This study focuses on a determination of amount of Pt in the Pt/C for catalysts of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). PEMFC offer low weight and high power density and being considered for automotive and stationary power applications. The PEMFC performance is influenced by several factors, including catalysts and structure of electrode and membrane type. Catalyst of electrode is important factor for PEMFC. One of the obstacles prevent ing polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells from commercialization is the high cost of noble metals to be used as catalyst, such as platinum To effectively use these metals, they have to be will dispersed to small particles on conductive carbon supports. The optimal amount of Pt in Pt/C for cathode catalyst was investigated by using polarization curves in single cell with $H_2/O_2$ operation.

Ethanolamine (ETA) is mainly used to prevent corrosion of pipe in secondary cooling system of nuclear power plant. Condensed ETA in wastewater could increase COD and T-N when it was emitted to natural water system. Compared to conventional treatments, electrochemical oxidation process using packed bed bipolar electrodes was adopted to treat COD and T-N. According to arrangement of feeder electrode, single packed bed bipolar electrode reactor and multi-paired packed bed bipolar reactor were developed and conventional zero-valent iron (ZVI) was selected as conducting bipolar electrode. Bipolar electrodes were coordinated three-dimensionally in the reactor. The experimental results showed that COD and T-N was little removed in unit system at different pH condition (pH 8 and 11) on 100V. However, in multi-paired system that applied 600V, COD was eliminated 80.85% (anode-cathode-anode, A-C-A) and 85.11% (cathode-anode-cathode, C-A-C), respectively. T-N was also removed 96.88% (A-C-A) and 90.63% (C-A-C), simultaneously. Current efficiency was estimated both single and multi-paired system. At unit bipolar packed bed reactor, current efficiency was almost zero, however in multi-paired system, current efficiency was 300~500% at A-C-A and 250~350% at C-A-C. Current efficiency was over 100% hence it was confirmed that this system is more effective than conventional electrochemical oxidation system.

High-purity waste CNTs were mixed into cement mortar to manufacture heat-generating concrete that can use low voltage power, and carbon fiber and waste cathode materials were also used improve the conductivity of the mortar. The waste CNTs were analyzed to have a high concentration of multi-walled CNTs, and substituted liquid type waste CNTs were used during mortar mixing in order to increase dispersibility. The temperature change of the mortar with CNT was evaluated when using electric power below DC 24 V in order to utilize a small self-generation facility such as small solar power module when the mortar heats up and to minimize electromagnetic waves. When liquid-type waste CNTs were applied and a voltage of DC 24 V was introduced, it rose to 60 ℃ in a 200 × 100 × 50 mm mortar block specimen. The field applicability of self heating mortar with waste CNT was sufficient and also the amount of change in heat energy in mortar with liquid type waste CNT, carbon fiber and waste cathode materials is more effective compared to it of other variables.

The quantity of research on microbial fuel cells has been rapidly increasing. Microbial fuel cells are unique in their ability to utilize microorganisms and to generate electricity from sewage, pig excrement, and other wastewaters which include organic matter. This system can directly produce electrical energy without an inefficient energy conversion step. However, with MFCs maximum power production is limited by several factors such as activation losses, ohmic losses, and mass transfer losses in cathodes. Therefore, electron acceptors such as nitrate and ferric ion in the cathodes were utilized to improve the cathode reaction rate because the cathode reaction is very important for electricity production. When 100 mM nitrate as an electron acceptor was fed into cathodes, the current in single-cathode and dual-cathode MFCs was noted as $3.24{\pm}0.06$ mA and $4.41{\pm}0.08$ mA, respectively. These values were similar to when air-saturated water was fed into the cathodes. One hundred mM nitrate as an electron acceptor in the cathode compartments did not affect an increase in current generation. However, when ferric ion was used as an electron acceptor the current increased by $6.90{\pm}0.36$ mA and $6.67{\pm}0.33$ mA, in the single-cathode and dual-cathode microbial fuel cells, respectively. These values, in single-cathode and dual-cathode microbial fuel cells, represent an increase of 67.1% and 17.6%, respectively. Furthermore, when supplied with ferric ion without air, the current was higher than that of only air-saturated water. In this study, we attempted to reveal an inexpensive and readily available electron acceptor which can replace platinum in cathodes to improve current generation by increasing the cathode reaction rate.

The conventional CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) inverter used in the backlight unit for LCD-TV, composed of the three power stage, can degrade the whole power conversion efficiency. In this paper, a novel scheme to drive the CCFL, composed only of the two power stage without using a dc/dc power stage, is proposed to enhance the whole power conversion efficiency. By adopting the proposed "4-in-1 Transformer", the current balance and the simultaneous ignition among the four CCFL lamp are assured with the one inverter circuit. The proposed scheme features the simple circuit structure, which can save the volume and the cost in the LCD backlight unit. Design considerations are discussed and design procedures are derived. Experimental results of the proposed scheme for 40" LCD-TV are presented to confirm the theoretical analysis.
In order to explore the characteristics of electrons in DC negative corona discharge, an improved plasma chemical model is presented for the simulation of bar-plate DC corona discharge in dry air. The model is based on plasma hydrodynamics and chemical models in which 12 species are considered. In addition, the photoionization and secondary electron emission effect are also incorporated within the model as well. Based on this model, electron mean energy distribution (EMED), electron density distribution (EDD), generation and dissipation rates of electron at 6 typical time points during a pulse are discussed emphatically. The obtained results show that, the maximum of electron mean energy (EME) appears in field ionization layer which moves towards the anode as time progresses, and its value decreases gradually. Within a pulse process, the electron density (ED) in cathode sheath almost keeps 0, and the maximum of ED appears in the outer layer of the cathode sheath. Among all reactions, R1 and R2 are regarded as the main process of electron proliferation, and R22 plays a dominant role in the dissipation process of electron. The obtained results will provide valuable insights to the physical mechanism of negative corona discharge in air.
Optimal preparation guidelines of a cathode catalyst layer by non-precious metal catalysts were evaluated based on electrochemical performance in single-chamber microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Experiments for catalyst loading rate revealed that iron(II) phthalocyanine (FePc) can be a promising alternative, comparable to platinum (Pt) and cobalt tetramethoxyphenylporphyrin (CoTMPP), including effects of substrate concentration. Results showed that using an optimal FePc loading of $1mg/cm^2$ was equivalent to a Pt loading of $0.35mg/cm^2$ on the basis of maximum power density. Given higher loading rates or substrate concentrations, FePc proved to be a better alternative for Pt than CoTMPP. Under the optimal loading rate, it was further revealed that 40 wt% of FePc to carbon support allowed for the best power generation. These results suggest that proper control of the non-precious metal catalyst layer and substrate concentration are highly interrelated, and reveal how those combinations promote the economic power generation of single-chamber MFCs.
An experiment was carried out to compare the suitability in visual tasks between flat and conventional (convex) cathode-ray tube (CRT) displays. The subjects performed visual search tasks during 2-h for detecting target words among distracters presented on the screen. The subjects' visual performance was evaluated with average time and number of errors made to complete the tasks. Visual fatigue after the search tasks was also evaluated in terms of degradations in accommodative power and subjective ratings. Difference was not found in task time between the two displays, but flat CRT showed a lower number of errors than conventional CRT. The difference in number of errors was statistically significant at 0=0.05. Although there was no difference between the displays in degradations of accommodative power, results from the subjective ratings showed that flat CRT yields less fatigue than conventional CRT. The results partially support the hypothesis that panel convexity of CRT displays has a significant effect on the performance and fatigue during visual tasks and thus flat CRT is the better display than conventional one.

Various types of plasma source applied in $CH_4$ decomposition process are compared. DBD by pulse and AC power, spark by pulse and AC power, rotating arc and hollow cathode plasma are chosen to be compared. The results show that $CH_4$ conversion per given unit power is relatively high in hollow cathode plasma and rotating arc that induces rather high temperature condition and that is why both thermal dehydration and plasma induced decomposition contribute for the overall process. In case of DBD wherein high temperature electron and low temperature gas molecule coexist, the process shows low conversion rate, for in rather low temperature condition the contribution of thermal dehydration is lowered. Selectivity of $C_2H_6$ and $C_2H_2$ is shown to be a good parameter of the relative contribution of plasma chemistry in the overall process. From the results we concluded that required condition of plasma source for a cost effective and high yield $CH_4$ decomposition is to have characteristics of both thermal plasma and non thermal plasma in which temperature is high above a certain threshold state for thermal dehydration and electron induced collision is maximized in the same breath.
The present study was conducted to compare the voltage generation in two-chamber microbial fuel cells (MFCs) with a biocathode where nitrate and oxygen are used as a terminal electron acceptors (TEA) and to investigate the nitrogen removal and the electrochemical characteristics depending on the separators of the MFCs for denitrification. The maximum power density in a biocathode MFC using an anion exchange membrane (AEM) was approximately 40% lower with the use of nitrate as a TEA than when using oxygen. The MFC for denitrification using an AEM allows acetate ($CH_3COO^-$) as a substrate and nitrate ($NO_3{^-}$) as a TEA to be transported to the opposite sides of the chamber through the AEM. Therefore, heterotrophic denitrification and electrochemical denitrification occurred simultaneously at the anode and the cathode, resulting in a higher COD and nitrate removal rate and a lower maximum power density. The MFC for the denitrification using a cation exchange membrane (CEM) does not allow the transport of acetate and nitrate. Therefore, as oxidation of organics and electrochemical denitrification occurred at the anode and at the cathode, respectively, the MFC using a CEM showed a higher coulomb efficiency, a lower COD and nitrate removal rate in comparison with the MFC using an AEM.
