  • We observed the osteological development in larvae and juveniles of Korean spotted sleeper Odontobutis interrupta bred in the laboratory in April 2014. Immediately after hatching, the prelarvae, which were about 4.27 mm long, showed ossification of the premaxillary bones in the upper jaw and the dentary and articular bones in the lower jaw. At 7.11 mm, the larvae showed complete fusion of the post-cleithra and ossification of the scapulae with the appearance of one hole. At 8.65 mm, the larvae showed ossification of seven ribs from the third abdominal vertebra and an increase in the length of the neural spine and hemal spine. The number of caudal fin rays increased to 19. At 11.9 mm, the juveniles showed ossification of three procurrent rays on the side of the parhypural bone as well as ossification of two procurrent rays on the side of the epural bone, indicating the complete ossification of all spicules.

  • This study was examined the ovogenesis of Ussurian bullhead, Leiocassis ussuriensis and the morphological development of its larvae and juveniles and to use the results as basic information for the preservation of species and resource enhancement. For artificial egg collection, human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) was injected at a rate of 10 IU per gram of fish weight. During breeding period, water temperature maintained at $24.5{\sim}26.5^{\circ}C$ (mean $25.0{\pm}0.05^{\circ}C$). The process of ovogenesis reached the two-cell stage in 50 minutes after fertilization. In 73 hours of fertilization the movement of the embryoid body became active state and the larvae began to hatch from the tail through the oolemma. Length of prelarvae were 6.33~6.50 mm long (mean $6.40{\pm}0.06mm$) just after hatching having yolk with their mouth not opened. After thirty eight days of hatching, juveniles were 30.6~32.5 mm long (mean $31.5{\pm}0.65mm$). The color was dark yellowish brown throughout the entire body, and the number of caudal fin rays developed to thirty six perfectly.

  • Newly hatched black porgy larvae (Acanthopagrus schlegeli) swam to the surface, with the mouth and anus still closed and were 1.90-2.11 mm (mean, 2.0 mm) in total length (TL). The larvae were 2.71-2.94 mm TL (mean, 2.82 mm) on day 2 after hatching. At this time, about two-thirds of the yolk was absorbed, the bladder and intestines had formed, and the mouth and anus were open. Total length was 4.32-4.66 mm (mean, 4.45 mm) at the post-larval stage on days 5-6 after hatching, and the yolk and oil globule were almost absorbed. The end of the notochord began to flex, and 6-8 caudal fin rays were visible. The larvae were 15.37-16.1 mm TL (mean, 15.83 mm) at the juvenile stage on days 30-32 after hatching, and the number of rays in all fins was completely revealed.

  • Genetic and morphological variations of Rhinogobius giurinus were surveyed. Populations of R.giurinus were clearly divided into two forms (Form-A and Form-B). Starch gel variation of this species. Three loci (Aco, Mpi, aGpd) out of 27 showed fixed allelic differences between Form-A and Form-B and they are well differentiated from each other genetically (Rogers' S=0.871). These two forms, moreover, are found to be allopatric in distribution and morphologi cally different in body length and caudal fin color pattern. Therefore, they are considered as two distinct taxa of subspecific rank. In addition, the genetic relationships among 5 taxa within 4 species of the genus Rhinogobius were investigated. Three species of the Rhinogobius brunneus complex (R.sp. OR, R. sp. CB and R. sp. CO) are well differentiated from each other genetically and two taxa of R. giurinus are genetically divergent from three species of the Rhinosotius brunneus complex (average Nei's D=0.603, average Rogers'=0.534).

  • Furfural, an organic solvent, is widely used as synthetic component material in producing chemical products. However, furfural has been reported that it shows strong toxicities to human being showing intense stimulus to skin, eyes, mucous membrane and nerve system. It is also known to cause anemia, liver cirrhosis, kidney failure and genetic toxicity in the human being working in the exposed area. LD$_{50}$ of furfural for peritoneal injected mouse has been known around 20mg/kg, but the acute toxicity on aquatic organisms such as fish, daphnid or algae are not well known, compared to those on rodents. In this experiment, we studied on the fish toxicity of furfural using Japanese Medaka (Orvzias latipes) and Common Carp (Cvprinus carpio). We also observed histological changes in the fish organs. The LC$_{50}$ were 12. Smg/L in Japanese Medaka and 21.8 mg/L in Common Carp, respectively. When Common Carps were exposed to 120mg/L of furfural concentration for 30 minutes, blood congestion in gills and lysis of secondary lamella were shown. Though the muscle of caudal fin was not completely eroded, its epidermic cells were shown to be necrotic in various parts. Tissue atrophy and cell necrosis were also shown in the liver of Common Carps exposed to furfural. From these results, furfural seems to cause histological damages on liver, an internal organ as well as on external organs such as gills and fins eventhough the fish were exposed for a short-term.

  • This study was carried out to observe the development of the autonomous skeletal development of the Favonigobius gymnauchen. Total length (TL) of larvae 3 days after hatching (DAH) were mean TL of 3.34 mm, with a line-shaped parasphenoid ossification in the cranium and basioccipital ossification in the back. The 10 DAH larvae had a mean TL of 5.20 mm, with the number of caudal vertebrae increasing to 15. The urostyle and two hypural bones in the lower part also began to ossify. The 23 DAH juveniles had a mean TL of 8.47 mm. The pectoral girdle's skeleton was completed as the scapula and coracoid were ossified. The pelvic girdle also fully supported the ventral fin as its ossification was completed. Favonigobius gymnauchen and Tridentiger obscurus showed similar characteristics in terms of the anus location of hatched larvae, number of myotomes, and melanophore distribution during the morphological development of the larvae and juveniles. However, this study confirmed differences in the development of the vertebrae and urostyle bone.
