  • The purpose of the study is to call forth a special attention to nonbook materials as part of library materials and to improve its bibliographic study of the Korean library community. For this purpose, this paper will concern the cataloging codes of nonbook materials in Anglo-American tradition for discussion, analyses and comparison. Furthermore, an emphasis was made on the general historical development of nonbook cataloging codes mainly used in U. S. and its impact on Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR). In addition, in the part III of AACR1, several controversial issues will be argued for further revision in provision. As shown in the revised Chapter 12 of AACR 1, this thesis will try to identify common characteristics and requirements of the standard cataloging codes. It will require a comparison of various subjects with three other leading international cataloging codes, served as the principal sources of information for the revision. And my final discussion will be argued for the comparison of the differences between AACR 1 and AACR 2 with exemples.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the distinctiveness and problem areas in cataloging rules of sound recordings. In this study, therefore, the characteristics and kinds of sound recordings and the cataloging rules related to sound recordings in non-book cataloging rules are examined first as the backgrounds. Then the sources of information, general material designation, physical description, choice of headings, and uniform titles in ISBD(NBM)·AACR2R·AECT4 and KORMARC(NBM) are analyzed. And the special issues and some problems to be considered in cataloging of sound recordings are presented.

This study explores problem areas in bibliographic control and descriptive cataloging for NBM and issues to be decided in cataloging policy for NBM are presented. Recently proposed KORMARC Rules for Descriptive Cataloging, NBM is looked into and compared with AACR2R and some problems to be considered for revising are suggested. Principle and tools needed for subject analysis of NBM are discussed and special issues of subject analysis for NBM are presented.

  • The purposes of this study are to explore FRBR utilities such as work clustering and expression clustering and problems of application of the FRBR by developing work and expression clustering algorithm and implementing it into cataloging system, and to suggest new cataloging rules for FRBR and guideline of MARC description to improve FRBR work clustering. FRBR was suggested by necessitation of collocation function of bibliographic records according to increase of searching materials and multi-version materials, but FRBRization has some problems such as imperfect conversion of bibliographic records to FRBR records and inappropriateness of current cataloging rules for FRBR. Bibliographic records must be processed by FRBR algorithm to construct FRBRized system, but bibliographic records and current cataloging rules couldn't perfectly support FRBRization. Therefore cataloging rules and guidelines of MARC description for FRBR are needed. For constructing FRBRized cataloging system in Korea, it is needed to find problems and solution through FRBR practical application such as developing FRBR algorithm and applying it to cataloging records.

  • This study aims to discuss cataloging on multicultural collection in Korean libraries. Especially, this study emphasized to derive a lesson of immeasurable value from the cataloging experience in International Children's Library at Asia School. To the end, (1) comprehensive literature survey and analysis were conducted to introduce the discussion on cataloging for multicultural or multilingual collection, (2) the cataloging examples were examined comprehensively (the data needed were collected by public, academic and nonofficial libraries in Korea, as well as several libraries in North America), and finally (3) cataloging policy and practices for multicultural collection were suggested on the basis of the experience in International Children's Library at Asia School.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate material designation in library cataloging and to suggest General Material Designation (GMD) and Specific Material Designation(SMD) in Korean. A summary of the study follows. In library cataloging, methods of indicating the type of material are : (1) color-coding, (2) media code as part of the call number, (3) material designation in physical description area or note area, (4) GMD and SMD. GMD is a term indicating the broad class of material to which a bibliographic item belongs. SMD is a term indicating the special class of material to which a bibliographic item belongs. GMD was listed in parenthesis following the title proper before AACR1975 code, but currently it is listed in square brackets after the AACR1975 code. AACR2 was the standard cataloging rule in GMD and SMD terminology. It is suggested that GMD be used in Korean for graphic material, sound recordings, drawings, microform, multimedia, videorecordings, manuscripts, photographs, slides, printed music, motion pictures, printed texts, objects, braille, cartographic materials, computer files and transparenies.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the problems of the each cataloging rules about the physical description area that generated the greatest controversy in the cataloging of microcomputer software, and to suggest solutions of these problems. The results of the study can be summarized as follows: 1. Because the physical description area of materials is to identify the physical attributes of the carrier, file description might better described in the material specific details area. 2. Integrated software that related file is linked together need to be used terms that represented any type of software 3. It is desirable that the term 'computer' is to be used as a modifier to devide the carrier of microcomputer and other non book materials. 4. System requirements would better described in a note area rather than physical, description area. 5. It is desirable that other physical details such as recording density, tracks, etc., is to describe in the physical description area, since such information is to represent specifics of the carrier.

  • The purpose of this paper is to present core elements of bibliographic records to effective cataloging a variety of information materials such as monographs, non-book materials, serials, and internet resources. At first, AACR2R bibliographic data elements, the minimal level cataloging, and core records proposed by Progrma for Cooperative Cataloging(PCC) in Library of congress are discussed. After that elements of Core Records, dublin Core, KORMARC, and AACR2R are compared. Upon the results, this study suggests mandatory common core elements and optional core elements for cost-effective cataloging to all kinds of documents including internet resources.

  • The revision of the Korean Cataloging Rules (KCR) is in progress in order to conform IFLA LRM conceptual model and to strengthen its internal stability. Religious works, along with musical works and legal works, have been treated as special and important in cataloging rules. This trend continues in the new cataloging rules that seek a bibliographic model that interconnects related materials. However since KCR2(1966), there are no rules for access points or specific rules on religious works. Under the circumstances, this study analyzed (1) the contents of religious works in the recently revised cataloging rules, (2) the access points and their functions for religious works implemented in online catalogs and authority system, and finally (3) the direction and scope of KCR revision. As a result of the study, this study suggested that it is necessary to prepare detailed rules for preferred title and authorized access points for various religious works in KCR. In conclusion, some issues for further discussion were summarized.
