  • A three stage impactor with the cutoff diameters of 1, 2.5, and 10$\mu\textrm{m}$ in aerodynamic diameter was developed and tested. The gravimetric method and the particle counting method were utilized to evaluate the collection performance of each stage. A vibrating orifice aerosol generator was employed to generate monodisperse test aerosols larger that 2$\mu\textrm{m}$ in diameter. Polystyrene latex (PSL) particles smaller than 2$\mu\textrm{m}$ in diameter were generated by an atomizer and the particle number concentration was measured by an Aerodynamic Particle Sizer Spectrometer. The experimental cutoff diameters obtained from the particle collection efficiency curves are in good agreement with the designed values. The square roots of Stokes number at 50% collection efficiency for stage 1, 2, and 3 are 0.42, 0.48, and 0.45, respectively. Effects of the particle bounce and the impaction plate on the collection efficiency were investigated. The collection efficiency curves including effect of the particle bounce were also compared with those of the MOUDI cascade impactor.

  • A cascade impactor is a multistage impaction device used to separate airborne particles into aerodynamic size classes. A micro-orifice impactor uses micro-orifice nozzles to extend the cut sizes of the lower stages to as small as 0.05 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in diameter without resorting to low pressures or creating excessive pressure drops across the impactor stages. In this work, the phenomenon of particle clogging in micro-orifice nozzles was experimentally investigated for a commercial micro-orifice uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI). It was observed, using an optical microscope, that the micro-orifice nozzles of the final stages were partially clogged due to particle deposition during the aerosol sampling. Therefore the pressure drops across the nozzles were higher than the nominal values given by the manufacturer. To examine the effect of particle clogging in micro-orifice nozzles, the particle collection efficiency of the MOUDI was evaluated using an electrical method for fine particles with diameters in the range of 0.1-0.6 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The monodisperse liquid dioctyl sebacate (DOS) particles were used as test aerosols. A faraday cage was employed to measure the low-level current of the charged particles upstream and downstream of each stage. It was found that the collection efficiency curves shifted to correspond to smaller orifice sizes, and the 50-% cutoff sizes were much smaller than those given by the manufacturer for the three stages with nozzles less than 400 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in diameter.

  • A low pressure impactor is an impaction device to separate airborne particles into aerodynamic size classes at low pressure condition. We designed a two-stage low-pressure impactor to classify submicron sized environmental aerosols. Performance evaluation was carried out for stages 1 and 2 by using an electrical method. Monodisperse liquid dioctyl sebacate (DOS) particles were generated using evaporation-condensation process followed by electrostatic classification using a DMA (differential mobility analyzer). The test particles were in the range of 0.08∼0.8$\mu\textrm{m}$. For the evaluation of the impactor we used two electrometers; one was connected to the impaction plate of the impactor and the other was to the Faraday cage used as a backup filter. The effect of polydispersity of test aerosols on the performance was investigated. The results showed that the experimental 50-% cutoff diameters at each impactor's operation pressure were 0.53 and 0.187$\mu\textrm{m}$ for stages 1 and stage 2, respectively. The effects of operation pressure on the cutoff diameter and the steepness of collection efficiency curves were also investigated.

  • Background: Shipbuilding involves intensive welding activities, and welders are exposed to a variety of metal fumes, including manganese, that may be associated with neurological impairments. This study aimed to characterize total and size-fractionated manganese exposure resulting from welding operations in shipbuilding work areas. Methods: In this study, we characterized manganese-containing particulates with an emphasis on total mass (n = 86, closed-face 37-mm cassette samplers) and particle size-selective mass concentrations (n = 86, 8-stage cascade impactor samplers), particle size distributions, and a comparison of exposure levels determined using personal cassette and impactor samplers. Results: Our results suggest that 67.4% of all samples were above the current American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists manganese threshold limit value of $100{\mu}g/m^3$ as inhalable mass. Furthermore, most of the particles containing manganese in the welding process were of the size of respirable particulates, and 90.7% of all samples exceeded the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists threshold limit value of $20{\mu}g/m^3$ for respirable manganese. Conclusion: The concentrations measured with the two sampler types (cassette: total mass; impactor: inhalable mass) were significantly correlated (r = 0.964, p < 0.001), but the total concentration obtained using cassette samplers was lower than the inhalable concentration of impactor samplers.

  • The distribution of ambient air particles varies according to climate, industries, and other sources. In this study, ambient air particles (less than 12.1 ${\mu}m$) were monitored from February to August, 2007 as 12 different fractions sorted by a cascade impactor. Particles in the size range from 0.33 ${\mu}m$ to 0.76 ${\mu}m$ comprised the main fraction of ambient air particles in Seoul, Korea. On the day of an Asian dust event, the particle fraction size increased to 1.25~2.5 ${\mu}m$. The different sized particle fractions were also monitored for metals and were found to contain toxic heavy metals including Pb, Cd, Hg, Cr and As. Particle preparations were significantly cytotoxic when exposed to cultured BEAS-2B cells. Microarray analysis of the treated cells indicated a significant up-regulation of a number of genes associated with oxidative stress, including metallothionein, heme oxygenase-1, heat shock protein 70, and NAD(P)H dehydrogenase-1.

  • Monitoring of lead concentration in the ambient alt was performed in Kyung Hee University-Suwon Campus over a period of 5 year from November 1989 to September 1994 using a cascade impactor having 9 size stages. Lead level was analyzed by x-ray fluorescence. The lead levels have been extensively examined to identify annual trends, seasonal variations, and size distribution of lead concentration. Even though consumption of leaded gasoline has been decreased, the levels have not significantly changed during the sampling period. Probably other sources like fossil fuel emission and refuse incinerator will be potential contributors. The seasonal variation showed that Pb concentration significantly increased in the winter season and decreased in the summer season. The size distributions of Pb were observed to be unimodal distribution of the 1.1~2.1 $mu extrm{m}$ sixte ranges in the winter and 0.65~1.1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in the summer.

  • Authors Investigated the particulate size distribution in work environment of Banwol and Changwon industry complex. Size distributions of particles exposured to workers in welding and in grounding process were evaluated by personal cascade impactors. Personal air samplers with personal cascade impactor were attached to the workers. The mass median diameter measured in welding sites were 0.3 to 3.BUm and in grinding sites were 1.5 to 2.6htn. Respirable matter fractions were ranged 32.67 to 65.055. Respirable matter fractions were calculated from the sixte distribution data by the respirable particle mass of the ACGIH criteria. The study relating to characteristics of particle of other industries and particulate sixte distribution is more needed in the near future
