^{2+}$ and sludge age (Solids retention time, SRT). The effect of SRT on the toxicity of $Cr^{6+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, and $Cd^{2+}$ in activated sludge system was investigated with INT-dehydrogenase assay. Experimental results showed that the inhibitory effects of $Cr^{6+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, and $Cd^{2+}$ were reduced as the sludge age increased from SRT 5 d to SRT 25 d. It is noteworthy that the experimental results enabled to determine the relative toxicity of the tested metals depending on the sludge age. At the SRT of 5 and 9 days, the order of toxicity of the three metals to the activated sludge was $Cr^{6+}$ > $Zn^{2+}$ > $Cd^{2+}$ (the $IC_{50}$ value of $Cr^{6+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, and $Cd^{2+}$ was 16.15, 25.90, and 32.49 mg/L, respectively) and $Zn^{2+}$ > $Cr^{6+}$ > $Cd^{2+}$ (the $IC_{50}$ value of $Cr^{6+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, and $Cd^{2+}$ was 39.12, 27.93, and 42.31 mg/L, respectively), respectively. However, the toxicity of three metals was almost same at the SRT of 14 and 25 days (the range of $IC_{50}$ in SRT 14 and 25 days was from 49.80 mg/ L to 53.44 mg/L among three heavy metals). This results would be explained by that the quantity of biopolymer formed in short SRT was small, whereas that in long SRT was large. Consequently, it is recommended that sludge age be maintained at long SRT in order to avoid the toxicity inhibition of heavy metals such as $Cr^{6+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, and $Cd^{2+}$.

In this study, water treatment sludge carbonized with $400^{\circ}C$ was tested as an adsorbent for the removal of Pb and Cd in water. The carbonized sludge was characterized by thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), and surface area analysis. Carbonized sludge exhibited much higher specific surface area and total pore volume than water treatment sludge itself. In batch-type adsorption process, carbonized sludge represented better adsorption performance for Pb than Cd, achieving 90~98% at the concentrations conducted in the experiments. Equilibrium data of adsorption were analyzed using the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models. It was seen that both Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms have correlation coefficient $R^2$ value larger than 0.95. The results of studies indicated that carbonized water treatment sludge by heat treatment could be used as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of Pb and Cd from water.
This study was performed to investigate the possible uses of waste sludge for the removal of heavy metal ions. The adsorption experiments were conducted with wastes such as sewage treatment sludge, water treatment sludge and oyster shell to evaluate their sorption characteristics. Heavy metals selected were cadmium, copper and lead. in the sorption experiments on the sewage treatment sludge, water treatment sludge, oyster shell and soil, sorption occurred in the beginning and it reached equilibrium after 40 minutes on the oyster shell and 4 hour on the sewage treatment sludge and water treatment sludge. Results of Freundlich isotherms indicated that sewage treatment sludge could be properly used as an adsorbent for heavy metals and sorption strength of heavy metals was in the order of Pb > Cu > Cd. In the influence of pH on the adsorbents, sorption rate was more than 80% in pH 4 and most of heavy metals were adsorbed in pH 9. Adsorption rate of Cd decreased with decreasing pH and then adsorption rate of Cu was lower in soil.
Municipal sewage sludge produced at the Daegu Dalseo River Municipal Sewage Treatment Station was applied to radish(cv. Altari) to develop as an organic fertilizer. The sludge contained 53.59% of organic matter, 2.89% of nitrogen, and 3.5% of phosphate, so it seems to be enough to use as an organic fertilizer. Although the Cd and Pb contents of the sludge were lower than the official standard levels for the by-product fertilizer, it seems to be needed more researches due to the accumulation of the heavy metals both in soil and plants. Application of the sludge increased soil pH, organic matter, total nitrogen, available phosphate, exchangeable Ca and Mg contents, and CEC. Also application of the sludge tended to increase Cd and Pb contents slightly in soil. Application of the sludge increased N, $P_2O_5$, Cd, and Pb contents in plant and among the heavy metals Cd accumulated more than Pb. Yield of radish increased up to 1.000kg/10a of sludge in addition to the standard chemical fertilization or 3,000kg/10a of the sludge only.
