Pitch based activated carbon fiber(ACF) was prepared from reformed naphtha cracking bottom oil(NCB oil) by melt spinning. The fibers obtained were stabilized, carbonized, and then steam activated. The ACF was sensitized with Pd-Sn catalytic nuclei via a single-step activation approach. This sensitized ACF was used as precursors for obtaining copper plated ACFs via electroless plating. ACFs uniformly decorated with metal particles were obtained with reduced copper plating in the reaction solution. Effects of the amount of copper on characteristics of ACF/Cu catalysts were investigated through BET surface area, X-ray diffraction, scanning emission microscopy, and ICP. The amount of copper increased with plating time, but the surface area as well as the pore volume decreased. NO conversion increased with reaction temperature. NO conversion decreased with increasing the amount of copper, which is seemed to be due to the reduction of surface area as well as the dispersion of copper.

Hypersonic aircraft technologies have been developed with increase in flight speeds. As hypersonic flight speeds increase, heat loads on an aircraft and it's engine increase. Researches on cooling technologies using endothermic fuels are progressing in the USA, France, and Russia to treat the heat loads. Endothermic fuels are liquid hydrocarbon aircraft fuels which are able to absorb the heat loads by undergoing endothermic reactions, such as thermal and catalytic cracking. In this study, methylcyclohexane, n-octane, and n-dodecane were selected as model endothermic fuels and experiments in endothermic properties were implemented. Experimental conditions were supercritical phase of each model fuels in which actual endothermic fuels were exposed. The object of this study is to identify endothermic properties of the model endothermic fuels and to predict endothermic properties of actual fuels such as kerosene fuels.

As hypersonic flight speeds and engines efficiencies increase, heat loads on an aircraft and it's engine increase. Because the temperature of the air flow is too high to cool the aircraft structure at hypersonic flight speeds, it is essential to use the aircraft fuel as the primary coolant. Endothermic fuels are liquid hydrocarbon aircraft fuels which are able to absorb the heat loads by undergoing endothermic reactions, such as thermal and catalytic cracking. The endothermic reactions are improved by catalysts which change the extent of reaction and product distribution. At high temperature, liquid hydrocarbons would lead to coke formation that can reduce the effectiveness of heat exchanger and cause rapid degradation of the catalyst, thus endothermic capacity of endothermic fuels is limited to the temperature at which coke doesn't form. In this study, the essential cooling technologies by applying endothermic fuels and the properties of the endothermic fuels are described.

Due to the physical-chemical characteristics of some bottom ash (BA), there are technical, economic and environmental limitations to find a destination that will add value to it. In Brazil, this residue is eventually used for filling coal extraction pits or remains in sedimentation ponds, creating a susceptible panorama to environmental issues. The geopolymers binders are one of the alternatives to the proper use high amounts of these materials. In this work, geopolymeric binder pastes were produced with BA mixed to activators with different alkali contents (expressed as %Na2O), as well as the incorporation of soluble silicates (Ms content). The production of binary geopolymeric pastes based on the use of two industrial wastes: fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) and aluminum anodizing sludge (AAS), was also assessed. The content in mass of BA/FCC and BA/AAS ranged from 100/0, 90/10; 80/20 and 70/30. Systems with soluble silicates as activator in a molar ratio SiO2/Na2O of 1.0 (Ms = 1.0) and Na2O content of 15%, showed the best results of mechanical strength (42 MPa at day 28th). The improvement is up to 5X when compared to NaOH based systems. For systems with partial replacement of BA of 10% of AAS and 20% of FCC (80/20), the presence of soluble silicates was also effective to increase compressive strength.

This review article highlights different types of nano-sized catalysts for the selective alcohol oxidation to form aldehydes (or ketones) with supported or immobilized metal nanoparticles. Metal nanoparticle catalysts are obtained through dispersing metal nanoparticles over a solid support with a large surface area. The nanocatalysts have wide technological applications to industrial and academic fields such as organic synthesis, fuel cells, biodiesel production, oil cracking, energy conversion and storage, medicine, water treatment, solid rocket propellants, chemicals and dyes. One of main reactions for the nanocatalyst is an aerobic oxidation of alcohols to produce important intermediates for various applications. The oxidation of alcohols by supported nanocatalysts including gold, palladium, ruthenium, and vanadium is very economical, green and environmentally benign reaction leading to decrease byproducts and reduce the cost of reagents as opposed to stoichiometric reactions. In addition, the room temperature alcohol oxidation using nanocatalysts is introduced.
In chemical-looping combustion, pure oxygen is transferred to fuel by solid particles called as oxygen carrier. Chemical-looping combustion process usually utilizes a circulating fluidized-bed process for fuel combustion and regeneration of the reduced oxygen carrier. The performance of an oxygen carrier varies with the active metal oxide and the raw support materials used. In this work, spraydried Mn-based oxygen carriers were prepared with different raw support materials and their physical properties and oxygen transfer performance were investigated to determine that the raw support materials used are suitable for spray-dried manganese oxide oxygen carrier. Oxygen carriers composed of 70 wt% $Mn_3O_4$ and 30 wt% support were produced using spray dryer. Two different types of $Al_2O_3$, ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ and ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$, and $MgAl_2O_4$ were applied as starting raw support materials. The oxygen carrier prepared from ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ showed high mechanical strength stronger than commercial fluidization catalytic cracking catalyst at calcination temperatures below $1100^{\circ}C$, while the ones prepared from ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ and $MgAl_2O_4$ required higher calcination temperatures. Oxygen transfer capacity of the oxygen carrier prepared from ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ was less than 3 wt%. In comparison, oxygen carriers prepared from ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ and $MgAl_2O_4$ showed higher oxygen transfer capacity, around 3.4 and 4.4 wt%, respectively. Among the prepared Mn-based oxygen carriers, the one made from $MgAl_2O_4$ showed superior oxygen transfer performance in the chemical-looping combustion of $CH_4$, $H_2$, and CO. However, it required a high calcination temperature of $1400^{\circ}C$ to obtain strong mechnical strength. Therefore, further study to develop new support compositions is required to lower the calcination temperature without decline in the oxygen transfer performance.
Light cycle oil (LCO), one of the by-products of the catalytic cracking gasoline manufacturing process, contains a lot of valuable aromatics. In particular, 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene (2,6-DMN) contained in LCO has been becoming important as the basic material of polyethylene naphthalate plastic and liquid crystal polymer, etc. If it were possible to separate and purify the valuable aromatic hydrocarbons (such as 2,6-DMN) from LCO, which have only been used as fuel mixed with heavy oil, it would be very meaningful in terms of the efficient use of resources. We investigated the high-purity purification of 2,6-DMN by the combined method of melt crystallization (MC) and solute crystallization (SC). The enriched DMN isomer mixtures (concentration of 2,6-DMN : 10.43%) recovered from LCO by distillation-extraction combination and the crystal recovered by MC used as raw materials of MC and SC, respectively. The solvent of SC used was a mixture of methanol and acetone (60 : 40 wt%). The crystal of 2,6-DMN with a high-purity of 99.5% was recovered by MC-SC combination. We confirmed that the MC-SC combination was one of the very useful combinations for the high-purity purification of 2,6-DMN contained in the enriched DMN isomer mixtures.
