SRB(Sulfate Reducing Bacteria) converts sulfate into sulfide using an organic carbon source as the electron donor. The sulfide formed precipitates the various metals present in the AMD (Acid Mine Drainage). This study is the fundamental research on heavy metal removal from AMD using SRB. Two completely mixed anaerobic reactors were operated for cultivation of SRB at the temperature of $30^{\circ}C$ and anaerobic batch reactors were used to evaluate the effects of carbon source, COD/sulfate($SO_4^=$) ratio and alkalinity on sulfate reduction rate and heavy metal removal efficiency. AMD used in this study was characterized by low pH 3.0 and 1000mg/l of sulfate and dissolved high concentration of heavy metals such as iron, cadmium, copper, zinc and lead. It was found that glucose was an organic carbon source better than acetate as the electron donor of SRB for sulfate reduction in AMD. Amount of sulfate reduction maximized at the COD(glucose)/sulfate ratio of 0.5 in the influent and then removal efficiencies of heavy metals were 97.5% of Cu, 100% of Pb, 100% of Cr, 49% of Mn, 98% of Zn, 100% Cd and 92.4% of Fe. Although sulfate reduction results in an increase in the alkalinity of the reactor, alkalinity of 1000mg/1 (as $CaCo_3$) should be should be added continuously to the anaerobic reactor in order to remove heavy metals from AMD.
This study was carried out to evaluate the concentrations of heavy metal in hair of the inhabitants of Jeon-Ju industrial area. The major findings of this study are as follows 1. The average content of lead in hair of the inhabitants of Jeon-Ju industrial area was 15.06$\pm$ 4.06 ppm and the content of lead of driver's hair showed higher than that of house wives and students, and showed significance statistically ( P < 0.05). 2. The average content of cadmium by occupation in hair of inhabitants of Jeon-Ju industrial area was 0.76$\pm$ 0.21 ~ 0.52$\pm$ 0.16 ppm and the cadmium concentration in hair of driver's showed the highest level among occupations and showed significance statistically (P < 0.05). 3. Lead and cadmium contents in the hair of the inhabitants of Jeon-Ju industrial area showed higher than that of control area residents and showed significance statistically ( P < 0.05 ). 4. The contents between lead and codmium in hair of Jeon-Ju industrial area residents revealed high degree of correlation ( r = 0.7938).
Cadmium ion-tolerant microorganisms were isolated from the sludge and soil of a cadmium ion-polluted area, a zinc mineralized area, in Kyung Sang Pook Do, Korea. A strain, C-7, which showed tile highest tolerance to cadmium ion was selected by screening from 18 cadmium tolerant microorganisms. By the taxonomical characteristics of this strain, it was identified as a variant of Erwinia sp.. The strain grew in a medium cadmium ion up to a concentration of 2, 800 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml and the maximum intercellular accumulation of Cd$^{2+}$ was measured to be 28.60 mg/g dried cells (57.2%) during incubation in medium containing 50 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml under aerobic condition at 28$^{\circ}C$ for 24 hour.r.
In nature, the overall effect of heavy metals on the biota can be influenced by a number of environmental factors like soil characteristics and air pollution by elevated $CO_2$. Pillbugs (Isopoda, Armadillium vulgare) take up heavy metals with their food and store them mainly in the vesicles of hepatopancreas. They accumulate certain metals, occur in relatively large numbers, are easily collected and identified, and provide sufficient material for analysis. The species are decomposing litter well and soil impurities into N and P. Therefore, it has been suggested that total body concentration of metals in pillbugs could be positively correlated to the levels of environmental exposure and that pillbugs could be used as biological indicators of metal pollution and global change by $CO_2$. The aim of the study is to determine effects of heavy metal concentrations in soil and elevated $CO_2$ on pillbugs' body accumulation of heavy metal and growth rate. In this study, the concentrations of six metals (Fe, Mg Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd) have been determined. Pillbugs (N=287) were collected at five sites during Jul-Aug, 2006. Cu and Zn concentrations in the body were much higher than in the soils(1.39-41.70 times). This indicated that bioaccumulation of some of the heavy metals were increasing in the food-chain. The high bioconcentration of lead in Sangam may be partly associated with reclaimed land uses.
For the non-destructive multi-elemental analysis of environmental and biological materials, instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) was applied for the determination of toxic and trace elements in a set of three Algae samples provided by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The analytical quality control was evaluated by comparing the analytical results of two standard reference materials of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST); Oyster Tissue (SRM 1566a) and Citrus Leaves (SRM 1572). According to given analytical procedure, the concentration of 15-25 elements including spiked elements such as As, Cd, Cr and Hg in Algae samples were determined. To identify and validate these results, a data intercomparison program using more than 35 analytical methods in 150 laboratories was carried out and the estimated statistical data are summarized. Result of INAA is favorable, therefore, it is illustrated that can be applied for routine analysis of essential and toxic elements in algae samples as well as analytical quality assurance.
We conducted human risk assessment due to inhalation exposure to heavy metals emitted from incinerator. The process of health impact assessment(HIA) on incinerator is as follows: The first step is to presume and calculate the amount of heavy metals emitted using emission factor. The second step is to conduct an exposure assessment using the K-SCREEN model which is used for predicting the concentration in a conservative method. The last step is to carry out a risk assessment on carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic substances. This study revealed that rank of carcinogenic human risk was $Cr^{+6}$ > As > Ni > Cd, and values of human risk assessment on carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic substances is lower than the US criteria for risk assessment except $Cr^{+6}$. It is expected that the technique of HIA, especially human risk assessment on heavy metals, would be applied to the incinerator construction project. In addition, more systematic studies are needed to overcome some weak points and limits found in this study.

Three Arsenazo I-XAD Chelating resins, with different surface areas and pore sizes were synthesized and characterized. The total sorption capacities of these chelating resins for Cu(II) at pH 5.0 by batch method decreased as follows, Arsenazo I-XAD-16(0.59mmol/g)>Arsenazo I-XAD-4(0.56mmol/g)>Arsenazo I-XAD-2(0.38mmol/g). The sorption and desorption properties of Arsenazo I-XAD-16 chelating resins for U(VI), Th(IV), Hf(IV), Zr(IV), Ni(II), Mn(II), Cd(II). and Cu(II) were studied by both batch and elution method. The Arsenazo I-XAD-16 chelating resin was successfully applied to the separation and concentration of trace U(VI) and Th(IV) in sea and waste waters.

Silver nanowire (AgNW) networks have been adopted as a front electrode in Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) thin film solar cells due to their low cost and compatibility with the solution process. When an AgNW network is applied to a CIGS thin film solar cell, reflection loss can increase because the CdS layer, with a relatively high refractive index (n ~ 2.5 at 550 nm), is exposed to air. To resolve the issue, we apply solution-processed ZnO nanorods to the AgNW network as an anti-reflective coating. To obtain high performance of the optical and electrical properties of the ZnO nanorod and AgNW network composite, we optimize the process parameters - the spin coating of AgNWs and the concentration of zinc nitrate and hexamethylene tetramine (HMT - to fabricate ZnO nanorods. We verify that 10 mM of zinc nitrate and HMT show the lowest reflectance and 10% cell efficiency increase when applied to CIGS thin film solar cells.

In order to remove the heavy metals from synthetic wastewater containing Pb, Cr, and Cd, the experiment was conducted with a variety of concentration and pH by using the washed and dried coffee grounds as adsorbent. Almost of the heavy metals were removed in thirty minutes and the removal efficiency was maximized to the 80 percents following the different pH conditions. Furthermore, in the case of Cr, the removal efficiency was declined with the increasing of pH. As a result of this study, coffee grounds is proved to be a very good adsorbent to remove the heavy metals.

This study was conducted to assess the health risk of carcinogenic heavy metals such as arsenic, nickel, chromium and cadmium Ambient concentrations of these metals were measured bimonthly, during May 1987 to March 1988. Respirable Particle concentrations of As, Ni, Cr, Cd in traffic area(Shinchon) were 16ng/㎥, 43ng/㎥, 4.2ng/㎥, 6.6ng/㎥, respectively, and in residential area(Bulkwang) were 25ng/㎥, 32ng/㎥, 4.7ng/㎥, 8.9ng/㎥, respectively. Carcinogenic risk of each metal was calculated by multiplication of ambient concentration and unit risk of the metal which was referred to recent version of Integrated Risk Information System(IRIS). Sum of the risk from these for metals was 9.8$\times$10$^{-5}$ as individual risk in traffic area and 13.9$\times$10$^{-5}$ in residential area.
