  • Ab initio periodic Hartree-Fock calculations with the full potential and minimum basis set are applied to interpretation of scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and atomic force microscope (AFM) images on 1TVTe2. Our results show that the simulated STM image shows asymmetry while the simulated AFM image shows the circular electron densities at the bright spots without asymmetry of electron density to agree with the experimental AFM image. The bright spots of both the STM and AFM images of VTe2 are associated with the surface Te atoms, while the patterns of bright spots of STM and AFM images are different.

  • The interaction of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with cationic dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (DTAB) micelle was studied with electron spin resonance (ESR) by determining line widths of ESR spectra and coupling constant of nitrogen(AN). The degree of ESR line shape change such as line widths and coupling constant indicated that PEG mixes well with DTAB micelle due to a great hydrophobic interaction with surfactant alkyl chains. This suggests that the PEG can be used as non-ionic surfactant to disperse the exposed oil in the ocean.

  • The transformation of the liquid crystal complex made by binding of anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), into high charge density cationic polymer, the homopolymer of diallyldimethylammonium chloride (PDADMAC) was induced by adding of nonionic surfactants and investigated by means of microscopy and FE.SEM. Among nonionic surfactants in this experiments polyethylene glycol (3 mol) ether of lauryl alcohol (laureth-3) made variation in the complex. The laureth-3 transformed the complex into spherulite vesicle with the size of ca.$100{\mu}m$. This change increased the viscosity and the turbidity of the solution phase separated originally. Microscope showed that they are spherulite particles and polarized microscope suggested they are multi.lamellar liquid crystals. FE-SEM also proved that explicitly.

  • Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), an anionic surfactant, can strongly adsorb at the surface of a carbon paste electrode (CPE) via the hydrophobic interaction. In pH 3.0 $Na_2HPO_4$-citric acid buffer (Mcllvaine buffer) and in the presence of SDS, the cationic indole-3-acetic acid (IAA, $pK_a$ = 4.75) was highly accumulated at the CPE surface through the electrostatic interaction between the negative-charged head group of SDS and cationic IAA, compared with that in the absence of SDS. Hence, the oxidation peak current of IAA increases greatly and the oxidation peak potential shifts towards more negative direction. The experimental parameters, such as pH, varieties of surfactants, concentration of SDS, and scan rate were optimized for IAA determination. The oxidation peak current is proportional to the concentration of IAA over the range from $5\;{\times}\;10^{-8}$ mol/L to $2\;{\times}\;10^{-6}$ mol/L. The detection limit is $2\;{\times}\;10^{-8}$ mol/L after 3 min of accumulation. This new voltammetric method was successfully used to detect IAA in some plant leaves.

  • The electrospinning process is a fascinating method to fabricate small nanosized fibers of diameter several hundred nanometers. Surfactant-polymer solutions were prepared by adding poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH) to distilled water with cationic, anionic, amphoteric, and non-ionic surfactants. Average diameter of the electrospun PVOH fibers prepared from PVOH solution was over 300 nm, and was decreased to 150 nm for the mixture of PVOH/amphoteric surfactant. To explain the formation of ultra fine fiber, the characteristic properties in a mixture of PVOH/surfactant such as surface tension, viscosity, and conductivity were determined. In this paper, the effect of interactions between polymers with different classes of surfactants on the morphological and mechanical properties of electrospun PVOH nonwoven mats was broadly investigated.

  • Cationic lipids have been used as one of the major components for making most promising non-viral gene delivery systems. whereas sodium cholate. an edge activator has been used as a surfactant in making ultradeformable and ultraflexible liposomes called Transfersomes. Using both a cationic lipid, DOTAP and sodium cholate. a newly formulated ultradeformable cationic liposome has been prepared. The average particle size of this formulation was approximately 80nm. • The adsorption characteristics of cationic starches and starch-oligomers were investigated using the quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D). The adsorbed amount of modified starches was higher than that of cationic surfactants such as $C_{12{\sim}16}$ trimethylammonium bromide. Cationic starches did not show the tendency depending on the degree of cationic substitution and molecular weight. On the other hand, the softness of the adsorption layer increased with the molecular weight of cationic starches in a viscoelasticity terms. During the adsorption/desorption steps, the amount of adsorbed cationic surfactants was 4~9 times. On the other hand, the difference in the amount of adsorption of all the $C_1$ grafted cationic starches was just 0~50%. In addition, the rigidity of the adsorption layer of cationic surfactant in the desorption step decreased, while, that of cationic starches increased at the same condition.
