  • To investigate the influence of blade profiles on cavitation behavior in impeller of centrifugal pump, a centrifugal pump with five different blade profiles impellers are studied numerically. The impellers with five different blade profiles (single arc, double arcs, triple arcs, logarithmic spiral and linear-variable angle spiral) were designed by the in-house hydraulic design code using geometric parameters of IS 150-125-125 centrifugal pump. The experiments of the centrifugal pump have been conducted to verify numerical simulation model. The numerical results show that the blade profile lines has a weak effect on cavitation inception near blade inlet edge position, however it has the key effect on the development of sheet cavitation in impeller, and also influences the distribution of sheet cavitation in impeller channels. A slight changing of blade setting angle will induce significant difference of cavitation in impeller. The sharp changing of impeller blade setting angle causes obvious cavitation region separation near the impeller inlet close to blade suction surface and much more flow loss. The centrifugal pump with blade profile of setting angle gently changing (logarithmic spiral) has the super cavitation performance, which means smaller critical cavitation number and lower vapor cavity volume fraction at the same conditions.

  • Flow pattern of cavitation around a plano-convex foil, whose shape is similar to the inducer impeller of the turbo-pumps in the liquid fuel rocket engine, was observed by using a cryogenic cavitation tunnel of blowdown type for visualization. Working fluids were liquid nitrogen and hot water. The parameter range to be varied was between 20 and 60mm for channel width, 20 and 60mm for foil chord, -1.8 and 13.2 for cavitation number, 3.7 and 19.5m/sec for averaged inlet velocity, $8.5{\times}10^4$ and $1.5{\times}10^6$ for Reynolds number, -8 and $8^{\circ}$ for angle of attack, respectively. Especially at positive angle of attack, namely, convex surface being downstream, the whole cavity or a part of the cavity on the foil surface departs periodically. Periodic cavitation occurs only in case of smaller cavitation size than twice foil chord. Cavitation thickness and length in 20mm wide channel are larger than those in 60mm due to the wall confinement effect. Therefore, periodic cavitation in 60mm wide channel easily occurs than that in 20mm. These results suggest that the periodic cavitation is controlled by not only the hydrodynamic effect of vortex shedding but also the channel wall confinement effect.

  • We have developed a numerical scheme to reproduce the unsteady flows with cavitation by the finite-difference method. The evolution of cavitation is represented by the source/sink of vapor phase in the incompressible liquid flow. The pressure-velocity coupling is based on the fractional-step method for incompressible fluid flows, in which the compressibility is taken into account through the low Mach number assumption. We applied our method for the cavitating flows in a two-dimensional cascade, which approximates the portion near the tip of inducer in liquid-fuel engine. Particular attention was focused on the influence of turbulence model in this report. Using an eddy viscosity model, although it was not an optimized one for our purpose, the agreement with the experimental observation was improved.

  • As distinct from a slender body, the separation of the boundary layer on a bluff body give rise to complex wakes in which various kinds of vortices form, develop and interact with each other. In this paper, we investigate cavitation wake field behind wedge shaped two-dimensional fin models. Eight different models are tested at the Chungnam National University Cavitation Tunnel (CNU-CT). First, we measure wake cavity shapes and compare with numerical results, which shows the good agreement with each other. In addition, we demonstrate that wake flow characteristics of the control fin are clearly identified by the correlation analysis of high-speed camera images and pressure fluctuation measurements.

  • The vortex flow behind a bluff body has been a subject of interest for a very long time because of its engineering applicability such as to vortex induced vibration. In the near wake of a bluff body, vortices are periodically shed in two shear layers, which originate in the trailing edges. The far wake is made up of the classical Karman vortices, which are connected together by streamwise and spanwise vortices. These vortex formations have been studied in many experimental and numerical ways. However, most of the studies considered non-cavitating flow. In this study, we investigated cavitating flow in the wake of a two-dimensional wedge. Experiments were conducted in a cavitation tunnel of Chungnam National University. Using a particle image velocimetry (PIV), we measured the velocity fields under two different flow conditions: non-cavitating and cavitating regimes. We also investigated the vortex shedding frequencies using an absolute pressure transducer mounted on the top of the test window. Throughout the experiments, it was found that the shedding frequency of the vortex was strongly affected by cavitation, and the Strouhal number could exceed its value in the non-cavitating regime.

  • Copper alloys are commonly applied to ship's propellers, pumps and valves which are serviced in seawater due to their good castability and corrosion resistance. In the environment of high flow velocity, however, erosion damage predominates over corrosion damage. In particular, the cavitation in seawater environment accelerates surface damage to copper alloys, resulting in degradation of products and economic losses and also threatening safety. The surface was coated with WC-27NiCr by high velocity oxygen fuel(HVOF) spraying technique to attain durability and cavitation resistance of copper alloys under high velocity/pressure flow. The cavitation test was performed for the WC-27NiCr coating deposited by HVOF in seawater at the amplitude of $30{\mu}m$ with seawater temperature. The cavitation at $15^{\circ}C$ caused exfoliation of the coating layer in 17.5 hours while that of $25^{\circ}C$ caused the exfoliation in 12.5 hours. When the temperature of seawater was elevated to $25^{\circ}C$ from $15^{\circ}C$, more damage was induced by over 160%. Although WC-27NiCr has good durability, corrosion resistance and eletrochemical stability, the cavitation damage rate of the coating layer could remarkably increase at the elevated temperatures under cavitation environments.

  • The inducers in liquid-rocket engines are to increase the inlet pressure of the pump to avoid any malfunction due to cavitation. Inducers are typically designed to be operated with some amount of cavitation for the compactness of the turbopump system. Also, inducers are designed to produce low headrise to prevent the decrease of the overall pump efficiency due to the low efficiency of inducers. In the present paper, a computational study on the hydrodynamic behavior of the inducer for the rocket-engine turbopump are presented including the effect of the mass flow rate under the constant rotational speed. As the mass flow rate is decreased, the inducer showed better performance with strong back flows which may have deleterious effects upon the anti-cavitation ability. But the adopted inducer showed very low headrise with high volume flow rates, which may be caused by the small passage area near the trailing edge. The modified version of the present inducer is proposed and numerically evaluated, which in turn showed better results.

  • Cavitating flow is usually formed on the surface of a high speed underwater object. When a object moves near a free surface at very high speed, the cavity signature becomes one of the major factors to be overcome by sensors of military satellite. The present work was to study the free surface effect on the ventilated cavitation. The governing equations were Navier-Stokes equations based on a homogeneous mixture model. The multiphase flow solver used an implicit preconditioning method in the curvilinear coordinate system. The cavitation model used here was the one first presented by Merkle et al.(2006) and redeveloped by Park & Ha(2009). Computations considered the free surface effects were carried out with a NACA0012 hydrofoil and the corresponding results were compared with the experimental data to have a good agreement. Calculations were then performed considering the ventilated cavitation, including the effect of non-condensable gas under the free surface effects.
