This paper described the experimental squid jigging fishery conducted by a commercial fishing vessel in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean from August to October 2005. Author carried out experimental jiggings of 65 times during 57 days by three type of jigs which were pick jig, soft jig and soft luminous jig. The total catch, effort/day and catches/line-day of northern shortfin squid (Illex illecebrosus) were 12,726kg, 35 auto jigging machine and 3.5kg, respectively. Higher CUPE was observed in September, August and October. Catch ratio of pick jig was higher by 57-86% than those of soft jig and soft luminous jig. Higher catch was recorded at the $42^{\circ}55'N,\;62^{\circ}10'W$ with surface temperature ranging $18-21^{\circ}C$. The range of the dorsal mantle length was from 13.5cm to 23.0cm with average 17.2cm for female and from 13.0cm to 20.0cm with average 17.0cm for male. Sex ratio showed 55.4% of female.
We developed an ecosystem indicator (EI) for the coastal and offshore areas of Korean waters. One of the major scientific challenges of this undertaking was to translate broad policy statements for ecosystem-based fisheries management (EBFM) into practical terms. Fish reproduction potential (FRP) was defined as an EI to describe the reproductive probability of adult fisheries resources in Korean waters. The FRP was estimated as the ratio of adult fish composition to total catch, catches (in metric tons) by species and by ecosystem, and fishery effort (in horse power per metric ton). The FRP indices of the East/japan Sea Ecosystem (EJSE), Yellow Sea Ecosystem (YSE), and East China Sea Ecosystem (ECSE) began to decrease after the mid-1980s, and the current indices have decreased further, at 0.63 (EJSE), 1.22 (YSE), and 0.68 (ECSE) index points compared to the indices of 1975, when similar catch amounts were recorded. Lower FRPs in the Korean marine ecosystems were the result of higher proportion of immature fisheries resources in the total catch. Because this kind of ecosystem-level indicator is thought to reflect scientific approaches to EBFM and to provide an important tool for assessing the current status of marine ecosystems with respect to both quantity and quality, more EIs should be developed for Korean waters.
This research was as part of restocking project conducted until 1986. The necessity of its economic and scientific verification on restocking project increased. The economic analysis of this project was intended to measure its effectiveness of rockfish restocking throughout certain water areas. The rockfish restocking in 2008 was carried two regional governments of Gyeongnam and Busan. 3-year average annualized performance is 3.76 million rockfish restocked and 940 million won invested. As Gyeongnam restocked 3.62 million rockfish and invested 890 million won, most of rockfish stocking accomplished in Gyeongnam. The public shipment was the 3-year average amount was about 400 tons. Each Suhyup shipment as follows; TongYong 66.6 tons, Namhae 23.6 tons, Samcheonpo 17.2 tons; Yeosu 13.3 tons, Geoje 4.7 tons, Goseong 3.1 tons, Hadong 1.0 tons. The private shipment was assessed by the interview of relevant market participations. The high percent areas of public ship were Nemaha, Goseong 90% and Geoje 80% or more. Hadong and Samcheonpo were about 50%. TongYong was 10% and the lowest. The private shipment was calculated using the percentage of private shipment surveyed. The total amount of private shipment was 4.8 billion, where 4.5 billion was TongYong, where most of private shipment is being made. The positive economic benefit occurred when the percent of restocked is over 15% in the overall catch. The percentage of restocked investigated with genetic test was 58.2%. With 58.2% ratio of restocked, there was 3.8 times economic benefit according to approximately 3.6 billion won. Economic effects were highly significant. As catch increased according restocking, joint market commission increased. Joint market commission was calculated as total restocked shipment multiplied by the ratio of commission, the calculated commissions were as follows; Hadong 5.0%, Geoje 4.8%, Goseong 4.8%, Namhae 4.8%, Samcheonpo 4.3%, Yeosu 4.3%, TongYong 4.0%. According to calculation results, annual commission fee of ₩60,000,000 was raised during 2006~2008. The fishing catch bulk for entertainment significantly increased in sea area carried with mass restock.
Shrimp beam trawl fishery is one of the important coastal fisheries in Korea. It has a regulation to the length of beam (8m) and wing net (7m) of shrimp beam trawl that has been used in the district of Junlanam-do and Gyungsangnam-do. This regulation was made in relation to the size of shrimp beam trawler of 3-ton class at that time. Now the shrimp beam fishing vessel has a limit not greater than 5 tons in gross ton. Recently, with improvement of fishing industry and fishing vessel fishermen asked the expansion of the length of beam and wing net, therefore it is necessary to investigate the effect of lengthening the beam and wing net length. Three different beams (8m, 10m and 12m in length) and three different wing net (7m, 10m and 13m in length) were made and the experiment was conducted near Narodo of Goheng by two fishing vessels of 4.98 and 4.88 tons in gross ton between June 2011 and October 2012. When the length of wing net was increased from 7m to 10m and 13m, the relative catch ratio in total biomass was increased 25% and 79% for shrimp, (17% and 22% in total), respectively. And when the beam length was increased from 8m to 10m and 12m, the relative catch ratio was increased 35% and 84% for shrimp, (21% and 37% in total), respectively. The force exerted to the iron guide of inhauler's with the beam length of 8m was about 30% greater than that with the beam length of 10m when hauling the shrimp beam trawl net.
To determine the relative efficiency and mesh selectivity of gill net for the Pacific saury, Cololabis saira, a series of fishing experiments was carried out in the Northwest Pacific Ocean from August 13 to October 13 in 2002, using gill nets of different mesh size(30, 33, 35, 37, 39 and 42mm) constructed from two kinds of twine material(monofilament, twisted multifilament nylon web). The relative efficiency of two material gears was expressed as the ratio obtained by dividing monofilament catch by multifilament catch in number. The master selection curve of each material gear was estimated by applying the extended Kitahara's method. The catch of experimental gears is mostly Pacific saury(98.6%), Cololabis saira. The kinds of bycatch are common squid(0.7%), Pacific mackerel(0.6%), etc. Catch comparisons in the two gears showed that monofilament nylon nets are 1.7 times more efficient. The optimum values in monofilament and multifilament gill net for Pacific saury are 8.28 and 8.23, respectively.

Groupers (Family Epinephelidae) are commonly caught in data-poor small-scale multi-species fisheries for sale on both export and domestic markets. This study presents data on the species composition and size/life-stage structure of Epinephelus spp. groupers caught by small-scale fishers and sold locally in the Indonesian province of South Sulawesi. Data were collected from fishing ports and local markets at 12 sites representing the three seaways around South Sulawesi (Makassar Strait, Flores Sea, Gulf of Bone). Each specimen (n = 3,398) was photographed alongside an object of known length, and total length (TL) was obtained using the Rapid Scaling on Object (RASIO). Of the 23 species identified, four (Epinephelus areolatus, Epinephelus ongus, Epinephelus quoyanus, and Epinephelus fasciatus) collectively comprised 69% of the catch, while the 13 least abundant species contributed less than 5%. The catch was dominated (67%) by the subadult life-stage, with just under 20% in the adult class. Juveniles dominated the catch of Epinephelus fuscoguttatus, a valuable export commodity. Observations of early maturity as well as the sizeable gap between length at first capture (Lc) and length at first maturity (Lm) indicate recruitment overfishing of most species, with the notable exception of Epinephelus rivulatus. The proportion of adult fish was low (≈5%-30%) for the twelve most abundant species (E. areolatus, E. ongus, Epinephelus quoyanus, E. fasciatus, Epinephelus coioides, Epinephelus faveatus, Epinephelus sexfasciatus, Epinephelus maculatus, Epinephelus bleekeri, Epinephelus corallicola, E. fuscoguttatus, Epinephelus polyphekadion). For two moderately abundant species (E. faveatus and E. malabaricus), TL < Lm for all specimens. The limited data available indicate spawning ratio is lower than reported from deep-water fisheries of E. areolatus and E. coioides. The results call for targeted research to fill knowledge gaps regarding the biology and ecology of groupers exploited mainly for domestic markets; highlight the need for species-level data to inform management policies such as minimum legal size regulations; and can contribute towards species-level status assessments.

Structural health monitoring (SHM) is a necessity for reliable and efficient functioning of engineering systems. Damage detection (DD) is a crucial component of any SHM system. Lamb waves are a popular means to DD owing to their sensitivity to small damages over a substantial length. This typically involves an active sensing paradigm in a pitch-catch setting, that involves two piezo-sensors, a transmitter and a receiver. In this paper, we propose a data-intensive DD approach for beam structures using high frequency signals acquired from beams in a pitch-catch setting. The key idea is to develop a statistical learning-based approach, that harnesses the inherent sparsity in the problem. The proposed approach performs damage detection, localization in beams. In addition, quantification is possible too with prior calibration. We demonstrate numerically that the proposed approach achieves 100% accuracy in detection and localization even with a signal to noise ratio of 25 dB.
In order to describe the performance of a wedge type jellyfish excluder device, a series of fishing experiments was carried out in the coastal areas of Yokji Island, southern Korea in 2009, using a trawl net with a cover net. The body size and weight of each individual (fish or jellyfish) caught in the experimental fishing were measured. In the case of giant jellyfish the bell diameter and weight were measured. The catch species was composed of giant jellyfish (Nemopilema nomurai), silver croaker (Pennahia argentata), yellow croaker (Larimichthys polyactics), finespotted flounder (Pleuronichthys cornutus), largehead hairtail (Trichiuruslepturus), melon seed (Psenopsisanomala) and so on. The weight ratio and individual ratio of total fish escaped through the outlet of the excluder device were 0.322 and 0.320, respectively. The weight ratios of giant jellyfish excluded from the trawl net ranged from 0.740 to 0.921 (average 0.852/haul). It means that the wedge type jellyfish excluder device performed well and allowed the most of the giant jellyfish to exclude through the trawl net. The approximately 70% of fish entered in trawl net was caught. The wedge type excluder device needs some improvements to minimize the fish escape from the trawl nets in the future.
The purpose of this study was to provide information about annual variations in catch size and changes in reproductive biology in the common octopus Octopus vulgaris, a commercially important species. Samples were collected from coastal waters off Gyeongnam, Korea, by coastal trap and coastal complex fishery from February to December 2018. Octopus vulgaris have been decreasing in this region since 2007 and catch prices have been increasing. The mantle length (ML) of O. vulgaris ranged from 1.2 to 21.2 cm and body weight ranged from 42.6 to 5,537 g. The sex ratio differed significantly from what was expected, at 0.45:0.55 (P<0.05). Mature females were found from February to December, except in October and November, and males occurred from February to December, except in October. The gonadosomatic index value was higher from May to September than in other months. The total number of eggs in fecund individuals ranged from 40,280 in 578.1 g of body weight to 138,994 in 1,666.5 g of body weight. The relationship between body weight and fecundity was F=76.486BW1.0087 (r2=0.7897). At 50% group maturity, average weight was estimated to be 636.35 g, while it was 969.30 g at 75% maturity and 1736.55 g at 97.5% maturity. This study highlights changes in catch size and reproductive biology between 2007 and 2018. These results provide basic evidence that may be used to establish regulatory policy for O. vulgaris fisheries.
Distribution of fish products from Tongyoung Marine ranching can be classified by three routes such as street-stall, live fish transportation vehicles, and wholesale markets neighboring unloading ports. These methods of distribution, however, have been restricted by limited distribution right, difficulties to differentiate fish prices from other surfaces, simple marketing channels. The ratio of cultured live fish circulated in market is increasing while naturally caught live fish is decreasing and the fresh fish shows a little of increasing rate. Consumers purchasing routes mainly depend on the live fish transportation merchants. For fresh fish traditional market plays an important role in trade. Convenience for consumers and quality of products are main factors in making decision of purchases. Bargaining power, however, belongs to the live fish transportation merchants. The demand of special markets for live fish was very strong, and the convenience and quality are relatively important required factors. Catch from Tongyoung Marine ranching has very good reputation as the possibility of being a good brand. Expecting possibility of quality differentiation was higher than price differentiation specially. The possible conclusion of a contract of a supply was suspicious however. Preliminary quality evaluation revealed that the catch is better than the cultured but worse than naturally grown fish. A merchandising is to be in a better position in the formation of prices by giving $\ulcorner$brand image$\lrcorner$ to potential consumers. The target markets are retail stores such as restaurants for raw fish and final consumers. The staple markets are retail stores. Possible items of products are live fish, fresh fish for cook, and fresh fish for raw fish. It is necessary for the catch to be informed as new functional products that have been improved in safety and quality, since the product positioning is similar but not well known to consumers. To secure a brand it is required to register a trademark, eco-label product design or packing, use real name in tranction, introduce recall system, and put label. Price higher than naturally grown live fish should be targeted. Establishing broad distribution channel, wholesale market, franchise are required. To secure enough catch and control shipment of products facilities of containing live fish are necessary. Instead of dealing with live fish only, it would be better to. sell fresh fish and live fish simultaneous. Strategically promotion focuses on advertisement of Marin ranching at first and then focuses on the catch from the marine ranching.
