  • The Reynolds equation is commonly used to investigate the lubrication characteristics of a spool valve. However, the applicability of the Reynolds equation is questionable for analyzing a spool valve because cavitation often occurs in the grooves of the valve and the depth of a groove is much higher than the clearance in most cases. In this study, the validity of the Reynolds equation in the spool valve analysis is investigated by comparing the results obtained from the Reynolds equation and those obtained from the Navier-Stokes equation. The results are compared in terms of the lateral forces, friction forces, and volume flow rates (leakages). A significant difference of more than 20% is found in the lateral forces in cases where cavitation occurs and there are many grooves. Therefore, the Navier-Stokes equation should be used to investigate the lubrication characteristics of a spool valve when cavitation occurs and when the spool valve contains many grooves.

  • The spray characteristics and drop size measurements have been experimentally studied in liquid jets injected into subsonic crossflow. With water as fuel injection velocity, injection angle and atomizer internal flows were varied to provide of jet operation conditions. The injector internal flow was classified as three modes such as a non-cavitation flow, cavitation, and hydraulic flip flows. Pulsed Shadowgraph Photography measurement was used to determine the spatial distribution of the spray droplet diameter in a subsonic crossflow of air. And this study also obtains the SMD(Sauter Mean Diameters) distribution by using PLLIF(Planar Liquid Laser Induced Fluorescence) technique. The objectives of this research are getting a droplet distribution and drop size measurement of each condition and compare with the other flows effect. As the result, This research have been showed the droplet size were spatially dependent on air-stream velocity, fuel injection velocity, injection angle effects and normalized distance from the injector exit length.(x/d, y/d)There are also different droplet size characteristics between cavitation, hydraulic flip and the non-cavitation flows.

  • In order to improve the propeller cavitation performance composed of Cavitation Inception Speed (CIS), cavitation extent and pressure fluctuation, it needs to improve the wake distribution that flows into the propeller. The warship propeller cavitation is strongly influenced by the wake created at the V-strut of various appendages. The inflow characteristics of the V-strut were investigated using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and the twisted angles of the V-strut were aligned with upstream flow. The resistance and self-propulsion tests for the model ship with the existing and modified V-struts were conducted in Towing Tank (TT), and wake distribution, CIS, cavitation observation and pressure fluctuation tests were conducted in Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT). The propeller behind the modified V-strut showed better cavitation characteristics than that behind the existing V-strut. Another model test was conducted to investigate rudder cavitation performance by the change of the V-strut. The rudder cavitation characteristics were not improved by the change of the operating conditions. On the basis of the present study, it is thought that the stern appendages for better propeller cavitation performance would be developed.

  • Spray formation mechanism was controlled by a cavitation inside an injection nozzle. Nozzle geometry affects spray characteristics and formation behavior, which could determine engine performance and pollutant formation. A study was carried out on the influence of aspect ratio on cavitation inside a nozzle. The cavitation model available in Star-CD code was used to obtain cavitation behavior inside nozzle, which was compared with previous experimental results. In this paper, a CFD approach combining multiphase Volume-of-Fluid(VOF) and k-model was applied. The numerical results are similar with the experimental results.

  • The turbopump inducer cavitation is very important for the success of a liquid rocket engine. In this study, the performance test and cavitation performance test were carried out at various rotational speeds with two inducers of different diameter. The rotational speed was varied by 4000, 6000, and 8000 rpm, and the size effect was tested for the normal inducer and twice-enlarged one. The hydraulic performance results showed that the similarity was satisfied over the entire test range of the present study. The blade thickness effect was examined and showed that the increased blade thickness resulted in decreased efficiency and worse cavitation performance for the large tip clearance. The cavitation performance test results showed that the breakdown NPSH increased as the flow coefficient, and was not affected by the rotational speed.

  • Studies on cavitation instabilities of hydrofoils and cascades are reviewed to obtain fundamental understandings of the instabilities observed in turbopump inducers. Most of them are based on the stability analysis of two-dimensional inviscid cavitating flow. The most important finding of the analysis is that the cavitation instabilities depend only on the mean cavity length. For a hydrofoil, the characteristic length is the chord length and partial/transitional cavity oscillation occurs with shorter/longer cavity than 75% of the chord length. For cascades, the characteristic length is the blade spacing and various modes of instabilities are predicted when the mean cavity is longer than 65% of the spacing. In the last part, rotating choke is shown to occur when the cavity becomes longer than the spacing.

  • Hydraulic performance and cavitation characteristics of fuel pump in turbopump were studied experimentally. This fuel pump has a centrifugal impeller with a separate inducer. In this paper, static pressure distribution of inducer was examined in non-cavitation and cavitation conditions. As cavitation came, the rising curve of static pressure in front of inducer was lightened because blade lodging did. In result, this offered the mechanism that recirculation zone could be small in case that recirculation was generated in low flow rate.

  • This study strives to develop an effective strategy to inhibit cavitation inception on hydrofoils by using local cooling technique. By setting up a temperature boundary condition and cooling a small area on the upper surface of a hydrofoil, the fluid temperature around the cooling surface will be decreased and thereby the corresponding liquid saturation pressure will drop below the lowest absolute pressure within the flow field. Hence, cavitation can never occur. In this paper, a NACA0015 hydrofoil at $4^{\circ}$ angle of attack was numerically investigated to verify the effectiveness of the proposed technique. The CFD results indicate that the cooling temperature and the cooling surface roughness are the critical factors affecting the success of such technique used for cavitation suppression.
