  • Thermal batteries are reserve batteries with molten salts as an electrolyte, which activates at high temperature. Due to their excellent reliability, long shelf life, and mechanical robustness, thermal batteries are used in military applications. A high-performance cathode for thermal batteries should be considered in terms of its high capacity, high voltage, and high thermal stability. Research progress on cathode materials from the recent decade is reviewed in this article. The major directions of research were surface modification, compounding of existing materials, fabrication of thin film cathode, and development of new materials. In order to develop a high-performance cathode, a proper combination of these research directions is required while considering mass production and cost.

  • High performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have attracted considerable attention as essential energy sources for high-technology electrical devices such as electrical vehicles, unmanned drones, uninterruptible power supply, and artificial intelligence robots because of their high energy density (150-250 Wh/kg), long lifetime (> 500 cycles), low toxicity, and low memory effects. Of the high-performance LIB components, cathode materials have a significant effect on the capacity, lifetime, energy density, power density, and operating conditions of high-performance LIBs. This is because cathode materials have limitations with respect to a lower specific capacity and cycling stability as compared to anode materials. In addition, cathode materials present difficulties when used with LIBs in electric vehicles because of their poor rate performance. Therefore, this study summarizes the structural and electrochemical properties of cathode materials for LIBs used in electric vehicles. In addition, we consider unique strategies to improve their structural and electrochemical properties.

  • Lithiated transition metal oxides such as LiMn2O4, Lil-xMnO$_2$, LiNiO$_2$, LiCoO$_2$, and their solid solution phases are used as cathode materials for lithium rechargeable batteries. We prepared the cathode materials using a novel eutectic self-mixing method without any artificial mixing procedures. This method provides an extraordinarily simple way to make the cathode materials, and it is possible to prepare at very low temperature such as 25$0^{\circ}C$. Furthermore, the cathode materials produced have discharge capacities that are much better than cathode materials prepared by previously reported synthetic methods. The spontaneous and homogeneous mixing is verified by $^{7}$ Li magic-angle-spinning (MAS) NMR spectroscopy.

  • Due to high ionic conductivity and favorable oxygen electrocatalysis, doped $Bi_2O_3$ systems are promising candidates as solid oxide fuel cell cathode materials. Recently, several researchers reported reasonably low cathode polarization resistance by adding electronically conducting materials such as (La,Sr)$MnO_3$ (LSM) or Ag to doped $Bi_2O_3$ compositions. Despite extensive research efforts toward maximizing cathode performance, however, the inherent catalytic activity and electrochemical reaction pathways of these promising materials remain largely unknown. Here, we prepare a symmetrical structure with identically sized $Y_{0.5}Bi_{1.5}O_3$/LSM composite electrodes on both sides of a YSZ electrolyte substrate. AC impedance spectroscopy (ACIS) measurements of electrochemical cells with varied cathode compositions reveal the important role of bismuth oxide phase for oxygen electrocatalysis. These observations aid in directing future research into the reaction pathways and the site-specific electrocatalytic activity as well as giving improved guidance for optimizing SOFC cathode structures with doped $Bi_2O_3$ compositions.

  • This paper describes an environmentally friendly process for the recovery of $LiFePO_4$ cathode materials from scrap electrodes by a simple thermal treatment method. The active materials were easily separated from the aluminum substrate foil and polymeric binders were also decomposed at different temperatures ($400^{\circ}C$, $500^{\circ}C$, $600^{\circ}C$) for 30 min under nitrogen gas flow. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The electrochemical properties of the recycled $LiFePO_4$ cathode were evaluated by galvanostatic charge and discharge modes. The specific charge/discharge capacities of the recycled $LiFePO_4$ cathode were similar to those of the original $LiFePO_4$ cathode. The $LiFePO_4$ cathode material recovered at $500^{\circ}C$ exhibits a somewhat higher capacity than those of other recovered materials at high current rates. The recycled $LiFePO_4$ cathode also showed a good cycling performance.

  • Our work on $Sc_2O_3-W$ matrix dispenser cathodes had been reviewed in this paper. The cathode with uniform distribution of $Sc_2O_3$ had been obtained using liquid-liquid doping method. The cathode had excellent emission property, i.e., the emission current density in pulse condition could reach over $35A/cm^2$. It was found that the cathode surface was covered by a Ba-Sc-O active substance multilayer with a thickness of about 100 nm, which was different from the monolayer and semiconducting layer in thickness. Furthermore, the observation results displayed that nanoparticles appeared at the growth steps and the surface of tungsten grains of the fully activated cathode. The calculation result indicated that the nanoparticles could cause the increase of local electric field strengths. We proposed the emission model that both the Ba-Sc-O multilayer and the nanoparticles distributing mainly on the growth steps of the W grains contributed to the emission. The future work on this cathode has been discussed.

  • A novel two-step surface treatment was developed and demonstrated for the carbon nanotube (CNT) cathode with highly efficient backlight unit application. An adhesive taping method was applied firstly and then followed by a post-heat treatment for the CNT cathode. During the postheat treatment process, some residues covering the CNTs were burned out. The post-heat treatment enhanced the emission current of the CNT cathode around 20% compared with that of no heat-treated sample.

  • The effect of the application of lanthanum strontrium manganite and yttria-stabilized zirconia (LSM-YSZ) nano-composite fabricated by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) as a cathode of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is studied. A gradient-structure thin-film cathode composed of 1 micron-thick LSM-YSZ deposited at an ambient pressure ($P_{amb}$) of 200 mTorr; 2 micron-thick LSM-YSZ deposited at a $P_{amb}$ of 300 mTorr; and 2 micron-thick lanthanum strontium cobaltite (LSC) current collecting layer was fabricated on an anode-supported SOFC with an ~8 micron-thick YSZ electrolyte. In comparison with a 1 micron-thick nano-structure single-phase LSM cathode fabricated by PLD, it was obviously effective to increase triple phase boundaries (TPB) over the whole thickness of the cathode layer by employing the composite and increasing the physical thickness of the cathode. Both polarization and ohmic resistances of the cell were significantly reduced and the power output of the cell was improved by a factor of 1.6.

  • In this study, we examined the effect of cathode from electrolysis reactor for treating ballast water. We are going to select a suitable cathode for seawater electrolysis after considering the effect on the generation of the oxidant of cathode and the electrode deposition materials adhering to the surface of cathode. Anode is Ru-Ti-Pd electrode and cathode are Ti, Pt, JP520 (Ni-Pt-Ce) electrodes. Using the cathode of the three types, experiments were conducted to examine the effects of TRO (total residual oxidants) generation concentration and RNO (N, N-Dimethyl-4-nitrosoaniline, indicator of the generation of OH radical) degradation concentration (in 1, 35 psu), ohmic drop, FESEM(field emission scanning electron microscope) observation of cathode surface and EDX (energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) measurements of attached fouling material. The results showed that TRO generation concentration and RNO degradation concentration in according to each type of cathode are not different. The attached fouling materials were observed on the surface of Ti and the JP520 electrode by the observation of SEM after electrolysis for two hours, but it was not observed on the surface of Pt electrode. When considering the surface ohmic drop of cathode and the attached fouling materials, Pt electrode was judged as the excellent cathode.
