  • In this study, hazards of decomposition and explosion for tert-butylperoxymaleate(TBPM), an organic peroxide, were evaluated by using various equipment to determine the cause of a fire explosion accident. As a result of DSC analysis, the instantaneous power density of TBPM was 26,401 kW/ml, and the NFPA reactive index(Nr) was classified as 4. And the positive value of EP(explosive propagation) and SS(shock sensitivity) showed that the TBPM had a potential hazard of explosion. From the experimental results, the shock sensitivity and friction sensitivity was rated as class 4 and 5, respectively. In the pressure vessel test, TBPM was ranked USA-PVT No.4 and evaluated as a self-reactive substance. In the combustion rate test, TBPM had the combustion rate of 167 mm/sec and was evaluated as the flammable solid classification 2 in GHS.

  • The aircraft fuel system performs a number of functions such as supplying fuel, transferring fuel between fuel tanks, and measuring the amount of residual fuel in each fuel tank. Since it is a direct cause of fire hazard in crash incident, it is a must to improve survivability of crew members by designing the airframe to tolerate expected crash impact. The civil aviation authority requires intensive verification of the fuel system design to determine precise application of the airworthiness requirement. Research activity on airworthiness certification criteria and verification scheme is still insufficient, although it has a significant importance. In this paper, as part of a study to improve flight safety by developing guidelines for demonstrating fuel system crash resistance, analysis results of fuel system crash-related airworthiness certification standards, verification scheme, and cases study applicable to military rotorcraft have been reviewed.

  • Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion(BLEVE) can cause not only economic damage to the plant but also serious casualties. LPG accidents account for 89.6 percent of all accidents caused by gas leaks in Korea over the past nine years, while casualties from accidents also account for 73 percent of all accidents, according to statistics from the Korea Gas Safety Corporation. In addition, a potential explosion and a fire accident from one LPG storage tank may affect the nearby storage tanks, causing secondary and tertiary damage (domino effect). The safety distance standards for LPG used by LPG workplaces, charging stations, and homes in Korea have become stricter following the explosion of LPG charging stations in Bucheon. The safety distance regulation is divided into regulations based on the distance damage and the risk including frequency. This study suggests two approaches to optimizing the safety distance based on the just consequence and risk including frequencies. Using the Phast 7.2 Risk Assessment software by DNV GL, the explosion overpressure and heat radiation were derived according to the distance caused by BLEVE in the worst-case scenario, and accident and damage probability were derived by considering the probit function and domino effect. In addition, the safety distance between LPG tanks or LPG charging stations was derived to minimize damage effects by utilizing these measures.

  • Energy industry facilities can cause fatal damage for internal industry employee as well as external general people because handling various kinds of gas and harmful substance might be spread to large scale severe accident by fire, explosion, and toxic gas leakage. In order to prevent these accidents, quantification by damage effect on structure and human is tried by using quantitative risk assessment, but it is difficult to process instantly exceptional cases and requires knowledge of expert. This paper aims to minimize exceptional cases and knowledge of expert, and present risk with human perceptible. So, we designed and developed zone-base risk analysis system that can compute risk of zone in real time at that point using database and incremental model.

  • Due to the high dependence on electric energy, electric fires make up a significant portion of fires in Korea. Electric arcs by short circuits or poor contact cause three of four electrical fires. An electric arc is a discharge phenomenon of electrical current between the insulators, which instantaneously produces high temperature. In order to reduce the fire due to electric arc, this study aims to predict the electric arc risk. We collected arc data from the arc detectors and converted into graphs based on temporal arc data. We used machine learning for training converted graph with different number of temporal arc data. To measure the performance of the learning model, we use the test data. In the results, when the number of temporal arc data was 20, the prediction rate was high as 86%.

  • Secondary batteries are used as an essential renewable energy source in our lives, such as electric vehicles and energy storage systems (ESS), as an alternative to fossil fuels due to global warming. However, cases of battery fires and explosions have been reported due to thermal runaway in secondary batteries due to various causes such as overdischarge, high-speed charging and discharging, and external short circuit, and great efforts are being made to find solutions suitable for each cause. In particular, as cases presumed to be caused by the overcharging process have been reported, this review will examine the chemical reactions of secondary batteries that can occur during the overcharging process and discuss risk investigation methods to check and prevent them.

  • In recent years, while the demand for electricity is rapidly increasing, fire accidents due to negligence in management of switchboards. In particular, switchboards for industrial and electrical resource control can cause serious problems. Thus, for the safety management of power switchboard, a secondary response is conducted to control firing when a specific condition value is satisfied, but in this case, it is highly likely that a considerable amount of time has elapsed after firing. In this paper, we propose a method to acquire big data for the development of a switchboard temperature and power control system that can actively respond to the current situation by monitoring and learning the temperature of the switchboard's busbar connection in real time. Specifically, a method for periodically acquiring and managing data such as temperature and power from various scattered sensors is proposed.

  • The advancement of industry have increased domestic energy demands and energy facilities such as storage facility, compressed gas pipe, station, and tank lorry. Also, concern about environment have diversified energy source to clean energy such as LNG. In these major energy facilities, major accident can happen to result in fire, explosion, toxic release and etc. In addition, it may cause chain accidents to the adjacent energy facilities. In this research, safety assessment was performed through the consequence analysis of LPG liquefied petroleum gas) station, gasoline station and LNG(liquiefied natural gas) station. The obtained result will be helpful to make a safety guideline of the LPG/LNG station built adjacent to the gasoline station.

  • There are various accident at the Construction site like fall, electric shock, roll over, clash, fire, body cutting. By the way, falls are the most causes accidents. So, the best way of decreasing Construction accidents is decreasing falls. Already, there are many studies about falls accidents, but those studies were pointed out unrealistic because falls accidents are increasing. For that reason, this study look for more concrete device. In this study, grasp the cause of falls accident from 2007 to 2008. 06. 30. And then, stand on this factor I set my face to look for the causes of falls accident. This access means will drive to remove core causes, and then that means will decrease the falls accidents. Moreover that means will contribute decreasing the hole construction accidents.

  • Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is useful statistical technique for finding patterns in data, and expressing the data in such a way as to highlight their similarities and differences. In this paper, 1417 marine casualties occurred in Korean littoral sea in recent 5 years, were examined by the PCA. The main results obtained were as follows : 1. Most of marine casualties resulted from the human factors such as careless operation and insufficient engine maintenance. 2. Collision and standing mainly resulted from steering room-related human factors such as careless guard, inadequate ship-handling, however engine damage and fire explosion mainly resulted from engine room-related human factor such as bad handling of engine system. 3. No. 1 principal component represents accident frequency, No. 2 principal component represents the cause and No. 3 principal component represents the pattern of marine casualties, respectively.
