Effects of Cadmium on Embryo Hatchability, Larval Development and Survival of the Olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus

  • The cadmium (Cd) toxicological effects on the fertilized eggs, embryos and larvae were investigated in olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus water-borne exposed to Cd. The survival rate and hatching success of the embryos significantly diminished in treated groups in dependence of the Cd concentration. Significant differences were found at ${\geq}30{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ exposed groups compared to the control group. A significant increase of malformation of the embryo was observed at ${\geq}20{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ exposed groups. They usually include such symptoms as clouded yolk-sac abnormality, fin erosion and spinal curvature. A significant reduction in the survival rate of the larvae was observed in ${\geq}20{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ exposed groups with accompanied by the disorder. Notably, in larvae, a concentration as low as $10{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ exposed groups caused significant elevated abnormalities that is incidences of spinal cord deformation, abnormal eyes, deformation of the head region and severe developmental delay.

  • In this study, we determined the effect of different concentrations of Cd on the growth of Pleurotus ostreatus mycelia, which was confirmed using PDA, PDB, and a column test. The efficacy of treatment was evaluated using Cd at two concentrations, 10 ppm and 100 ppm. The extent of mycelial growth on PDA and PDB was similar to that observed in the untreated groups and those treated with 10 ppm Cd. However, it was found that the mycelial growth was suppressed in a system treated with Cd at concentrations of 100 ppm. Moreover, the extent of mycelial growth observed upon conducting a column test was similar to that obtained using PDA and PDB. When the composition of free amino acids in PDB was determined, their levels in the group treated with 100 ppm Cd were found to be similar to those of the control. However, the amounts of 15 amino acids in the group treated with 10 ppm of Cd had increased compared to those detected in the control.

Evaluation of Raw and Calcined Eggshell for Removal of Cd2+ from Aqueous Solution

  • The potential use of egg shell and calcined egg shell as adsorbent was evaluated and compared to remove Cd2+ from aqueous solution. The samples were characterized using Thermogravimetry and Differential Thermal Analysis (TG/DTA), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), X-ray Diffractometer (XRD), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometer (EDX) and BET Surface Analyzer. The batch-type adsorption experiment was conducted by varying diverse variables such as contact time, pH, initial Cd2+ concentrations and adsorbent dosage. The results showed that, under the initial Cd2+ concentrations ranged from 25 to 200 mg g-1, the removal efficiencies of Cd2+ by egg shell powder (ESP) were decreased steadily from 96.72% to 22.89% with increase in the initial Cd2+ concentration at 2.5 g of dosage and 8 h of contact time. However, on the contrary to this, calcined egg shell powder (CESP) showed removal efficiencies above 99% regardless of initial Cd2+ concentration. The difference in the adsorption behavior of Cd2+ may be explained due to the different pH values of ESP and CESP in solution. Cd2+ seems to be efficiently removed from aqueous solution by using the CESP with a basicity nature of around pH 12. It was also observed that an optimum dosage of ESP and CESP for nearly complete removal of Cd2+ from aqueous solution is approximately 5.0 g and 1.0 g, respectively. Consequently, Cd2+ is more favorably adsorbed on CESP than ESP in the studied conditions. Adsorption data were applied by the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetics models and Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models, respectively. With regard to adsorption kinetics tests, the pseudo-second-order kinetics was more suitable for ESP and CESP. The adsorption pattern of Cd2+ by ESP was better fitted to Langmuir isotherm model. However, by contrast with ESP, CESP was described by Freundlich isotherm model well.

  • The ORD and CD for hyoscine-N-butylbromide present curves of negative Cotton effect in 190-250nm region. The values of .alpha./sub 232/ .alpha./sub 208/, vertical bar .alpha./sub 232/ vertical bar + vertical bar .alpha./sub 208/ and .theta./sub 221.5/ have linearities in the range of lower concentration (hyoscine-N-butylbromide 0.01-0.1w/v%). It is possible to determine the optical purity of hyoseine-N-butylbromide by using these linearities. This experiment is extremely simple and less time-consuming than other methods for estimating optical purity.

  • Boron doped CdS films were prepared by CBD(Chemical Bath Deposition) method using boric acid ($B_3HO_3$) as donor dopant source, and their properties were investigated. As-grown CdS films were highly adherent and specularly reflective. Boron doped CdS film which was fabricated under the condition of 0.01 $B_3HO_3/Cd(Ac)_2$ mole ratio, exhibited the lowest resistivity of $2{\Omega}cm$ and the highest optical bandgap of 2.41eV. Also, CdS/CdTe solar cells were fabricated with various doping concentration of CdS films. Using optimized CdS film as the window layer of CdS/CdTe solar cell, the characteristics of the cell were improved. ( $V_{oc}$=610mV, $J_{sc}$=37.5mA/cm, FF=0.4, $\eta$=9.1% )

Starch-iodine Complex의 변색반응을 이용한 ${\alpha}-Cyclodextrin$의 정량 (Colorimetric Determination of ${\alpha}-Cyclodextrin$ by Using the Decoloration of Starch-iodine Complex)

  • ${\alpha}-Cyclodextrin(CD)$이 starch-iodine 복합체를 변색시킬 수 있다는 성질을 이용하여 ${\alpha}CD$의 새로운 비색정량법을 확립하였다. 이 새로운 ${\alpha}CD$의 정량법은 다음과 같다. ${\alpha}CD$의 표준용액을 2 mg/ml까지 농도별로 준비하였다. 그리고 동량으로 혼합된 starch-iodine 복합체 용액 1ml에 ${\alpha}CD$ 표준용액 $200\;{\mu}l$와 증류수 3 ml를 함께 가하고, 570 nm에서 흡광도를 측정하였다. 이 방법으로 ${\alpha}CD$의 농도범위는 $0{\sim}2\;mg/ml$까지 측정할 수 있었고, 570 nm에서의 흡광도도 가장 좋은 직선성을 나타내었다. 한편, ${\beta}CD$와 glucose는 ${\alpha}CD$ 정량을 위한 본 방법에 아무런 방해효과가 없었다.

폐광산지역 토양 중금속원소들에 대한 통계학적 환경오염 특성평가 (Statistical Assessment on the Heavy Metal Variation in the Soils around Abandoned Mine(Case Study for the Samgwang Mine))

  • Heavy metal concentrations in the soil were investigated for the abandoned Samkwang metal mine, Cheongyang-Gun, Chungnam Province, Korea. The concentrations of heavy metal(As, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) were determined in mine soils collected at the abandoned mine sites to obtain a general classification and specification of the pollution in this highly polluted region. The results estimated with the normal test and basis statistic on the central tendency and variation showed that the distribution of heavy metal concentration had significantly different at the range of all locations. The range of spatial distribution on the relationship of heavy metal concentration and pH was $4.8{\sim}8.8$ and heavy metal concentration on the type of land use was highest in forest land, and also Ni and Zn in farm and rice field showed the high concentration. The distribution of heavy metal concentration on the depth of a soil showed that the metal concentrations in subsoil were higher than of those in surface soil, while the concentration of Cu and Ni had no significant difference on the depth of soil. Results from the correlation analysis using the data except the extreme and unusual data revel that Zn-Cd(r=0.867), Zn-As(r=0.797), Zn-Pb(r=0.764), Cu-Cd(r=0.673), Cu-As(r=0.614) and Zn-Ni(r=0.605) were the most important parameters in assessing variations of heavy metal in soil. To discriminate pattern differences and similarities among samples, principal factor analysis(PFA) and cluster analysis(CF) were performed using a correlation matrix. This study suggests that PFA and CF techniques are useful tools for identification of important heavy metal and parameters. This study presents the necessity and usefulness of multivariate statistical assessment of complex databases in order to get better information about the quality of soil and gives the basis information to clean up the abandoned mine sites.

미용실의 $PM_{10}$과 중금속 농도에 관한 연구 (A Study of $PM_{10}$ and Heavy Metal Concentration in Beauty Shops)

  • Hair driers and chemicals used in beauty shops generate a number of heavy metals and $PM_{10}$. Also many $PM_{10}$ are produced during hair cut. The pollutions raised health problems and uncomfortableness to hair dressers and customers in beauty shops. This study investigated to assess indoor, outdoor and personal particulate pollutants ($PM_{10}$ and Heavy metals) mean concentrations and the source of the pollutants in beauty shops. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The measured mean concentrations of respiratory particulates were $30.5ng/m^2$ in indoor, $30.5ng/m^2$ in outdoor and$44.0ng/m^2$ on personal levels. The personal concentration was found higher than indoor and outdoor concentrations. 2. The heavy metals mean concentrations were showed as indoor (Na>Zn>Cr), outdoor (Cr>Zn>Pb), and personal (Na>Cr>Zn) levels. 3. Chemicals and hair driers were regarded as the major sources of the pollutions. 4. Na was correlated with Mg, Zn and Cd, while Mg was correlated with Ni. Mn was correlated with Cu, Zn and AS, where as Cu was correlated with Zn, As and Cd. Zn and As, and Asand Cd were correlated each other. Na was inversely correlated with Cr.

적작약약침(赤芍藥藥鍼)이 관절염(關節炎)에 미치는 실험적(實驗的) 연구(硏究) (Study on the effect of Aqua-acupuncture solution of Paeonia lactiflora on Collagen-Induced Arthritis of Mouse)

  • In order to investigate experimentally that the effect of aqua-acupuncture solution of Paeonia lactiflora on arthritis of mice induced by collagenII, the author performed several experimental items : that is increase, paw thickness, DTH, weight of spleen, hematological change, expression of $CD4^+$, $CD8^+$, $CD19^+$, gene expression of IL-1, IL-6, IL-12, IFN-${\gamma}$, TNF, proliferation of synovial cells and cytotoxicity. The results were obtained as follows; 1. Inhibitory effects of aqua-acupuncture solution of Paeonia lactiflora on arthritis induced by collgenII. 1) In incidence, paw edema, AI and DTH were inhibited as compared with control group. 2) The splenic weight was increased and the number of leukocytes was decreased as compared with control group. 3) The number of $CD4^+$, $CD8^+$ activated cells and surface-receptor expression were increased as compared with control group. 4) In hematological change, total protein, creatinine and LDH were decreased significantiy as compared with control group. 2. FACS analysis on normal BABL/c of spenic cells treated with aqua-acupuncture solution of Paeonia lactiflora. 1) Aqua-acupuncture solution of Paeonia lactiflora activated adhesive splenic cells of mice morphologically in vitro. 2) Aqua-acupuncture solution of Paeonia dactiflora enhanced the gene expression of IL-12 and also enhanced that of interferon-${\gamma}$ remarkably. 3) Aqua-acupuncture solution of Paeonia lactiflora reduced the number of $CD4^+$, $CD8^+$, $CD19^+$ activated cells and their surface-receptor expression as compared with control group. 3. Effects of aqua-acupuncture solution of Paeonia lactiflora on human synovial cells. 1) In cytotoxicity against synovial cells, aqua-acupuncture solution of Paeonia lactiflora didn't show cytotoxicity at concentration of $10-100{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ but showed significantly at concentration of $200-400{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ as compared with control group. 2) Aqua-acupuncture solution of Paeonia lactiflora reduced the gene expression of IL-6, IL-$1{\beta}$ and TNF-${\alpha}$. 3) Aqua-acupuncture solution of Paeonia lactiflora inhibited proliferation of synovial cells at concentration of 100 and $200{\mu}g/m{\ell}$.
