An Improved Switching Topology for Single Phase Multilevel Inverter with Capacitor Voltage Balancing Technique

  • This paper presents a new cascaded asymmetrical single phase multilevel converter with a reduced number of isolated DC sources and power semiconductor switches. The proposed inverter has only two H-bridges connected in cascade, one switching at a high frequency and the other switching at a low frequency. The Low Switching Frequency Inverter (LSFI) generates seven levels whereas the High Switching Frequency Inverter (HSFI) generates only two levels. This paper also presents a solution to the capacitor balancing issues of the LSFI. The proposed inverter has lot of advantages such as reductions in the number of DC sources, switching losses, power electronic devices, size and cost. The proposed inverter with a capacitor voltage balancing algorithm is simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK. The switching logic of the proposed inverter with a capacitor voltage balancing algorithm is developed using a FPGA SPATRAN 3A DSP board. A laboratory prototype is built to validate the simulation results.

  • In this study, a new type of cascaded modular multilevel inverters (CMMLIs) is presented which is able to produce a considerable number of output voltage levels with a reasonable number of components. Accordingly, each series stage of the proposed CMMLI is comprised of two same basic units that are connected with each other through two unidirectional power switches without aiming any of the full H-bridge cells. In addition, since the potentiality for generating a higher number of output voltage levels in CMMLIs hinges on the magnitude of the dc voltage sources used in each series unit, in the rest of this paper, four different algorithms for determining an appropriate value for the dc sources' magnitude are also presented. In the following, a comprehensive topological analysis between some CMMLI structures reported in the literature and proposed structure along with several simulation and experimental results will be also given to validate the lucrative benefits and viability of the proposed topology.

  • The static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) of cascaded H-bridge configuration accompanying multiple separate DC sides is inherently subject to the problem of uneven DC voltages. These DC voltages in one leg can be controlled by adjusting the AC-side output voltage of each cell inverter, which is proportional to the active power. However, when the phase current is extremely small, large AC-side voltage is required to generate the active power to balance the cell voltages. In this study, an alternative zero-sequence current injection method is proposed, which facilitates effective cell balancing controllers at no load, and has no effect on the power grid because the injected zero sequence current only flows within the STATCOM delta circuit. The performance of the proposed method is verified through simulation and experiments.

  • 본 논문은 포워드-플라이백 컨버터와 태양광 단일 전원 비대칭 다단식 H-bridge 다중 레벨 인버터를 적용한 태양광 전력 조절 시스템에 관한 논문이다. 이는 기존에 연구되었던 대칭형 다단식 H-Brdige 다중 레벨 인버터나 플라이백 컨버터를 사용한 태양광 전력 조절 시스템의 단점을 보완 한 것이다. 대칭형 다단식 멀티 레벨 인버터는 각 H-Bridge 구조 마다 독립된 전원이 필요하지만, 포워드-플라이백(Foward-Flyback) 컨버터를 접목시켜 단일 태양광 전원으로 하나의 다단식 H-Brdige 인버터를 구성 할 수 있고, 또한 기존의 플라이백 컨버터를 포워드-플라이백 컨버터로 대체 하면서 기존 대비 대용량 설비가 용이하고 효율적인 태양광 전력 조절 시스템을 설계 할 수 있다. 제안한 시스템의 가능성을 확인하기 위하여, PSIM 시뮬레이션을 통해 계통 연계형 1kW급 태양광 시스템의 최대 전력 추종 제어(Maximum Power Point Tracking)와 인버터의 $V_{dc}$ 전압 제어를 확인하였다.

  • This paper is analyzed a new modulation method of OSW(Optimized Sine-Wave) modulation strategy for cascaded H-bridge multi-level inverter. The inverter structure was modified with the maximum output voltage level, and the switching angle was calculated easily to adjust the requested Vrms of the output. The suggested modulation method could make output waveform very close to the ideal sine wave, and the THD value was improved also remarkably.

  • 전기로와 같은 고압, 대용량의 산업응용분야에서 전원 안정화를 목적으로 하는 변동부하에 의해 발생되는 정상분 및 역상분의 무효전력을 보상하기 위한 고성능의 STATCOM의 개발이 요구되었다. 본 논문에서는 POSCO ICT에서 개발한 22.9kV 5MVA STATCOM(static synchronous compensator)에 대해 기술하였다. 개발된 STATCOM은 다단 멀티레벨 컨버터(Cascaded Multilevel Converter) 방식으로 Delta 구성하였으며, 각상당 12개의 H-Bridge Inverter가 직렬로 구성되어 25 레벨의 전압을 출력한다.

Pulse-Width Modulation Strategy for Common Mode Voltage Elimination with Reduced Common Mode Voltage Spikes in Multilevel Inverters with Extension to Over-Modulation Mode

  • This paper presents a pulse-width modulation strategy to eliminate the common mode voltage (CMV) with reduced CMV spikes in multilevel inverters since a high CMV magnitude and its fast variations dv/dt result in bearing failure of motors, overvoltage at motor terminals, and electromagnetic interference (EMI). The proposed method only utilizes the zero CMV states in a space vector diagram and it is implemented by a carrier-based pulse-width modulation (CBPWM) method. This method is generalized for odd number levels of inverters including neutral-point-clamped (NPC) and cascaded H-bridge inverters. Then it is extended to the over-modulation mode. The over-modulation mode is implemented by using the two-limit trajectory principle to maintain linear control and to avoid look-up tables. Even though the CMV is eliminated, CMV spikes that can cause EMI and bearing current problems still exist due to the deadtime effect. As a result, the deadtime effect is analyzed. By taking the deadtime effect into consideration, the proposed method is capable of reducing CMV spikes. Simulation and experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.

Harmonic Optimization Techniques in Multi-Level Voltage-Source Inverter with Unequal DC Sources

  • One of the major problems in electric power quality is the harmonic contents. There are several methods of indicating the quantity of harmonic contents. The most widely used measure is the total harmonic distortion (THD). Various switching techniques have been used in static converters to reduce the output harmonic content. This paper presents and compares the two harmonic optimization techniques, known as optimal minimization of the total harmonic distortion (OMTHD) technique and optimized harmonic stepped-waveform (OHSW) technique used in multi-level inverters with unequal dc sources. Both techniques are very effective and efficient for improving the quality of the inverter output voltage. First, we describe briefly the cascaded H-bridge multi-level inverter structure. Then, we present the switching algorithm for the inverter based on OHSW and OMTHD techniques. Finally, the results obtained for the two techniques are analyzed and compared. The results verify the effectiveness of the both techniques in multi-level voltage-source inverter with non-equal dc sources, clarifying the advantages of each technique.

Analysis on the effect of RC filter to mitigate transient overvoltage on the high voltage induction motor fed by Multi level inverter (멀티레벨 인버터 구동 고압유도전동기에서 발생하는 과도과전압 저감을 위한 RC필터의 효과분석)

  • In this paper, we analyze on the effect of RC filter to mitigate transient overvoltage on the high voltage induction motor fed by H-bridge cascaded 7-level inverter. The switching surge voltage becomes the major cause to occur the insulation failure by serious voltage stress in the stator winding of high voltage induction motor. The effect of switching surge appears more serious in high voltage induction motor than low voltage induction motor. Consequently, we demonstrated that the RC filter connected to the motor terminals greatly reduces the transient voltage stress md ringing. The results of simulation show the suppression of transient overvoltage at the motor end of a long cable. using EMTP

  • 논문은 동해화력발전처의 이차공기송풍기를 가변 회전수 제어하여 소내 소비 전력을 절감하고 전동기의 직입기동에 의한 스트레스를 줄이기 위하여 실증 적용된 동해화력발전처 이차 공기 송풍기 구동용 H-브릿지 멀티레벨 인버터에 관한 것이다. H-브릿지 멀티레벨 인버터는 독립적으로 절연된 직류 부를 갖는 저압의 단상 인버터(셀 인버터)를 다수 직렬 접속하여 고압 3상 전압을 출력하는 Cascaded H-브릿지 전압형 인버터이다. 본 논문에서는 동해화력발전처에 실증 적용된 6.6kV, 1MVA급 인버터의 계통 병입 후 부하 변동 시험을 통하여 신뢰성을 입증하였다.
