제주도 천주교 공소 건축에 관한 연구 (A study on the Secondary Stations of Catholic Church in Jeju)

  • The main purpose of this study is to understand the existing and the architectural characteristics of the Secondary Stations of Catholic Church in Jeju. The method of this study is to research all the literature and to visit. The time of establishment of the Secondary Stations of Catholic Church in Jeju was mostly 1950's, and that time was the heyday of the Secondary Stations of Catholic Church that was built in Korean. Catholicism was spread throughout Jeju during this time, and in the process, the Secondary Stations of Catholic Church was built. The Secondary Stations of Catholic Church in Jeju are sited mostly in coastal villages, and especially Catholicism was actively spread throughout the west of Jeju and the a large number Secondary Stations of Catholic Church were built in the west of Jeju. The Secondary Stations of Catholic Church were built between the mid-1950's to the mid-1960's. The plan type is kept as plan shaped of straight shape. When made an enlargement of the interior space and altered, framework of the Secondary Stations of Catholic Church was generally maintained. The head of the side window and the front door have the same design characteristics. When the belfry is located, it is attached to an outer wall of the Secondary Stations of Catholic Church, or is located to the left or the right the front of the Secondary Stations of Catholic Church. The design of belfry found expression in various forms. The buttress are not located in the others but in Young-su Gong-So, and it has not the structural functions but the design functions.

  • 1784년 한국에서 교회가 설립된 이후, 한국 가톨릭 교회는 박해에도 불구하고 급격하게 성장하였다. 그리고, 현재 가톨릭 교회는 다양한 활동을 수행하며 한국 사회속에서 많은 영향을 미치고 있다. 그러나, 교회의 성장에도 불구하고 교회 기록관리는 행정적인 목적으로만 이루어지고 있다. 따라서, 이 연구는 교구기록관을 중심으로 한국 가톨릭 교회내의 체계적인 기록관리 시스템을 제안해 보고자 한다. 이를 위하여, 첫째 가톨릭 교회 기록의 특성을 분석하였고 이어 인천교구를 사례로 기록관리 실태를 분석하였다. 마지막으로, 기록관리 이론을 적용하여 가톨릭 교회 기록관리 시스템을 제안하였다.

  • Liturgical space is the most important in the spaces of catholic church architecture. But Since 1980's, korea catholic church has concentrated on functionality, decoration and sensuous expression. Thus this study analyzed the catholic liturgical space for reinforcing the present status of catholic church through Pyeongtaek district's parish in Diocese of Suwon. Although there are many compositional elements in catholic liturgical space, this study focused on the figures of church plane, the arrangement of nave's chair, the condition of sanctuary and the place of sacristy etc. Though there are many changes in composition elements of liturgical space by the 2nd Council of the Vatican, composition elements of site(shape, price, access road, area etc.) have an effect on liturgical space, too. But up to now, despite the necessity of the principles of liturgical space which are yet to be lacked.

  • Since the end of 19th century, The form and inner space for the religious ceremony; liturgical space of Catholic churches in Busan diocese have been changed as various styles by several outer and inner factors. The changing of historical, social, and religious environment, such as Opening Harbor, Japanese Occupation, Korean War & Rehabilitation Period, and Vatican II are generally regarded as main outer factors, and the locality that lay behind the flux of those events is considered as the main inner factor. The former has usually operated as a momentum for showing general trend of Catholic church, while the latter has made local singularity expressed as unusual style and somewhat modified liturgical space compared with Its contemporary churches. In the context, this paper attempt to analyze the transformation process of style and liturgical space of Catholic churches in Busan diocese focused on revealing local singularity with main five churches, Bumil Church, Samrangjin Church, Milyang Church, Jungang Church, and Dongrae Church, constructed between the end of 19th century and 1962.

  • The core idea of the critical regionalism could be summarized as a self-conscious synthesis between universal civilization and world culture. After World War II, it has been applied to architecture for overcoming the problem of Industrial Capitalism and uniformity of 20th century Modern Architecture. Naturally, religious architecture cannot also be an exception in this cultural trend, thus we can also apply the critical regionalism to the Korean Catholic Church Architecture with the basic premise that the Traditional Western and Modern Style Church Architecture should be regarded as universal civilization, and the Traditional Korean Architecture and endemicity as one of world culture. In the context, this article attempts to analyze the regionality of Korean Modern Catholic Church Architecture constructed between the 19th century and 1980's, and how it has been differently transformed with the view of the critical regionalism. Its analysis will be carried out within three types; transformation of the Traditional Korean Architecture and the influence of Japanese Modern Architecture, representation of the Traditional Korean Architecture, and abstraction of the Traditional Korean Architecture with each advantages and disadvantages.

  • This Study is concerned with the architectural problems particular to the design of the sanctuary in Catholic churches. The paper is meant to address two distinct groups - clerics and architects. Architects do not tend to think the church buildings theologically or liturgically, and priests, though they are often trained in the arts, do not tend to look at buildings the same way architects do. Hence, my goal is to adequately address the concerns of each in a language the other will understand, thereby building a bridge of communication between the two groups. The two main concerns of the study are to provide guidelines and reflection lot liturgically correct buildings, and to re-establish the traditions of church buildings. I discuss the idea of the sanctuary in the Catholic church,(in chapter 2) and examine each of the main furnishings of the sanctuary with regard to history, liturgical use, symbolism and related pastoral concerns.(in chapter 3,4).

20세기 현대교회건축 운동에 관한 비교 연구 - 독일의 전례운동과 프랑스의 성미술운동을 중심으로 - (A Comparative Study on the Modern Architectural Movement in Catholic Church - Focused on the 'Riturgical Movement' and 'L' art $Sacr\'{e}$ Movement' in Europe in the first half of 20th century -)

  • The Purpose of this Study is to find the Modern Movements which had done important roles on the development of modern church architecture and sacred art in the first half of 20th century. I had investigated the background and process of the movements, and analyzed the buildings which represented the movements. And I compared the architectural fruits of 'Riturgical Movement' and 'L' art $Sacr\'{e}$ Movement. The results are summarized as follows : First, there are two important movements in Catholic church in the backgrounds of the innovative changes of modern church architecture, Those are 'Riturgical Movement' which pursuits to establish a closer relation between clergy and congregation, and to make the positive participants in the service not mere observers and 'L' art $Sacr\'{e}$ Movement' which pursuits to accept modern secular art into church. Second, both movements had been developed on the bases of the theological studies with tow monasteries - Benedictine Order and Dominican Order - as leader. And the main concept was a kind of revival movement which recovers the Christian tradition. Third, The two movements began from the different themes and in the different regions. But they exerted influences each other, and achieved successful fruits in the Catholic churches of England and Swiss in 1960'. Fourth, 'Riturigical reformation' and 'Acceptance of modern art' had been officialized and generalized through the second Vatican Council(1962-1965).

Wilde the "Pervert": Oscar and Transnational (Roman Catholic) Religion

  • In late Victorian England, a "pervert" meant two things. One meaning designated a person who "turned" or converted from one sect of Christianity to another. In Wilde's time this referred specifically to converts from the established state Church of England to the transnational Roman Catholic Church. The other, newer meaning designated someone who turned from conventional heterosexual relations to a (as yet unnamed) homosexual orientation. In the context of the late Victorian empire, both were considered dangerous. The rising social and political influence of Roman Catholicism appeared threatening as a transnational Church invading a national one. For the Anglican Church of England, this crisis was played out what came to be known as the Oxford Movement, still influential during Wilde's time as a student there from 1874 to 1878. What is interesting in Wilde's life, as in his work, is the way he himself played with the dangerous transgressions inherent in being a "pervert." Sexually, he was converted to same-sex love while still a married man. In terms of religion, he remained fascinated with Catholicism, allegedly converting on his death-bed. But what is provocative is way that Wilde used one "perversion" to play into another: so that in such works as The Picture of Dorian Gray and Salome, his version of a kind of anti-Catholic Catholicism becomes a site of sexual desire, and sexual desire expression for that kind of spirituality, which, as unrequited longing, can ultimately n find no object adequate to its imagination.

칸토어와 로마 가톨릭 교회 (Georg Cantor and Roman Catholic Church)

  • The interdisciplinary study explores the discussion of actual infinity between Georg Cantor and Roman Catholic Church. Regarding the actual infinity, we first trace the theological background of Cantor by interpreting his correspondence and major works including ${\ddot{U}}ber$ die verschiedenen Standpunkte in bezug auf das aktuelle Unendliche(1885) and Mitteilungen zur Lehre vom Transfiniten (1887), and then investigate his argumentation for two points at issue: (1) pantheism and (2) inconsistency of the necessity with freedom of God. In terms of mathematics and theology, Cantor defined the actual infinity(aphorismenon) as characterized by (1) the transfinite infinity(Transfinitum) and (2) the absolute infinity(Absolutum). Transfinitum is conceptualized here in mathematical terms as a multipliable actual infinity, whereas Absolutum is not as a multipliable actual infinity. The results imply that Cantor's own concept of Transfinitum and Absolutum is adequate for Roman Catholic theology as well as mathematics including the reflection principle.

  • This study aims at searching the Church Building Type and Design Sources of a German church architect who had designed many churches and other buildings in Korea. P. Alwin Schmid(1904-1978) had designed 188 Catholic buildings in Korea for 20 years from 1958 to 1978. In his works there are many excellent Catholic ritual buildings. It was caused by his conviction on the theology and the principles of Church Architecture. And His remarkable achievement is affected by the works of Dominikus Bom(1880-1955) and Rudolf Schwarz(1897-1961). Alwin's 5 plan type is relevant to Schwarz' iconographic model, and their approach to 'light' is much the same. But the Character of inner space is the middle of Dominikus Bom and Rudolf Schwarz. His works rotted in the Liturgical Movement had been developed in the line of connection with 20th German church architecture. The works of Dominikus Bom and Rudolf Schwarz played the role of the teacher of Alwin Schwarz.
