It is well known that the membrane separation process combined with surfactant micelle (micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration) or polyelectrolyte (polyelectrolyte-enhanced ultrafiltration) can remove heavy metals effectively. However, the environmental hazard of surfactant or polyelectrolyte remained in effluent is a serious disadvantage of these methods. In this study, humic substances (HS) were used as complexing agents for metal removal instead of synthetic chemicals. The HS are a sort of natural organic matters which are biodegradable and abundant in natural environment. And the functional groups such as carboxyl groups and phenols in HS can bind with the cationic radionuclides and form complexes. Therefore separation process using them will be more environmental-friendly. The effects of concentration of HS and pH on the removal of cobalt were investigated. The ultrafiltration process was applied to the separation of the cobalt - HS complexes from the aqueous stream. At the concentration of > 3 g/L of HS and pH of 6, over 95 % of cobalt was removed by regenerated cellulose membrane of molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) 3,000. As the concentration of HS increased, the removal of cobalt also was improved because of increase in biding sites (functional groups). The cobalt removal increased from 72.5 % to 97.5 % when pH increased from 4 to 8 at the concentration of 3 g/L HS because of increase in HS solubility and cobalt hydroxide precipitation. In the presence of NaCl, the removal efficiency of cobalt decreased.
The hydrolysis of fungicidal N-[1-(benzotriazol-1-yl)benzyl]aniline (BBA) molecule in the presence of cationic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTABr) and anionic sodium laurylsulfate (NaLs) micellar solutions has been studied kinetically. The Micellar catalysis effect shows that the rate is slightly accelerated by the addition of the anionic NaLs at high pH and the binding constant (Ks) is $1.45{\times}10^4M^{-1}$. This result presumably is due to the electrostatic stabilization by the anionic micelle of the developing carbocation in the transition state rather than the hydrophobic character (${\pi}$: 4.93) of (BBA).
The effects of the surfactant type, i.e., CTAB(cationic), SDS(anionic), and GA(polymeric), on the stability of 0.1 vol.% $Al_2O_3$ nanofluids were investigated. The changes in size and zeta potential of nanoparticles in nanofluids with pH, surfactant concentration, and time were experimentally observed. The nanofluids adding CTAB, which ionizes of the same charge with the bare particle surface, was found to have the best stability regardless of the surfactant concentration, whereas those with SDS became unstable under low surfactant concentration conditions, i.e. lower than the critical micellel concentration(CMC), before the charge reversal occurred. With higher SDS concentration over CMC, they became stable. Gum Arabic, which had been used often to stabilize the nanofluids, was also tested. In result, it was found that the type and concentration of surfactants to add should be selected considering pH and the sign of the bare particle surface charge.

The solubilization constant (Ks) was determined by the UV-Vis method to investigate the interaction between organic matter (solubilized substance) and surfactant in solubilization. Solubilization constants and thermodynamic functions, according to the hydrophobic interaction between organic mater (4-alkylanilines with different alkyl substituent length) and cationic surfactants (DTAB, TTAB, and CTAB, having different hydrophobic lengths), were measured and calculated at various temperatures and compared with each other. As a result, the hydrophobic interactions between organic matters and cationic micelles increased with increasing the chain length of solute's substituent as well as surfactant's hydrophobe. However, the hydrophobic effect by the alkyl substituent of organic matter was greater than the hydrophobic effect by the surfactant. In addition, the results of the calculated thermodynamic functions showed that 4-alkylaniline was solubilized at the deep place in the micelle and its solubilization was greatly dependent on both the hydrophobic effects of organic matter and surfactant. At the calculated iso-structural temperature, the difference between the maximum and minimum values was less than 1K within the experimental conditions.
The critical micelle concentrations($CMC^*$) of the mixed surfactant systems of cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium chloride(CPC) and nonionic surfactant Triton X-100(TX-100) in aqueous solutions of salts(KCl and $Na_2CO_3$) and isomeric butanols(tert-butanol, iso-butanol and n-butanol) were determined by UV spectroscopy method. The various thermodynamic values in aqueous solutions of salts and isomeric butanols were compared with the values in pure water, calculated by means of the equation derived from the pseudo-phase separation model. Thermodynamic parameters($X_1$, $\beta$, ${\gamma}i$, $ai^M$, $C_i$ and ${\Delta}H_{mix}$) were found to have great effects of salts and isomeric butanols on the mixed micellization of CPC/TX-100 mixtures, and also in good agreements with the nonideal mixed micelle model. They showed all negative deviations from the ideal mixed micellar behavior.
In this study, zwitterionic surfactants were added to liposome systems at different pH conditions to understand the effect of surfactants on liposome characteristics. For this purpose, amine oxide surfactants having different hydrocarbon chain lengths were synthesized and the structure of the resulting product was elucidated by using $^1H$ NMR, $^{13}C$ NMR, and FT-IR. In addition, the physical properties of newly synthesized surfactants such as critical micelle concentration (CMC), surface tension and isoelectric point were measured. The stability characteristics of liposome systems including average particle sizes and zeta potentials were measured by varying pH and hydrocarbon chain lengths of an amine oxide surfactant. Effects of the pH and hydrocarbon chain length of an amine oxide surfactant on fluidity of a liposome membrane were also examined by measuring the deformability and the binding degree between the surfactant and liposome.

The interactions of 4-chlorobenzoic acid with the micellar system of various cationic, nonionic, and mixed surfactant systems were studied by the UV/Vis spectrophotometric method. The solubilization constants ($K_s$) of 4-chlorobenzoic acid into those micellar systems have been measured at various temperatures and various thermodynamic parameters for the solubilization of 4-chlorobenzoic acid have been calculated and analyzed from those changes. The results show that the values of ${\Delta}G^o_s$ are all negative within the measured temperature range and that the values of ${\Delta}H^o_s$ and ${\Delta}S^o_s$ are all positive. The effects of alkyl-group's length of surfactant molecules on the solubilization of 4-chlorobenzoic acid have been also measured. The values of $K_s$ were dependent simultaneously on the alkyl-group's length and the kind of head-group in surfactant molecules. From these changes we can postulate the solubilization site and the degree of interaction of 4-chlorobenzoic acid with the micellar systems.
The critical micelle concentration $(CMC^{\ast})$ and the counterion binding constant (B) in a micellar state of the mixed surfactant systems of dodecylpyridinium chloride (DPC) with dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB), tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB), and cetyldimethylethylammonium bromide (CDEAB) were determined at $25^{\circ}C$ as a function of ${\alpha}_1$ (the overall molc fraction of DPC) by the use of electric conductivity method. Various thermodynamic parameters $(X_{i},\;{\gamma}_{I},\;C_{i},\;a^{M}_{i}, \beta,\;{\Delta}H_{mix}, \;and\; {\Delta}G^{o}_{m})$ for the micellization of DPC/DTAB, DPC/TTAB, and DPC/CDEAB mixtures were calculated and analyzed for each system by means of the equations derived from the pseudophase separation model. The results show that the DPC/DTAB mixed system has the greatest deviation and the DPC/CDEAB mixed system has the smallest deviation from the ideal mixed micellar model.
The solubilization of p-chlorobenzoic acid in aqueous solutions of pure cationic, nonionic, amphoteric, and their mixed surfactant systems have been measured by the UV-Vis spectrophotometric method. The effects of hydrophobic tail-group with different chain length and the hydrophilic head-group on the solubilization of p-chlorobenzoic acid have been studied and also thermodynamic parameters have been calculated from the dependence of Ks values on the temperature. The results show that the values of ΔGo for the solubilization by all surfactant systems are negative and the values of ΔHo and ΔSo are all positive.
The surfactants applied in household detergents and industrial cleansers should satisfy the requirement of not just the basic function such as emulsification, solubilisation, dispersion, detergency, wetting and foaming, but also the economical efficiency and the safety to human and environment. In the viewpoint of the sustainable development, the surfactants, moreover, have to reduce raw materials and energy consumption and waste disposal when they are being manufactured and also consumed for their purposes. New high-performance surfactants have been extensively studied and developed in order to respond the change in social and economical environment. Noticeable progresses have been achieved so far, which are the significant increase in solubility and surface activity through the minor modification of existing surfactant molecular structure and the synergistic increase in a surface activity shown in the mixed surfactant system of anionic and cationic surfactants. In this review, the important and meaningful progresses achieved recently in technological advance and practical application will be summarized and discussed.
