  • The interaction of dichlorophenol isomers with the micellar system of TTAB (tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide) was studied by the UV/Vis spectrophotometric method. The solubilization constants ($K_s$) of dichlorophenol isomers into the micellar system have been measured with the change of temperature and the various thermodynamic parameters have been calculated and analyzed from these changes. The results show that the values of ${\Delta}G^{\circ}_s$ and ${\Delta}H^{\circ}_s$ are all negative within the measured temperature range. The effects of additives (n-butanol and NaCl) on the solubilization of dichlorophenol isomers have been also measured. There was a great change on the values of $K_s$ and CMC simultaneously with these additives. From these changes we can postulate the solubilization sites of each isomers in the micellar system of TTAB.

  • In the present work, the interaction of lipid-based zwitterionic surfactant CDP-W with the vesicle membrane of phospholipids was investigated. For this purpose, interfacial properties such as critical micelle concentration (CMC) and surface tension were measured for the zwitterionic surfactant CDP-W and lecithin S100-3. The zeta potential of 1 wt% aqueous surfactant solutions was also measured as a function of pH to determine the iso-electric point of CDP-W surfactant, where the characteristic of CDP-W surfactant changes from a cationic surfactant to an anionic surfactant. Based on the iso-electric point measurement of CDP-W surfactant, the effects of pH change and CDP-W addition on the stability of S100-3 liposome systems were studied, such as average particle size, polydispersity index (PDI), and zeta potential. The effect of CDP-W on the fluidity characteristics of liposome membranes such as fluorescence anisotropy ratio, deformability, and melting point was investigated at pH 6 where the most stable liposomes were prepared to understand the effect of the fluidity of the liposome membrane on the encapsulation efficiency of active materials and the stability of liposome systems.

  • In this study, the measurement of physical properties of 3 different ethylene oxide adducted zwitterionic surfactants were measured such as critical micelle concentration, surface tension, interfacial tension, contact angle, viscosity and foam stability. Also, the dual function characteristics of the zwitterionic surfactants were investigated by determining an isoelectric point, which were obtained using zeta potential measurement and QCM (quartz crystal microbalance) experiments. The isoelectric point of the synthesized zwitterionic surfactant determined by zeta potential measurement was close to that obtained by QCM experiment and both results have shown almost the same trend as that determined by the frictional property measured using an automated mildness tester. In particular, it has been observed that all three surfactants used during this study provide better softening effect at a pH of neutral condition than at an acidic or an alkaline condition. This result indicates that the synthesized surfactants act as a cationic surfactant at a pH of neutral condition and thus provide good softening effect during a rinsing cycle in the detergency process.

  • A zwitterionic surfactant shows not only detergency but also softening effect since it shows characteristics of a nonionic or an anionic surfactant above an isoelectric point, while showing characteristics of a cationic surfactant below an isoelectric point. Therefore, a zwitterionic surfactant can serve as a dual function surfactant by a single molecule through the interconversion of cleaning and softening effects depending on pH of the aqueous solution. In this study, the dual function characteristics of an amine oxide zwitterionic surfactant were investigated by measuring the zeta potential and the isoelectric point using quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). In addition, the physical properties of an amine oxide surfactant such as critical micelle concentration, surface tension, interfacial tension, contact angle and viscosity were measured and phase behavior study was also performed. The isoelectric point of an amine oxide surfactant determined by zeta potential measurement was near 7.35 and that obtained by QCM experiment was about 7.4, where both results were found to be close to the value reported in the literature.

  • In this study, the measurement of physical properties of ethylene oxide-propylene oxide adducted zwitterionic surfactants were measured such as critical micelle concentration, surface tension, interfacial tension, contact angle, viscosity and foam stability. Also, the dual function characteristics of a zwitterionic surfactant were investigated by determining an isoelectric point, which were obtained using zeta potential measurement and QCM (quartz crystal microbalance) experiments. The isoelectric point of DEP-OSA82-AO zwitterionic surfactant determined by zeta potential measurement was close to that obtained by QCM experiment and both results have shown almost the same trend as that determined by the frictional property measured using an automated mildness tester. In particular, it has been observed that DEP32-OSA82-AO and DEP34-OSA82-AO surfactants provide better softening effect at a pH of acidic or neutral condition than at an alkaline condition. This result indicates that both surfactants act as a cationic surfactant at a pH of acidic or neutral condition and thus provide good softening effect during a rinsing cycle in the detergency process.
