In this study, optimal shot peening process conditions were investigated for improving the cavitation erosion resistance of gray cast iron under a marine environment. Shot peening was performed with variables of injection pressure and injection time. The durability was then evaluated through cavitation erosion test which was conducted according to the modified ASTM G-32 standard. The tendency of cavitation erosion damage according to shot peening process condition was investigated through weight loss rate, surface and cross-sectional analysis of the specimen before and after the test. As a result, the shot peening process condition that could minimize cavitation erosion was when the injection pressure was the lowest and when the injection time was the shortest. This was because the flake graphite exposed on the gray cast iron surface could be easily removed under such condition. Therefore, the notch effect can be prevented by surface modification. In addition, the cavitation erosion damage mechanism of gray cast iron was discussed in detail.
This study has been carried out to investigate into the difference of rolling life and rolling wear characteristics for various gray cast iron under unlubricated dry rolling condition by amsler type wear test with 9.09% sliding. The results obtained from this study are summerized as follows: 1) It has been found that the amount of rolling wear id decreased when tensile strength and hardness are low, and then the rolling life up to generation of abnormal wear is conspicuously increased. 2) At the given condition the amount of rolling wear has been found to decrease as carbon equivalent of gray cast iron increases and resistance of crack propagation is an important factor on improvement of wear characteristics. 3) The amount of rolling wear is increased with increasing rolling revolution and wear of gray cast iron under dry rolling condition is characterized by three modes; initial wear, stationary wear and abnormal wear. 4) It has been found that the amount of rolling wear is increased with increasing maximum compressive stress and extremely increased when maximum compressive stress is over 59.1kg.f/mm.
This paper presents the integrity evaluation method of the windings in cast resin transformers using vertical thermal distribution analysis. The method is to compare the temperature distribution in a sound condition specimen with that in the failure condition specimen layer-shorted by accelerated testing. The temperature distribution was acquisited by a infrared thermography system, and the Arrhenius equation was adopted to the accelerated testing. The proposed method may be available to detect the failures in cast resin transformers.
Cast defect in large steel ingots are estimated in quality and compared each other cast conditions on simulation results by now. The cast defects, micro-crack, shrinkage, pin hole which are predictable in simulation with a reasonable accuracy. In this study, 15 ton steel ingot casting was simulated for solidification model and cast defect prediction. And the real cast was carried out in a foundry for the compeer to the simulation results, the cast defect prediction. Also, the quantity of predicted defect was tried to measuring with the defect mach counting for the various simulated cast conditions. The defect quantity work was used to find the optimized cast condition in DOE(design of experiment) procedure.

Friction and wear test for two kinds of Cu-based sintered metallic friction material against cast iron disk was carried out by plate-on-disk type friction and wear tester to investigate the friction and wear characteristics of brake system in severe condition. In this experimental study, the counter specimen was cast iron which is being used generally in brakes of heavy duty equipments. Test friction materials were A type which was manufactured by foreign company and B type by domestic company. Friction coefficient and wear volume were measured and compared with each other. The experiment was performed under room temperature. The worn surface of cast iron disk and friction material were observed by scanning electron microscope. The temperature of surface of disk was measured continuously by the non-contacting thermometer. It was found that A type friction material had stable friction coefficient over the wide range of sliding condition, but B type friction material had unstable friction coefficient and lower value of 0.2 under the severe sliding condition.
Graphite spheroidization and scaling resistance of cast iron containing 5-10% Al were investigated. It is impossible to obtain spheroidal graphite in cast iron containing Al with 8 % and over, but possible to obtain spheroidal graphite even in cast iron with an Al content of about 10 % by increasing Si content. In the scaling test carried out under the heating condition of $950^{\circ}C$ in air for total of 50 hours, the scaling resistance of cast iron containing Al with 8 % and over was remarkably superior, and also spheroidal graphite cast iron was superior to flake graphite cast iron. The scale became thinner more compacts and more protective with increasing Al content.
Cast iron pipe has been used as a water distribution technology in North America since the early nineteenth century. The first cast iron pipes were made of grey cast iron which was succeeded by ductile iron as a pipe material in the 1940s. These different iron alloys have significantly different microstructures which give rise to distinct mechanical properties. Insight into the non-destructive structural condition assessment of aging pipes can be advantageous in developing mitigation strategies for pipe failures. This paper examines the relationship between the small-strain and large-strain properties of exhumed cast iron water pipes. Nondestructive and destructive testing programs were performed on eight pipes varying in age from 40 to 130 years. The experimental program included microstructure evaluation and ultrasonic, tensile, and flexural testing. New applications of frequency domain analysis techniques including Fourier and wavelet transforms of ultrasonic pulse velocity measurements are presented. A low correlation between wave propagation and large-strain measurements was observed. However, the wave velocities were consistently different between ductile and grey cast iron pipes (14% to 18% difference); the ductile iron pipes showed the smaller variation in wave velocities. Thus, the variation of elastic properties for ductile iron was not enough to define a linear correlation because all the measurements were practically concentrated in single cluster of points. The cross-sectional areas of the specimens tested varied as a result of minor manufacturing defects and levels of corrosion. These variations affect the large strain testing results; but, surface defects have limited effect on wave velocities and may also contribute to the low correlations observed. Lamb waves are typically not considered in the evaluation of ultrasonic pulse velocity. However, Lamb waves were found to contribute significantly to the frequency content of the ultrasonic signals possibly resulting in the poor correlations observed. Therefore, correlations between wave velocities and large strain properties obtained using specimens manufactured in the laboratory must be used with caution in the condition assessment of aged water pipes especially for grey cast iron pipes.
Ni-base superalloy Haynes 282 was developed as a gas turbine material for use in the ultra-super-critical stage (USC) of next-generation coal-fired power plants. Temperatures in the USC stage exceed $700^{\circ}C$ during operation. In spite of its important role Haynes 282 in increasing the performance of high-pressure turbines, as a result of its high-temperature capability, there is little information on the microstructure, deformation mechanism, or mechanical properties of the cast condition of this alloy. The aim of present study is to examine the creep properties of cast alloy and compare with wrought alloy. The ${\gamma}^{\prime}-precipitates$ were coarsen with the increase of aging time ranging from 8 to 48 hrs. A creep test performed at $750^{\circ}C$ showed faster minimum creep rate and shorter rupture lifetime with the aging time. A creep test performed showed only a slight difference in the rupture life between cast and wrought products. Based on the creep test results, the deformation mechanism is discussed using fractographs.
The effect of bonding condition on tensile properties of joints diffusion bonded spheroidal graphite cast iron, FCD60 to Cr-Mo steel, SCM 440 was investigated. Diffusion bonding was performed with various temperatures, holding times, pressures and atmospheres. All tensile specimens were fractured at the bonding interface. The tensile strength and elongation was increased with increasing bonding temperature. Especially, tensile strength of joints bonded at 1123K was higher than that of a raw material, FCD60, and tensile strength of joints bonded at 1173K was equal to that of a raw material, SCM440, but elongation of all joints was lower than those of raw materials. There was little the effect of holding time on the tensile properties. In comparison with bonding atmosphere, the difference of tensile strength was not observed, but elongation of joint bonded at vacuum(6.7mPa and 67mPa) was higher than that of Ar gas. Higher the degee of vacuum, elongation increased. Tensile properties of diffusion bonds depended on microstructures of cast iron at the interface and void ratio. Microstructures of cast iron at interface changed with temperature, because decarburizing and interdiffusion at the interface occurs and transformation of austenite-1 ferrite + graphite occurs on the cooling process. The void ratio decreased with increasing temperature, especially, effected on the elongation.
