  • The effects of applied pressure, superheat and silicon content on the fluidity of Al-Si alloy during squeeze casting were investigated. The Fluidity of Al-7.0wt%Si alloy during squeeze casting was increased with applied pressure up to 60 MPa, meanwhile it rather decreased beyond that. Therefore, the optimum squeeze casting pressure was 60 MPa. The fluidity was increased with superheat up to $150^{\circ}C$. On the other hand, it rather decreased at the superheat of $200^{\circ}C$. The fluidity of Al-Si alloy during squeeze casting was decreased with silicon content in the range of $0.0{\sim}3.0\;wt%$, increased in the range of $3.0{\sim}13.0\;wt%$. The fluidity of Al-15.0 wt%Si alloy was lower than that of Al-13.0 wt%Si alloy.

  • The effect of the alloy systems Al-Mg alloy and Al-Si alloy in this study on the characteristics of die-casting were investigated using solidification simulation software (MAGMAsoft). Generally, it is well known that the casting characteristics of Al-Mg based alloys, such as the fluidity, feedability and die soldering behaviors, are inferior to those of Al-Si based alloys. However, the simulation results of this study showed that the filling pattern behaviors of both the Al-Mg and Al-Si alloys were found to be very similar, whereas the Al-Mg alloy had higher residual stress and greater distortion as generated due to solidification with a larger amount of volumetric shrinkage compared to the Al-Si alloy. The Al-Mg alloy exhibited very high relative numbers of stress-concentrated regions, especially near the rib areas. Owing to the residual stress and distortion, defects were evident in the Al-Mg alloy in the areas predicted by the simulation. However, there were no visible defects observed in the Al-Si alloy. This suggests that an adequate die temperature and casting process optimization are necessary to control and minimize defects when die casting the Al-Mg alloy. A Tatur test was conducted to observe the shrinkage characteristics of the aluminum alloys. The result showed that hot tearing or hot cracking occurred during the solidification of the Al-Mg alloy due to the large amount of shrinkage.

  • This paper was studied on the horizontal continuous casting of Al-xSi(x=10~15%) aluminum alloy. The experiments of the horizontal continuous casting was carried out by the horizontal continuous casting machine for various casting conditions and investigated on fracture types and mechanisms. Surface defect types for the horizontal continuous casting is also investigated. And the study was carried out that the horizontal continuous casting conditions such as casting temperature, cooling rate, and drawing speed affect the hardness and primary silicon size of Al-xSi(x=10~15%) aluminum rod bar. Casting temperature within this experiment conditions don't affect on the hardness of rod bar but the higher casting temperature is the smaller primary silicon size. The higher cooling rate and drawing speed have the higher hardness and the smaller primary silicon size.

  • This study numerically and experimentally investigated on thermal strain analysis of aluminum alloy casting mold using metal foundry. To predict the numerical result of thermal strain in Al alloy casting mold during the cooling process, it is performed the investigation of temperature distribution, stress and displacement based on the physical properties of Al alloy. In results of this study, Al alloy casting mold represented rapidly cooling graph during initial 20minutes after beginning cooling process, therefore value of stress and displacement is rapidly changed during initial 20minutes after beginning cooling process. In addition to, temperature distribution obtained by experiment confirmed corresponding pattern then compared numerical analysis with experiment. These results are distribute to make the effective and the high precision casting mold.

  • Magnesium alloys casting are gaining increased acceptance in the automotive and electronic industeries and die casting is the most efficient method of manufacturing such mass produced parts. This study has been investigated the microstructures and mechanical properties of Mg-9Al-lZn alloy fabricated by die casting process for development of air bag case. The microstructure of die casted specimen were composed of pro-eutectic magnesium solid solution and $\beta$(Mg17Al12) precipitates. The tensile strength of as-fabricated Mg-9Al-lZn alloy revealed 231.4MPa. It was found that Mg-9Al-lZn alloy have good corrosion resistance in electrochemical polarization test.

  • The effects of silicon content and melt treatment on the fluidity of Al-Si alloys during squeeze casting were investigated. The fluidity of Al-3.0 wt%Si alloy was found to be lower than that of Al-1.0 wt%Si and the fluidity of the alloy with more than 3.0 wt%Si increased with the silicon content upto 13.0 wt% and rather decreased with15.0 wt%. The fluidity was also increased by the separated treatment of grain refinement or eutectic modification, and even more by the simultaneous treatment of both. The fluidity of hypereutectic alloy was increased by the refinement of primary silicon particle.

  • Two different casting speeds of 60 and 80mm/min are adopted to determine the effect of casting speed on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-Mg-Si/Al hybrid material prepared by duo-casting. The obtained hybrid material has a uniform and straight macro-interface between the pure Al side and the Al-Mg-Si alloy side at both casting speeds. When the casting speed is increased to 80mm/min, the size of primary α phases in Al-Mg-Si alloy decreases, without change of shape. Although the Al-Mg-Si alloy produced at higher casting speed of 80mm/min shows much higher ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and 0.2 % proof stress and lower elongation, along with higher bending strength compared to the case of the 60mm/min in casting speed, the tensile properties and bending strength of the hybrid material, which are similar to those of pure Al, are the same regardless of the increase of casting speed. Despite the different casting speeds, deformation and fracturing in hybrid materials are observed only on the pure Al side. This indicates that the macro-interface is well-bonded, allowing it to endure tensile and bending deformation in all hybrid materials.

  • Microstructural and mechanical characteristics of Al-6Si-2Cu alloy for engine mount bracket prepared by gravity casting (as-cast) and die-casting (as-diecast) process have been investigated. For the microstructural characterization, the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) analyses are conducted. For the intermetallic phases, the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) are also conducted with quantitative and qualitative analysis. Micro Vickers hardness and static tensile test are achieved in order to measure mechanical properties of alloys. Secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) of as-cast and as-diecast show 37um and 18um, respectively. A large amount of coarsen eutectic Si, $Al_2Cu$ intermetallic phase and Fe-rich phases are identified in the Al-6Si-2Cu alloy. Mechanical properties of gravity casting alloy are much higher than those of die-casting alloy. Especially, yield strength and elongation of gravity casting alloy show 2 times higher than die-casting alloy. After shot peening, shot peening refined the surface grains and Si particles of the alloys by plastic deformation. The surface hardness value shows that shot peening alloy has higher value than unpeening alloy.
