  • The effect of fluid flow on corrosion and erosion-corrosion of metal is a well-recognized phenomenon in pipelines and machinery equipment, and so on. Not only are fluid hydrodynamics important, but also the corrosiveness of the process or production stream affects the corrosion system. Recent research demonstrates that it is possible to erosion-corrosion(E/C) phenomena in terms of hydrodynamics, electrochemical corrosion kinetics and film growth/removal phenomena. Stress corrosion cracking behavior under cavitation erosion-corrosion of mild steel(SS41) was investigated of base metal and weldment under loaded stress. Main result obtained are as follows : 1) The cavitation erosion sensitivity of base metal affected weight loss is more susceptive than heat affected zone, 2) The corrosion sensitivity affected weight loss of welding heat cycle is less susceptive on stress corrosion under cavitation erosion-corrosion than stress corrosion.

  • Cavitation phenomena during the injection process of the conventional fuel injection pump for a medium-speed diesel engine can cause surface damage with material removal or round-off on the plunger and barrel port and may shorten their expected life time. An experiment of flow visualization was carried out to investigate the main cause of these cavitation damages and find the prevention method. Experimental results of flow visualization show that these damages are mainly affected by fountain-like cavitation and jet-type cavitation generated before and after the end of fuel delivery process and therefore the prevention method was designed to control these cavitation flows. From the visualization and endurance test, it was proved that this method can effectively prevent cavitation damages by controlling cavitation flows.

  • The onset of cavitation causes head and efficiency of a main pump to be reduced significantly and generates vibration and noise. In order to avoid these phenomena, the inlet of the pump is fitted with a special rotor called an inducer, which can operate satisfactorily with extensive cavitation. The motivation of this study is to find out cavitation modes from the inducer inlet pressure signals and event characteristics from outlet ones at various operating conditions. The cavitation modes are analyzed by using a cross-spectral density of fluctuating pressures at the inducer inlet. The time-frequency characteristics of wall pressures downstream of the inducer are presented in terms of event frequency, its duration time, and number of events by using the Choi-Williams distribution.

  • Cavitation is one of the most difficult physical phenomena to understand and predict. Many experimental and computational studies have been conducted for better understanding of the phenomenon. Recently, with the rapid development of computing hardware capacity and numerical methods, considerable advancement is observed in prediction of cavitation using computational fluid dynamics. To that end, many cavitation models have been developed and reported. In the present paper, some of the distinguished cavitation models are categorized and reviewed in terms of the computational frame work and formulation of transport equations. Then those characteristics are compared with each other.

  • The effect of passive film on corrosion of metals and alloys in a static corrosive environment has been studied by many researchers and is well known, however few studies have been conducted on the electrochemical measurement of metals and alloys during cavitation corrosion conditions, and there are no test standards for electrochemical measurements 'During cavitation' conditions. This study used commercially additive manufactured(AM) pure titanium in tests of anodic polarization, corrosion potential measurements, AC impedance measurements, and repassivation. Tests were performed in 3.5% NaCl solution under three conditions, 'No cavitation', 'After cavitation', and 'During cavitation' condition. When cavitation corrosion occurred, the passive current density was greatly increased, the corrosion potential largely lowered, and the passive film revealed a small polarization resistance. The current fluctuation by the passivation and repassivation phenomena was measured first, and this behavior was repeatedly generated at a very high speed. The electrochemical corrosion mechanism that occurred during cavitation corrosion was based on result of the electrochemical properties 'No cavitation', 'After cavitation', and 'During cavitation' conditions.

  • This paper was studied on the cavitation instability of a Solution Pump Inducer in an absorption chiller-heater. Inlet pressure of LiBr and rotational speed at nominal mode are 2,800 Pa and 3,500 rpm respectively. Due to the marginal operation of available NPSH, the cavitation performance of the inducer is critical for the stable operation without the deterioration of head performance. In the study, cavitation performance and its mode of instability was investigated experimentally. Water was used as the working fluid and the test inducer was scaled up as 1.75 times for detail measurements and flow visualization. Inlet pressure was controlled by a vacuum pump. This research focused on types of cavitation instability and phenomena to investigate the possibility of harmful damage due to cavitation instability. Casing wall pressure and instantaneous inlet pressure was measured to observe the unsteady flow characteristics. Through the visualization and spectrum analysis of pressure, the occurrence region and intensity of asymmetric cavitation and cavitation surge are analyzed in the test inducer.

  • The effectiveness of a perforated plate installed additionally at butterfly valve to reduce cavitation which can cause vibration, noise, erosion, and flow path blockage has been investigated using CFD. Rayleigh-Plesset equation was applied to simulate cavitation phenomena. 3D flow simulations have been performed for 6 cases to consider the occurrence of cavitation at the downstream of the valve. From the present results, the perforated plate was thought to be very effective to suppress the cavitation inside of the pipe.

  • Intake pump for waterworks is badly damaged by a small amount of cavitation because of variable water quality and severe operation conditions. In general, the required NPSH for reduced cavitation can be provided by inlet condition, supply air, change pump and inducer. But once the pump has been built and installed there is little that can be done to reduce cavitation damage. In this study, we analysed the cavitation of paldang intake pump and intended to avoid the same phenomena.

  • Underwater cavitation is one of the most important issues because it causes not only vibration and erosion of submerged bodies but also significant flow noise problems. In this paper, flow noise due to cavitation flows around the NACA66 MOD hydrofoil is numerically investigated. The cavitation flow simulation is conducted using the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations based on finite difference methods. To capture the cavitation phenomena accurately and effectively, the homogeneous mixture model with the Merkle's cavitation model is applied. The predicted results are compared with available experimental data in terms of pressure coefficients and volume fraction, which confirms the validity of numerical results. Based on flow field analysis results, hydro-acoustic noise field due to the cavitation flow is predicted using the Ffowcs-Williams and Hawkings equation derived from the Lighthill's acoustic analogy. The typical lift dipole propagation patterns are identified.

  • Spray impingement and fuel film formation models with cavitation have been developed and incorporated into the computational fluid dynamics code, STAR-CD. The spray/wall interaction process was modeled by considering the effects of surface temperature conditions and fuel film formation. The behavior of fuel droplets after impingement was divided into rebound, spread and splash using the Weber number and parameter K(equation omitted). The spray impingement model accounts for mass conservation, energy conservation, and heat transfer to the impinging droplets. The fuel film formation model was developed by integrating the continuity, momentum, and energy equations along the direction of fuel film thickness. Zero dimensional cavitation model was adopted in order to consider the cavitation phenomena and to give reasonable initial conditions for spray injection. Numerical simulations of spray tip penetration, spray impingement patterns, and the mass of film-state fuel matched well with the experimental data. The spray impingement and fuel film formation models have been applied to study spray/wall impingement in high-speed direct injection diesel engines.
