Infectious calf diarrhea is one of the most significant diseases of neonatal calves. This study is conducted to identify the prevalence of pathogens in calf diarrhea for 2 years. A total of 544 feces samples from Korean native beef calves were obtained to investigate selected seven pathogens causing calf diarrhea: bovine rotavirus, bovine coronavirus, Cryptosporidium parvum, bovine viral diarrhea virus, Eimeria species, Escherichia coli K99, and Salmonella species. The presence of diarrhea, the number and species of detected pathogens, and the calves' ages were analyzed using various statistical methods depending on the case. Of the 544 calves, 340 calves (62.5%) had normal feces and 204 calves (37.5%) had diarrhea. The presence of pathogens was significantly associated with diarrhea (p < 0.01) and fecal scores and the number of detected pathogens showed a significant linear trend (p < 0.001). Of the 7 target pathogens, 6 were detected in samples, but only C. parvum (p = 0.001) and bovine rotavirus (p < 0.001) were found at significantly higher rates in diarrheic calves than in non-diarrheic calves. Only Eimeria spp. showed a significant linear trend between the detection rate of the pathogen and the age groups (p < 0.05).
Causative agents of mastitis were isolated from glandular tissues of 101 culled Holstein cow udders and tested with antimicrobials by standardized disc diffusion method. Pathogens most commonly isolated were coagulase-negative staphylococci (43.9%) and streptococci (21.4%). Most of the udders (88.5%) showed mixed infections with more than two species of bacteria. Antimicrobial sensitivity tests revealed that 90.0% and 84.5% of the isolated organisms were susceptible to amoxicillin and gentamicin, while most organisms were resistant to erythromycin. Coliforms were resistant to ampicillin, cephalothin, cefazolin, erythromycin, kanamycin, neomycin, penicillin and tetracycline and streptococci to erythromycin, kanamycin, neomycin, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole and tetracycline.
Salmonella enterica serovars Gallinarum(SG, causative agent of fowl typhoid) and S Pullorum(SP, causative agent of pullorum disease) are very important bacterial pathogens in poultry industry. They share some common antigenic properties though the characteristics of outbreaks are quite different. To discriminate between SG and SP, we developed two rapid diagnostic methods, allele-specific real-time PCR and 3'-tailed PCR over 2 single nucleotide polymorphisms ($237^{th}\;and\;598^{th}$). In both methods, $237^{th}$ allele was found to be a good target for differential diagnosis, while $598^{th}$ allele produced some non-specific reactions.
A total of 500 sera and lungs of slaughtered pigs were examined to investigate antibody titer, prevalence of pulmonary lesion, and interrelation among lung lesion score, type of pulmonary lesion and antibody titers by ELISA. The results obtained were as follows ; 1. The highest distribution of antibody titer was showed at 20 - 80 in M hyopneumoniae, 160-640 in P multocida type A and 160 - 640 in A pleuropneumoniae serotype 2 and 5. 2. The prevalence of pulmonary lesions was 84.0%, mean pulmonary lesion and mean lung score listed as 24.0$\pm$19.8% and 2.5$\pm$1.6, respectively. 3. In the prevalence of type of pulmonary lesion, enzootic pneumonia, pleuropneumonia and pleuritis were 58.2%, 10.0% and 15.8%, respectively. 4. Lung lesion score and type of pulmonary lesion were not interrelated with the distribution of antibody titer to specific pathogens, and causative pathogens of respiratory diseases were complicated with various bacteria.
Since the 2000s, the major causes of acute gastroenteritis in children in Korea have been identified by classifying the pathogens into viruses, bacteria, and protozoa. For viruses, the detection rate is 20%-30%, and norovirus is being increasingly detected to account for the majority of viral gastroenteritis cases. In addition, despite the dissemination of the rotavirus vaccine, many rotavirus infections persist, and its seasonal distribution is changing. The detection rate of bacterial pathogens is 3%-20%, with Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. infections being the most common, while the incidences of Bacillus cereus and Campylobacter spp. infections are gradually increasing. Owing to intermittent outbreaks of gastroenteritis caused by individual bacteria as well as the inflow of causative bacteria, such as E. coli, Vibrio spp., and Campylobacter spp., from overseas, continuous surveillance of and research into the characteristics and serotypes of each bacterium are needed.

Purpose: We aimed to determine characteristics of host, causative organisms, and antibiotic susceptibility of bacteria in pediatric patients with UTI living in metropolitan area of Korea. Methods: Retrospective investigation was done for the causative organisms of UTI in 683 pediatric cases treated at Ajou University Hospital from 2012 to 2017. Patients were classified into Escherichia coli and non-E. coli group, where E. coli group was subdivided into ESBL(+) and ESBL(-) groups based on whether the bacteria could produce extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL). Antibiotic susceptibility of the causative organism was also determined. Results: A total of 683 UTIs occurred in 550 patients, of which 463 (67.8%) were first-time infection and 87 (32.2%) were recurrent ones (2-7 recurrences, 2.52 average), and 64.9% were male and 35.1% were female. The most common causative organism was E. coli (77.2%) and ESBL(+) E. coli was found in 126 cases. The susceptibility of E. coli to 3rd or 4th generation cephalosporin was relatively higher than that to ampicillin or amoxicillin/clavulanic acid. ESBL(+) E. coli showed higher resistance rate to 3rd or 4th generation cephalosporin than ESBL(-) E. coli. Conclusion: New treatment guideline should be considered due to the incidence of ESBL(+) E. coli increased up to one quarter of UTI cases.
Purpose: This study was conducted to determine the incidence, causative pathogens, risk factors and mortality for early onset sepsis in the first three days in very low birth weight infants. Methods: The medical records of 1,124 very low birth weight infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit of Samsung Medical Center between November 1994 and December 2008 were retrospectively reviewed. The incidence, causative pathogens, risk factors, and mortality for early onset sepsis in the first 3 days of life in very low birth weight infants were evaluated. Results: Early onset sepsis, as confirmed by positive blood cultures, was present in 17 of 1,124 infants (1.5%). Sixty-four percent of the isolated pathogens were gram-positive bacteria and 35% of the isolated pathogens were gram-negative bacteria. The dominant pathogens of early onset sepsis included Staphylococcus aureus (23.5%), Esherichia coli (23.5%), and Enterococcus (17.6%). Vaginal delivery (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 3.7; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.3-10.3; P=0.01) was associated with early onset sepsis. The overall mortality (adjusted hazard ratio, 3.0; 95% CI, 1.4-6.5; adjusted P=0.0039) and mortality within 72 hours of life (adjusted hazard ratio, 6.5; 95% CI, 2.2-18.9; adjusted P=0.0005) of infants with early onset sepsis were higher than that of uninfected infants. Conclusion: Early onset sepsis remains an uncommon, but potentially lethal problem among very low birth weight infants. Knowledge of the likely causative organisms and risk factors for early onset sepsis can aid in instituting prompt and appropriate therapy, in order to minimize mortality.
Purpose: Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) is a major cause of morbidity and remains a major cause of hospitalization. Following the Syrian refugee crisis and insufficient clean water in the region, this study reviews the etiological and epidemiological data in Lebanon. Methods: We prospectively analyzed demographic, clinical and routine laboratory data of 198 children from the age of 1 month to 10 years old who were admitted with the diagnosis of AGE to a private tertiary care hospital located in the district of Nabatieh in south Lebanon. Results: Males had a higher incidence of AGE (57.1%). Pathogens were detected in 57.6% (n=114) of admitted patients, among them single pathogens were found in 51.0% (n=101) of cases that consisted of: Entamoeba histolytica 26.3% (n=52), rotavirus 18.7% (n=37), adenovirus 6.1% (n=12) and mixed co-pathogens found in 6.6% (n=13). Breast-fed children were significantly less prone to rotavirus (p=0.041). Moreover, children who had received the rotavirus vaccine were significantly less prone to rotavirus (p=0.032). Conclusion: Our findings highlight the high prevalence of E. histolytica infection as the major cause of pediatric gastroenteritis in hospitalized children, during the summer period likely reflecting the insanitary water supplies and lack of hygiene. Moreover the 42.4% of unidentified causative pathogens should prompt us to widen our diagnostic laboratory arsenal by adopting new diagnostic technologies.
Purpose: To evaluate correlation between the clinical results and causative bacteria in diabetic foot patients with lower extremity amputation. Materials and Methods: One hundred twenty nine patients(131 feet) of diabetic foot amputations were followed for more than one year. Wound cultures were done by deep tissue or bone debris at first visit to our clinics. Retrospective analysis was performed using chart review and interview with the patients. Depending on the culture result, level of amputation, reinfection, duration of treatment, death rate, patient satisfaction and admission dates were evaluated. Results: Microorganisms were confirmed in 114 cases. In the other 17 cases, there were no cultured microorganisms. In bacterial growth group, Methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus was the most common pathogen and accounted for 34 cases. As other common pathogens, there were Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(24 cases) and mixed infection(14 cases). Mortality is no difference in each infected group. Mixed bacterial infected patients have higher reinfection, longer hospital day and duration of treatment, but there is no difference in patients satisfaction and pain at last follow up. Conclusion: The most common pathogen in diabetic foot patients with lower extremity amputation was Methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus, and mixed bacterial infected patients have higher reinfection rate, longer admission date and duration of treatment than other bacterial infected patients.
Erwinia amylovora and E. pyrifoliae are the causative agents of destructive diseases in both apple and pear trees viz. fire blight and black shoot blight, respectively. Since the introduction of fire blight in Korea in 2015, the occurrence of both pathogens has been independently reported. The co-incidence of these diseases is highly probable given the co-existence of their pathogenic bacteria in the same trees or orchards in a city/district. Hence, this study evaluated whether both diseases occurred in neighboring orchards and whether they occurred together in a single orchard. The competition and virulence of the two pathogens was compared using growth rates in vitro and in planta. Importantly, E amylovora showed significantly higher colony numbers than E. pyrifoliae when they were co-cultured in liquid media and co-inoculated into immature apple fruits and seedlings. In a comparison of the usage of major carbon sources, which are abundant in immature apple fruits and seedlings, E. amylovora also showed better growth rates than E. pyrifoliae. In virulence assays, including motility and a hypersensitive response (HR), E. amylovora demonstrated a larger diameter of travel from the inoculation site than E. pyrifoliae in both swarming and swimming motilities. E. amylovora elicited a HR in tobacco leaves when diluted from 1:1 to 1:16 but E. pyrifoliae does not elicit a HR when diluted at 1:16. Therefore, E. amylovora was concluded to have a greater competitive fitness than E. pyrifoliae.
