  • The retention of a molten pool vessel cooled by internal vessel reflooding and/or external vessel reactor cavity flooding has been considered as one of severe accident management strategies. The present numerical study investigates the effect of both internal and external vessel mixed cooling on an internally heated molten pool. The molten pool is confined in a hemispherical vessel with reference to the thermal behavior of the vessel wall. In this study, our numerical model used a scaled-down reactor vessel of a KSNP (Korea Standard Nuclear Power) reactor design of 1000 MWe (a Pressurized Water Reactor with a large and dry containment). Well-known temperature-dependent boiling heat transfer curves are applied to the internal and external vessel cooling boundaries. Radiative heat transfer has been considered in the case of dry internal vessel boundary condition. Computational results show that the external cooling vessel boundary conditions have better effectiveness than internal vessel cooling in the retention of the melt pool vessel failure.

  • The insufflators in endoscopic surgery supply carbon dioxide to make the air-filled cavity in the abdomen. It contains many kinds of pneumatic and electronic parts and they are connected with the air tubes and electrical wires. The printed circuit boards (PCB) perform wiring, holding and cooling tasks in electronic systems. In this study, the PCB is used as the air channel for insufflators to decrease the cost, volume, and the malfunction according to aging of the device. Three layers of PCB made of FR4 are combined with prepreg as adhesive which has the internal airway channel according to the design. By mounting the pressure sensors and valves, the PCB based fluidic system is implemented. After calibration of flow sensor, the flow rate of the gas also can be measured. The climate test, temperature test, and biocompatibility test showed this idea can be used in insufflators for laparoscopic surgery.

  • A computer program which consists of pre-processor, main solidification simulator and post-processor has been developed for three dimensional solidification analysis of steel castings. The pre-processor is used for mesh generation in a small personal computing system. The modified finite difference method is adopted for the main solidification simulation algorithm. The post -processor graphically presents the simulation results and shows the formation of shrinkage defects. Several experiments on large steel castings in sand mold were carried out. The temperature variations in casting and mold with time are measured experimentally, and the results are compared with calculation results. Several numerical examples for the prediction of shrinkage cavity in large steel casting of SC42 and SCNCrM2 alloys are compared with experimental results. The effect of sleeve and chills on solidification patterns are also studied. Formation of shrinkage defects for the three cases of experimental castings are relatively well predicted by present model.

  • Since the dimension of cold forged part is larger than the cavity size of forging die, the difference results from the various features, such as, the elastic characteristics of die and workpiece, thermal influences, and machine-elasticity. All of these factors should be considered to get more accurate prediction of the dimension of forged part. In this paper, severe FE techniques are proposed to improve the prediction accuracy of dimension for cold forged part. To validate the importance of the above mentioned factors, and the estimated results are compared with the experimental results. The used model is a closed die upsetting of cylindrical billet. The calculated dimensions are well coincided with .the measured values based on the proposed techniques. The proposed techniques have put two simple but important points into Fe simulation. One is the separation of forging stages into 3 steps, from a loading through punch retraction to ejecting stage. The other is the dimensional change, according to the temperature changes due to the deformation. The FE analysis could predict the dimension of cold forged part within the $10{\mu}m$, based on the more realistic consideration.

  • Recently many people have been troubled with perennial allergic rhinitis. But there is no way to cure for root of it until now. Therefore many medical treatments to release symptoms of perennial allergic rhinitis have been researched. One of them is localized aerosol hyperthermia, which injects $42^{\circ}C{\sim}43^{\circ}C$ vapor into nasal cavity. Vapor inhalator for localized aerosol hyperthermia has been researched in foreign country. But on the other hand it has rarely been researched inside of the country. Since most clinics and hospitals have used imported vapor inhalator, it is needed to develop domestic vapor inhalator. In the paper, a superior vapor inhalator compared to former developed one is developed. The superiority of it comes from direct-vapor heating instead of water heating to control vapor temperature. The developed vapor inhalator has shorter rising time than the existing one because of direct-vapor heating. Furthermore vapor generation part and control part of the vapor inhalator developed as one piece mock-up. It enables the vapor inhalator to have smaller size. Many laboratory tests are performed and compared to existing results to prove its performance.

  • In this paper, in order to get micro or nano size optical patterns, an analytical and experimental investigation on a LGP (light guide plate) injection molding process has performed. The LGP, which diffusing and emitting the light from the CCFL or the LEDs to the panel front direction uniformly, typically has an under 1mm thick base substrate and numerous 60 to $170{\mu}m$ width and 6 to $10{\mu}m$ thick dot patterns on it. Generally, the small size LGPs, for mobile devices, have been and are being made of PMMA through the injection molding process. However, the substrate thickness and the dot pattern size are decreasing, it becomes hard to fill the micro to sub-micro cavities completely. To investigate the flow behavior of resin in micro/nano cavities and identify the characteristics of the LGP injection molding process, we carried out the flow analyses with respect to the variations of the substrate thickness, the dot pattern size and the pitch of a cavity.

  • Single crystals of the superconducting Y-Ba-Cu oxide were grown by a flux technique. Stoichiometric mixture with excess BaO and CuOcontent was melted at 130$0^{\circ}C$, followed by fast cooling to 108$0^{\circ}C$ to prevent crystallizing of CuO. It was then reheated to 110$0^{\circ}C$ followed by being held at this temperature to control the number of nuclei, and cooled by 5$^{\circ}C$/hr to 80$0^{\circ}C$. This procedure was repeated with various compositions and crystals were obtained in cavity. Molten solution was seperated to two parts : the upper part of almost CuO and the rest of different composition. Appropriate composition of flux was 30mol% BaO and 70mol% CuO due to the seperation of molten solution. Single crystals have the habit of thin plate with good developed (001) crystal face, XRD, EDAX and single crystal X-ray investigations were carried out. The grown crystals have tetragonal structure with the lattice parameters a=b=3.84$\AA$, c=11.7$\AA$, and the space group P4/mmm. The crystal surface were observed by SEM.

  • Asymmetric creep behaviors of ceramics under high temperature were investigated. Based on the Norton's power-low creep equation, multidirectional creep equations were proposed for general geometric loading conditions. The proposed equations were implemented into finite element program (ABAQUS) to simulate creep behaviors of ceramics in complicated loading conditions. The calculated results were compared with experimental data for uniaxial compression of Si-SiC C-ring and flexure of Si-SiC and $Al_2O_3$ in the literature. The finite element results agreed well with experimental data when the principal stresses are smaller than the threshold stress for creep damage. A good agreement was also obtained for damage zone in Si-SiC bending creep specimen compared with experimental data.

  • Human NeuNAc-9-P synthase is a two-domain protein with ability to synthesize both NeuNAc-9-P and KDN-9-P. Its mouse counterpart differs by only 20 out of 359 amino acids but does not produce KDN-9-P. By replacing the AFL domain of the human NeuNAc-9-P synthase which accommodates 12 of these differences, with the mouse AFL domain we examined its importance for the secondary KDN-9-P synthetic activity. The chimeric protein retained almost half of the ability of the human enzyme for KDN-9-P synthesis while the NeuNAc-9-P production was reduced to less than 10%. Data from the homology modeling and the effect of divalent ions and temperature on the enzyme activities suggest conformational differences between the human and mouse AFL domains that alter the shape of the cavity accommodating the substrates. Therefore, although the AFL domain itself does not define the ability of the human enzyme for KDN-9-P synthesis, it is important for both activities by aiding optimal positioning of the substrates.

  • Flow motion and variation of thermal field around a bubble which attached at the upper cooled solid wall in a $B\dot{e}nard$ convection flow is studied experimentally using thermo-sensitive liquid-crystal tracers and image processing for flow visualization and analysis. The air is injected gradually by $0.1m\ell$ to make the bubble. As the growing of the bubble in a $B\dot{e}nard$ convection flow, the variation of temperature field and surface tension along the bubble, which in turn cause to change the thermal field patterns and the flow direction and patterns. 6 cells flow pattern is transformed into diverse flow pattern. At the large size of a bubble, it's only conduction mechanism under the region of the bubble because of low Ra number 1137, but the convection flow both sides of the bubble leads to another convection flow in the bubble influence area which has been remained stable stagnation.
