Determination of several cationic surfactants in cosmetics has been investigated. Reverse phase ion pair chromatography was used to identify and quantitate cationic surfactants. Cationic surfactants analyzed in this experiment were cetylpyridium chloride, stearyltrimetylammonium chloride, bezalkonium chloride, benzyldicethylcetylammonium chloride, and bihenyltrimethyl ammonium chloride. The separation was achieved on a reverse phase coumn with 10mM HCl-acetonitrile eluent. In this condition, the most of cationic surfactants with exception of CPC and CTAC respectively with suppressed conductivity detector and UV detector connected in series. The calibration curves obtained by plotting the peak areas of the cationic surfactants were linear at levels ranging from 0.005 to 0.1% correlation coefficient, r=0.9988. The detection limits were 1 to 5ppm in sample solution. The average recoveries of cationic surfactants added to hair treatment cream and hair rinse in three to five experiments were 96.7 105.2% and relative standard deviations were 1.1-3.8%. The case that there were CPC and CTAC in same solution was also tested. CPC and CTAC which couldn't be separated on reverse phase column were quantitated with suppressed conductivity detector and UV detector connected in series. Recovery of CPC and CTAC were 101.6 and 89.2% respectively. The proposed method was applied to the determination of cationic surfactants in commercial hair treatment cream.

Sulfonated fluorinated block copolymers having diphenyl units were mixed with the sulfonated cationic conductive polymers at an optimum mixing ratio to form hybrid membranes for fuel cells and their characteristics were studied. 2D and 3D AFM topology analysis confirmed that the number of hydrophilic units in the hybrid membrane was improved. Through the FE-SEM, the microstructure of the hybrid membrane implied hydrogen bonding and pi-pi interactions, and EDAX confirmed carbon, oxygen, sulfur, and fluorine. The thermogravimetric analysis showed that the hybrid membrane was thermally stable and the hydrophilicity of the hybrid membrane was increased by the contact angle of water droplets. As a result, it was confirmed that the cation conductivity increased by a factor of 1.8 times as the number of acidic domains in the hybrid film increased.
Due to the formation of random three dimensional network structure, which cause a lot of scattering of phonons, the thermal conductivity is low when the liquid crystalline epoxy is cured with amine-based curing agent. This problem is solved by using a cationic initiator that can make mesogen groups to be stacked structure. In this experiment, the thermal stability is compared by investigating the activation energy of isothermal decomposition through TGA of an epoxy using an amine-based curing agent and a cationic initiator. As a result, the energy of the activation of the epoxy using a cationic initiator is high. Compared with the previous experiments, the thermal stability is similar to the thermal conductivity.

Effect of cationic starches and anionic colloidal silica on retention and drainage characteristics of Compozil system was investigated. Depending upon the degree of substitution and molecular weight of cationic starches and morphological characteristics of anionic colloidal silica, retention and drainage properties of Compozil system were significantly influenced. When cationic starch addition level increased above a certain limit retention and stock freeness were decreased. To elucidate this an electrostatic coagulation mechanism occurring between unadsorbed starch molecules and anionic colloidal silica was proposed. Unstructured colloidal silica showed greater improvement in retention than structured colloidal silica. Cationic corn starches with different degree of substitution and molecular weights were prepared and their effect as a constituent of Compozil system was also evaluated. By controlling the molecular weight and degree of substitution of cationic corn starch it was possible to achieve significant improvement in fines retention. Cationic corn starch with higher degree of substitution maintained its retention efficiency even when the stock conductivity was increased. Turbidity measurement technique was found to be a simple and useful method to measure the retention characteristics.

The influence of simple electrolyte or anionic trashes on cationic starch adsorption was examined using deinked pulp and bleached thermomechniical pulp. Adsorbed amounts of cationic starches increased slightly , then decreased abruptly as the concentration of simple electrolyte increased. This phenomenon was discussed based on the compression of electrical double layer and conformation change of starch molecules. Also, the effect of the type of simple electrolytes on starch adsorption was examined and discussed. Addition of sodium slilicate increased starch adsorption since it increased surface charge density of fibers. On the other hand, addition of kraft lignin decreased cationic demand of the pulp slurries and adsorbed amounts of cationic starches. Nonionic surfactant did not show any significant effect on the cationic demand of pulp slurries. When simple electrolytes were added to the stock , grater adsorption or cationic starches was obtained with starches of lower degree of substitution . On t도 other hand, amount of adsorbed starches decreased for lower DS starches when the concentration of anionic trashes increased.

Papermaking technology has drastically improved over the last 20 years to face new challenges. Because environmental regulations have become increasingly strict, papermaking systems have had to accommodate elevated recycled pulp content and an increased use of recycled process water. Process water in papermaking systems has become more dirtier and reduced polymer efficiency. Amphoteric PAM demonstrated a higher degree of stability in a high conductivity environment compared to cationic PAM. This was illustrated by the improved retention performance, particularly the ash retention. This amphoteric polymer can be used for board or newsprint production using recycled pulp, especially for the systems where polymer dissolving water is high in conductivity and degradation of cationic functional groups of cationic PAM can occur.

To evaluate the efficiency of various cationic starches in improving retention drainage and strength properties of newsprints which are being made using extensive amount of domestic recycled wastepapers in a highly closed papermaking system diverse cationic starches have been prepared and tested. In the case of cationic starches with low charge density as the degree of substitution increas-es fines retention increased. Results also showed that the retention efficiency decreased sub-stantially for cationic starches with low DS when the conductivity of white water inceased. Tensile strength increased with the addition of cationic starches and then decreased. On the other hand internal bonding strength increased linearly with the addition of cationic starch. Oxidizing treatment of cationic starch was detrimental for retention and freeness improve-ment. Also crosslinking treatment of wet processed cationic starches made cationic starches less effective in retention and drainage.

Crosslinked corn starches were prepared to increase their molecular weights and their performance as a component of Compozil system was evaluated and compared with that of potato starches. It was shown that greater improvements in retention and strength properties could be achieved when crosslinded cationic corn starches rather than conventional cationic potato starches were used especially at high conductivity because of their molecular rigidity.
This research was conducted to analyze the change of surface tension, viscosity, streaming current and conductivity of transformer oil when it were injected with the interface active substances.(anionic:S-111, cationic:S-121, amphoteric:S-131) The changes properties of the surface tension and viscosity of the oil which were injected with the interface active substances were divided into the changes area and the minimum reduction area. The surface tension and viscosity of the oil which were injected with three different kinds of interface active substances showed remarkable change at the point where the concentration of the substance in anionic, in cationic and in amphoteric were 100[ppm], 10[ppm] and 1[ppm] respectively. The streaming current and conductivity of the same sample oil were also changed at the same densities of the surface tension and viscosity. For this factor, it was possibile for us to interpret the mechanism of the streaming current and conductivity. Therefore the interface active substances of the three kinds were injected into the oil within the limit of optimal volume, prevention effects of electrification were showed more excellence than unmixed insulating oil.

Effectiveness of the microparticle retention systems in improving drainage, retention, formation has been recognized for many years. In this study the effectiveness of crosslinked cationic corn starches and silica-based microgels as components of Compozil system has been evaluated. It was shown that improvements in retention and strength could be achieved by employing crosslinked cationic corn starches especially at high conductivity. Silica-based microgels with better performance in retention and drainage than a commercial colloidal silica sol have been made through a reaction of sulfuric acid and sodium silicate solutions.
