  • Test fishing was carried out using six kinds of different mesh sizes (20, 22, 24, 28, 35, 40mm) for springnet-pot to study bycatches according to the mesh size and catches survey was done for another one (mesh size : 22mm, entrance round : 350mm) in Geo-je & Tong-young waters of Korea. On the first sea experiment, it was thought that suitable mesh size of spring-net-pot catching conger-eel over 35cm with decreasing the catches of conger-eel (Conger myriaster) below 35cm was 24mm. On the second sea experiment, commercial catches were crabs (Charybdis bimaculata), octopus minor (Octopus variabilis) and others including conger-eel, and catches proportion was 60% of total catches weights. There was no big difference for the monthly catches. Self-consumption catches were 9 species including conger-eel below 35cm holding 50% of catches in the side of weights. There were 40% of bycatches for the catches weights and 63% for catches numbers in the 22mm mesh size of spring-net-pot having entrance round over 140mm. It showed that 50% of catches weights were discarded.

  • This investigation was carried out to research on the actual states for bycatch and discards of catches caught by funnel net from December, 2007 to June, 2010. Fishing grounds were Manheung-dong and Ocheon-dong in the coastal waters of Yeosu. The number of the investigation was 21 in Manheung-dong and 7 in Ocheon-dong fishing ground. In Manheung-dong, the species of catches were 26 of fish, 6 of cephalopod and 5 of crustacean. In Ocheon-dong, the species of catches were 25 of fish, 6 of cephalopod and 4 of crustacean. In the two all fishing grounds, the largest amount of species was revealed as gray mullet. Among these catches, the number of non marketable species that were classified and discarded ones, were 9 in Manheung-dong and 7 in Ocheon-dong. Also, among the marketable species which were small entity or too tiny catches to commercialize and not fresh ones were discarded. The proportion that they dominate in the whole catches was 37.1% in the number of catches and 5.4% in the weight of catches in Manheung-dong, and 6.9% in the number of catches and 0.3% in the weight of catches in Ocheon-dong. In case of Manheung-dong, the monthly discarding proportion was the highest with 59.4% in the number of catches in may and 17.6% in the weight of catches in November, and in case of Ocheon-dong, the both of them were the highest in February, with 28.0% in the number of catches and 5.1% in the weight of catches.

  • The possible effects of several environmental conditions on the catches of anchovy with a set net located in the water off Samchunpo were observed during the period of June 1∼Sep. 30, 1975. The best catches of anchovy were made when the surface water temperature was 24∼25$^{\circ}C$. If the surface temperature were below 18$^{\circ}C$ or above 26$^{\circ}C$, the catches were significantly smaller. The best catches were observed when the salinity was 28∼30 . If the salinities were below 25 or above 33 , the catches were considerably smaller. Increases in the catches were noticed as the transparency of the water decreased for certain range, and the best catches were made when the transparency was 2.0∼2.4m. The catches of anchovy were appeared to be related to the passage of cyclones, and significantly increased catches were observed 2 days after the passage of a cyclone. Significantly increased catches were also made when the atmospheric pressure was higher than 1,015mb under the influence of a tropical maritime air mass. the catches were found to be related to the tidal differences, and the average catch per day during the spring tide was 47 times as much as that of the neap tide.

  • The effect of the oceanic condition on variations of the catches of Alaska pollack (Theragra chalcogramma) in the East Sea (the Japan Sea) is examined using monthly catches data of this fish and temperature data during 1972 to 1991. Since 1973 the catches of Alaska pollack have gradually increased, showing a peak in 1981, and then rapidly decreased after 1986. A significant negative correlation was found between variations of the catches and the temperature at 50 m depth offshore Mukho. In 1981, the year of the highest catches in the study period, the water mass in the Eastern Korean Coastal Sea of the East Sea was extremely cold, while the year of poor catch, 1979, was much warmer than the annual mean temperature. The results show that the temperature variations around the Eastern Korean Coastal Sea play an important role in the variations of the catches of Alaska pollack, implying that the effect of the Tsushima Warm Current is also very important.

  • Recently, commercial catches of the common squid Todarodes pacificus have dramatically decreased in Korean and Japanese waters. The relationship between common squid catches and environmental factors was investigated using squid catches, climate indices and observed seawater temperatures in Korean waters. Common squid consist of three spawning stocks: autumn, winter, and summer. The autumn stock is the largest in Korea, and its main fishing season appears to have shifted from September in the 1980s to October in the 1990s. We observed negative correlations between the spring Southern Oscillation Index and Korean catches and between the winter Pacific Decadal Oscillation and Japanese catches. Despite global warming, no conspicuous increases in October seawater temperatures have been observed at 10 and 50 m in Korean waters since the mid-1900s. Instead, the 50 m water layer of the East Sea appears to be gradually cooling. Moreover, temperatures at 50 m in the East Sea and the South Sea were significantly negatively correlated with squid catches in Korea and Japan, respectively. Our preliminary analysis indicates a link between climate change, seawater temperature, and squid catches in Korean waters, which helps to inform the direction of subsequent research to identify the cause of rapid decreases in this squid resource.

  • Experimental fishing was carried out to compare and analyze catch characteristics of shrimp beam trawl in a fishing area and a non-fishing area during the period of fishing season and off-fishing season in the coastal waters of Geoje. A commercial fishing boat (4.99 tons) was used for the test fishing. The amount of total catches were 14,654g in the fishing area and 12,359g in the non-fishing area, shrimp catches of non-fishing area were much greater than that of the fishing area during the period of off-fishing season (June and August). However, total catches were 27,670g in the fishing area and 33,004g in the non-fishing area, shrimp catches of fishing area were bigger than that of non-fishing area during the period of fishing season (October and December). On the results of the study, catches characteristics between fishing area and non-fishing area showed the reversed results for the period of fishing season and off-fishing season.

  • This paper described on relation between the catches of tuna and the distribution of water temperature of eastern fishing ground of Tropical region in the Pacific Ocean. The data of catches and water temperature used in this paper were based log book which # 27 CHENG RONG(Gross tonnage : 399 ton) had been worked eastern fishing ground(Lat : 09$^{\circ}$N- 14$^{\circ}$S, Long : 115$^{\circ}$- 149$^{\circ}$W)from January to October, 1991. The obtained result are as follows : 1. On the relation between the catches and the geographical distribution, bigeye tuna was higher catches at Lat 4$^{\circ}$- 9$^{\circ}$N, Long 135$^{\circ}$- 139$^{\circ}$W area in the equatorial counter current region where surface water temperature was range of 27.5$^{\circ}C$ to 27.9$^{\circ}C$, yellowfin tuna was higher catches at Lat 4$^{\circ}$- 9$^{\circ}$S, Long 145$^{\circ}$- 149$^{\circ}$W in the south equatorial current region where surface water temperature was range of 28.$0^{\circ}C$ to 28.4$^{\circ}C$ and albacore tuna was higher catches at Lat 10$^{\circ}$- 14$^{\circ}$S, Long 120$^{\circ}$- 124$^{\circ}$W area in the south equatorial current region where surface temperature was range of 26.5$^{\circ}C$ to 26.9$^{\circ}C$ 2. On the relation between catches and distribution of vertical water temperature, bigeye tuna was higher catches at the water temperature of 1$0^{\circ}C$ to 12$^{\circ}C$ on depth layer between 300m and 360m, yellowfin tuna was higher catches at the water temperature of 15$^{\circ}C$ to 19$^{\circ}C$ on depth layer between 180m and 280m and albacore tuna was higher catches at the water temperature of 12$^{\circ}C$ to 14$^{\circ}C$ on depth layer between 280m and 310m. Above the result, it seemed that bigeye tuna distributed deeper layer than yellowfin and albacore tuna.

  • By means of past data, taken from the annual catches of anchovy landings in Korea, from the year 1926 to 1967, as reported in the Annual Statistical deports of Fisheries, the future annual catches from the year 1968 to 1973 were predicted by statistical extrapolation. The trend C(t) in the 42 year period above was interpreted by the least square method. Also, the ratio of the actual annual catches Ct to this trend C(t) was regarded as a stationary variate and the serial correlation coefficients $r_k$ were calculated. The type of statistical variate model was therefore determined by the correlogram. A periodical analysis, using Whittaker's method, was performed and a harmonic analysis was also performed. According to these calculations the stationary variate at was fixed and the annual catches following the year 1967 were predicted by extrapolation.

  • Specificity of catches has been analyzed to japanese tuna purse seine A principle component analysis was used to improve the efficiency of fishing and increase sustainable production and productivity of Korean tuna purse seine. The result are as follows; From the principal component analysis of the fish catches, the first principal component(Z1) to promote principal component score was skipjack Kastsuwonus Pelamis, LINNAEUS and yellowfin tuna Thunnus Albacares, BONNATERRE (Small : smaller than 10kg) and proportion was 86.8% of total. The second principal component(Z2) to increase principal component score was yellowfin tuna (Large : larger than 10kg) and proportion was 9.5%.On the other hand, fish operating that have caught skipjack and yellowfin tuna (Small and Larger) was not so much. Fish catches for one species raised volume of the catches while catches for multi-species decreased it since principal composition score for one species and both species together has been increased.Fish school could be divided into three groups of schools each of which was associated with drift objects, payaho and ship, school associated with shark, whale and porpoise and school of breezing, feeding and jumping from proportion of principal component analysis for fish catches of school types. However, the biological pattern is different among school associated with ship, payaho and school associated with drift objects for analysis eigen vector. School associated with ship, payaho and school associated with drifting object associated is judged as school which be assembled to vessel and drifted log temporary.

  • Data on squid catches, water temperature, and climatic factors collected for the Northwest and subtropical North Pacific were analyzed to examine the influence of oceanic and climatic conditions in spawning grounds on catches of Japanese common squid, Todarodes pacificus, in the East (Japan) Sea. The main spawning ground was divided into four sub-areas: the South Sea of Korea (R1), the southern waters off Jeju, Korea (R2), the southwestern part of Kyushu, Japan (R3), and the northern part of Okinawa, Japan (R4). Interannual and decadal fluctuations in water temperatures correlated well with squid catches in the East/Japan Sea. In particular, water temperatures at a depth of 50 to 100 m in sub-areas R3 and R4 showed higher correlation coefficients (0.54 to 0.59, p<0.01) in relation to squid catches in the East/Japan Sea than for R1 and R2, which had correlation coefficients of 0.40 or less (p>0.05). Air temperature and wind velocity fluctuations in each sub-area are correlated with water temperature fluctuations and were closely connected with variations in the surface mixed layers. Water, air temperatures and wind velocities at the main spawning grounds are linked to the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) with higher signals in the ca. 2-4-year band. Strong changes in a specific band and phase occurred around 1976/77 and 1986/87, coincident with changes in squid catches.
