Effect of feeding a diet comprised of various corn silages inclusion with peanut vine or wheat straw on performance, digestion, serum parameters and meat nutrients in finishing beef cattle

  • Objective: The objective of this study was to compare the feeding value, meat nutrients and associative effects of a diet comprised of various corn silages inclusion with peanut vine or wheat straw in finishing beef cattle. Methods: One hundred and eighty Simmental crossbred beef steers were blocked and assigned to the follow treatments: i) whole plant corn silage-based diet (control, WPCS), ii) mixed forages-based diet (replacing a portion of corn silage with wheat straw, WPCSW), iii) corn stalklage-based diet (CS), and iv) sweet corn stalklage-based diet (SCS). Each group consisted of 5 repeated pens with 9 steers/pen. The diets were formulated to be isonitrogenous and isoenergetic with same forage to concentrate ratio. Experimental diets were fed for 90 d. Results: The effective ruminal degradability of dry matter and crude protein were highest for WPCS diet (p<0.05), for neutral detergent fiber was highest in SCS diet (p<0.05). The average daily gain was greater for cattle offered the WPCS diet, intermediate with WPCSW and SCS and lowest with CS (p<0.001). The concentration of non-esterified fatty acid in serum was higher for steers fed with CS and SCS diets than those offered WPCS and WPCSW steers (p<0.001). The treatments did not affect the general nutritional contents and amino acids composition of Longissimus dorsi of steers (p>0.05). Conclusion: The corn silage-based diet exhibited the highest feeding value. The sweet corn stalklage and wheat straw as an alternative to corn silage offered to beef cattle had limited influence on feeding value and meat nutrients. However, the value of a corn stalklage-based diet was relatively poor. To sum up, when the high quality forage resources, such as corn silage, are in short supply, or the growth rate of beef cattle decreases in the later finishing period, the sweet stalklage and wheat straw could be used as a cheaper alternative in feedlot cattle diet without sharp reducing economic benefits.

  • 농협 한우 개량부에서 시험 사육한 거세우 및 비거세우 각각 60두의 자료를 근거로 곰페르츠 방정식에 의한 성장곡선을 추정한 결과 비거세우의 성장곡선 방정식은 $W_t$ = 906.1.exp{-3.956.exp(-0.0034t)}이었으며, 거세우의 성장곡선 방정식은 $W_t$ = 823.1.exp{-3.301.exp(-0.0027t}이었다. 이 추정식에 의한 성숙체중은 과거에 추정한 식보다 높게 추정되었는데 이는 사양조건의 차이에 의한 것으로 사료된다. 비거세우에 대한 거세우의 체중비는 19.5개월까지는 급격히 감소하여 79.2% 정도에 이르렀으나, 이후 격차는 서서히 줄어들어 성숙시에는 90.8%에 이르렀다. 추정식은 생시 체중이 거세우의 경우 과다하게 그리고 비거세우의 경우 과소하게 추정되었으며, 실제 체중의 변이는 비거세우가 거세우에 비해 큰 경향을 보였다.

Cattle Production on Small Holder Farms in East Java, Indonesia: II. Feeds and Feeding Practices

  • A survey on feeding practices was conducted with thirty-one cattle farmers belonging to three categories: households without land and no income from agricultural labour (Class 100;10 farms), households without land but deriving considerable income from agricultural labour (Class 101;10 farms), and households with land and without income from agricultural labour (Class 110;11 farms). Information on the types of feeds given of one year. In addition, samples of the feeds offered and refused were collected every two weeks and analysed for dry matter, organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP) and in vitro organic matter digestibility (OMD). Grass was usually cut at an early stage of growth, as such the CP(11.8%) and OMD (62%) were relatively high. All types of rice straw (whole, lower and upper part) and sugarcane forage (tops and leaves) were low in CP (<6 and <8.9%, respectively) and OMD (<45 and <47%, respectively). Rice bran and tofu waste was of much better quality than any other feed. The average number of different feeds in the rations (mean of all farms) was 1.98, with a lower value for class 101 (1.80), than for classes 100 and 110 (2.11 and 2.02, respectively). Of the total amount of OM consumed, 42% was rice straw, 21% grass, 19% maize forage, 10% sugarcane forage, <4% other forages (soya and groundnut straw), 1.3% rice bran and 2.9% tofu waste. The total amount of OM offered varied from <80 $g/kg^{0.75}/d$ in August/September to 1.5 times as much in May (P<0.01). The intake of digestible organic matter (IDOM) for farm class 110 ($37.7g/kg^{0.75}/d$) was significantly (p<0.001) lower than that for classes 100 and 101 (44.1 and $41.3g/kg^{0.75}/d$, respectively). The highest CP/IDOM ratio was recorded for farm class 101 (0.201 as compared to 0.181-0.184).

축산 가축 이표용 맥파 센서의 데이터 정확도 분석 (Accuracy Analysis of Pulse Wave Sensor Data of Ear Label of Husbandry Livestock)

  • 본 연구는 가축을 대상으로 이표용 맥파 압력센서, 전도성 섬유센서, 광센서 중 사육 가축에 적용 할 최적의 맥파 센서를 분석하기 위하여 소10마리, 돼지 10마리를 대상으로 맥파 압력센서, 전도성 섬유센서, 광센서를 적용한 결과, 소는 광센서가 압력센서와 전도성 섬유센서에 비하여 평균값에 대한 표준편차가 작은 것으로 나타나 광센서가 가장 안정적인 것으로 나타났고, 돼지는 압력센서, 전도성 섬유센서, 광센서 모두 안정적인 맥파수를 나타냈다. 따라서 소와 같이 신체부의의 굴곡이 많고 털이 길고 조밀한 가축의 경우, 광센서를 이용한 맥파 측정에 가장 효율적인 것으로 나타났다.

Use of Chemical Treatments to Reduce Tannins and Trypsin Inhibitor Contents in Salseed (Shorea robusta) Meal

  • This study investigated the effect of chemical treatments on tannins (condensed and hydrolysable) and on the trypsin inhibitor (TI) activity in salseed meal. Triplicate samples of ground salseed meal (1 kg) were mixed with 820 ml of either distilled water (pH 5.3), 0.67 M acetic acid (pH 2.4), 0.67 M sodium bicarbonate (pH 8.2) or 2% polyvinyl-pyrrolidone (PVP) solution. The material was placed in airtight plastic containers and incubated at $37^{\circ}C$ for 0, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 h. Samples of untreated salseed meal which had not been subjected to soaking or incubation were run through the analysis to serve as control. Addition of water, acetic acid, sodium bicarbonate and PVP solutions to salseed meal and subsequent anaerobic incubation at $37^{\circ}C$ significantly reduced chemically detectable tannins. At each incubation time, alkali solution was more effective than its counterparts. The effect of acidic solution on hydrolysable tannin was least among the treatments. All the treatments reduced TI activity of salseed meal. The reduction in TI activity by these treatments was similar and ranged between 80-84%. Treatment time effected a decrease in the contents of antinutritional substances. However, the effect of the treatment with the reagents, even for zero incubation time, was quite pronounced. It may be concluded from the present results that the treatment of salseed meal with sodium bicarbonate (0.67 M) is more effective in reducing hydrolysable and condensed tannin contents than PVP, water and acid solutions. Treatment with sodium bicarbonate solution is more economical and easier to handle than acid and PVP treatments. Incubation of the treated material for 12 h is reasonably effective, economical and safe from any mould growth.

Of the three kingdoms, Koguryo is believed to have had nomadic life, so the livestock husbandry was vigour, but, in Silla and Paikche, only the horse production as military purpose and cattle production as a mean of cultivation had been improved. 2. In the three Kingdoms, the methods of superstition and Shamanism had been used as the mean of curing animals before Haeza, a saintly priest, A. D 590. and after that, shamanism and veterinary science seemed to be combined. We believed that Haeza is to be an initiator of veterinary science in Korea.

소에서의 전침전달마취(電針傳達麻醉) (Electroacupuncture regional analgesia in cattle)

  • 소에서는 전신마취보다 전달마취로써 대부분의 수술을 수행한다. 본 연구는 9두의 소에서 요방 1혈(제 1요추 횡돌기의 전단), 요방 2혈(제 2요추 횡돌기 후단) 그리고 요방 4혈(제 4요추의 횡돌기 후단)에 침을 삽입하고 2.0~9.5volt와 주파수 30Hz로 통전하여 각종 수술을 실시하였다. 마취 도입에는 10~25분이 소요되었고, 9두중 7두(78%)에서 전침전달마취만으로, 2두 (22%)는 추가 침윤마취로 수술을 원만하게 완료할 수 있었다. 이상의 결과 소에 대한 전침전달마취는 복강수술을 위해서 특히 poor risk 상태에서는 활용될 수 있을 것으로 생각된다.

Effects of Dietary Supplementation with Branched-chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) during Nursing on Plasma BCAA Levels and Subsequent Growth in Cattle

  • To determine the effects of short-term dietary supplementation of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) during nursing (from 3 to 28 days of age) on plasma BCAA levels and subsequent growths in cattle, 12 nursing male Holstein calves, randomly assigned to control and treatment groups (n = 6 in each group), orally received a daily supplement of essential BCAAs (2 g/kg body weight/day; 1:1:1 of valine, leucine and isoleucine) or not. The plasma BCAA levels increased linearly after the administration. During the treatment period, average daily gain (ADG) was lower in the treatment group (0.43${\pm}$0.07 kg/day) than the controls (0.71${\pm}$0.07 kg/day, p<0.05). However, at 2 months of age, ADG was significantly higher in the BCAA-treated group (1.16${\pm}$0.26 kg/day vs. 0.51${\pm}$0.06 kg/day, p<0.05). Furthermore, at age 8, 9 and 10 month, ADG in the treated group (1.35${\pm}$0.23, 1.46${\pm}$0.07 and 1.60${\pm}$0.16 kg/day, respectively) showed a linear increase and was significantly higher than that in the control group (0.88${\pm}$0.14, 0.70${\pm}$0.21 and 1.11${\pm}$0.11 kg/kg, respectively, p<0.05). Overall, ADG was 15.6% higher in the treatment group (1.26${\pm}$0.05 kg vs. 1.09${\pm}$0.04 kg; p<0.05). The final body weight at slaughter was 14.8% higher in the treatment group (759.5${\pm}$17.7 kg vs. 661.7${\pm}$21.2 kg, p<0.01). Thus, the supplementation of BCAAs during nursing improves ADG and carcass weight in cattle and is a useful husbandry technique for beef cattle.

한우 Mitochondrial DNA D-loop 영역의 염기서열 및 유전변이 (Sequence and Genetic Variation of Mitochondrial DNA D-loop Region in Korean Cattle)

  • 본 연구는 한우 mt DNA 염기서열 가운데 $tRNA^{Pro}$$tRNA^{Pre}$ 유전자 사이에 위치하고 있는 D-loop 영역의 염기서열을 결정하고 한우의 염기변이 다형성을 분석하기 위하여 mt DNA의 D-loop 영역내 404번부터 15061까지 1142bp 크기의 염기서열 부위를 특이적인 primer를 이용하여 PCR로 증폭하였다. 한우의 mt DNA내 D-loop 영역에서 단일염기의 치환 및 삽입에 의해 총 24개의 polymorphic site가 확인되었다. 한우 mt DNA D-loop 영역 가운데 16042~16122번째에 위치하고 있는 영역의 염기치환율이 다른 염기서열 영역에 비하여 약 50%를 점유하고 있었으며 이들 polymorphic site에서 16055, 16230 및 16260 번의 염기치환은 한우에서만 검출된 새로운 염기변이로 확인되었다. 따라서, 한우 D-loop 영역내 특이적인 염기변이는 모계 및 세포질 DNA marker로서 한우품종을 특정하는데 활용할 수 있는 가능성을 시사하였다. Polymorphic site의 출현빈도는 169번째 염기가 81.3%로 가장 출현율이 높았고 다음으로 16302번과 16093번째는 56.3% 그리고 16042번와 16119번째 염기가 각각 50.0%와 43.8%의 치환율을 보였으며 나머지 14개 염기는 6.3%에서 25.0% 수준의 출현율을 나타냈다. 한우와 타 품종간의 유전적 근연관계를 추정한 결과 Bos taurus 계통의 유럽종과 유전적 유사도가 높은 것으로 추정되었고, Africa와 India의 Bos indicus 계통의 품종과는 상대적으로 근연관계가 먼 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구에서 검출한 mt DNA내 D-loop 영역의 염기서열 다형성은 한우집단의 유전적 변이성 추정과 모계유전 분석 및 나아가 경제적으로 중요한 형질들과의 연관성 분석에 유용하게 활용할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

Effects of Ensiled Cassava Tops on Rumen Environment Parameters, Thyroid Gland Hormones and Liver Enzymes of Cows Fed Urea-treated Fresh Rice Straw

  • Four rumen-cannulated cows (330 kg average weight at 4 years) were used to evaluate the supplement of ensiled cassava tops (ECT) (variety KM 94, 39% DM) on rumen functions, thyroid hormones and liver enzymes. The treatments, arranged in a 4 $\times$4 Latin square design, were ECT at 0, 50, 100 and 150 g CP 100 kg$^{-1}$ body weight (BW), and a basal diet of urea-treated fresh rice straw (UFRS) ad libitum and 1.1 kg dry matter (DM) cassava root meal (CRM) in each 30 day study period. The results showed a continuous decrease in dry matter intake (DMI) of UFRS with increasing level of ECT supplement (p<0.001). The highest total DMI was observed for treatment ECT$_{150}$ (2.68 kg DM 100 kg$^{-1}$ BW day$^{-1}$) followed by treatments ECT$_{100}$, ECT$_{50}$ and ECT$_{0}$, with 2.47, 2.24 and 2.06 kg DM 100 kg$^{-1}$ BW⋅day$^{-1}$, respectively. Increasing levels of ECT supplement increased the concentration of total volatile fatty acids (p<0.05) and ammonia nitrogen (p<0.05) and resulted in a decrease in pH (p<0.05). Overall average plasma triiodothyronine and thyroxine concentrations were 0.80, 0.82, 0.85 and 0.69 ng ml$^{-1}$ (p>0.05), and 50.9, 49.5, 50.7 and 42.4 ng ml-1 (p>0.05) for treatments ECT$_{0}$, ECT$_{50}$, ECT$_{100}$ and ECT$_{150}$, respectively. There were non-significant differences in alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase among treatments. It is concluded that ECT is a valuable protein-rich feed supplement to cattle, and the highest level of on average 2.48 kg DM ECT per cow and day (28% of total DMI) did not significantly affect thyroid gland hormones and liver enzymes in cows.
