Recently, the birth rate of congenitally anomalic babies is increasing in Korea. But there are few studies and articles in nursing field. So nurses are having difficulties in caring those mothers. This study is to reveal experiences of the mothers with congenitally anomalic babies. Subjects were six and data were gathered by interviews. Data were analyzed by Giorgi's method. Mother's responses were organized into five categories-shock, sadness, expectation, attribution and loss of confidence on future pregnancies. Loss of confidence on future pregnancies were categories which were not found in foreign articles. Based on the result of this study, author recommend that another studies which deal only same anomaly will be done, and genetic counseling system will be organized in hospitals.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to elucidate the themes involved in a nursing experience of caring for extremely low birth weight infants (ELBWIs) in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Methods: Interviews with 6 nurses in various positions and observations in a level III NICU were conducted. The transcribed interview contents and observational notes were reviewed to analyze the data and conceptualize major themes. Results: Three major themes were identified: the fears expressed by the nurses regarding taking care of ELBWIs, reasons for persistent fears, and overcoming fears and gaining intuition. Nurses were afraid of the following factors: the physical fragility of the infants; the possibility of developing disabilities in the future; and the rapid changes in infants' physical condition. These fears were reduced when nurses had developed intuition and confidence in taking care of ELBWIs through various situational experiences. Conclusion: NICU nurses may benefit from obtaining more opportunities to participate in various learning experiences with simulated nursing situations in a variety of patient groups. Applying knowledge and skills into various nursing situations in an integrative way may contribute to enhancing nurses' confidence in nursing practice.
Purpose: This study was to explore the hope structures of the newly diagnosed cancer patients by examining the relationships between hope and the three concepts of 'Personal Spirit', 'Risk' and 'Authentic Caring' which composed the multidimensions of the Nekolaichuk and Bruera's hope model. Methods: Data was collected via survey from 32 newly diagnosed cancer patients. The perceived meaning of life (PML) for 'personal spirit', perceived confidence in cure (PCC) for 'risk', and perceived family support (PFS) and perceived support from medical team (PSM) for 'authentic caring' were adapted from the definitions of the concepts in the model. Hope, PML, and PCC were measured with VAS. PFS and PSM were measured with Korean version of 'Cobb's family support scale', which was modified by Kang. Pearson correlation coefficients were used to identify the relationships among the concepts. Results: The significant relationships were revealed between hope and PCC (p<.001), hope and PML (p<.001), PML and PCC (p<.001), PFS and PML (p=.030), and PSM and PML (p=.047). Conclusion: The newly diagnosed cancer patients experience hope in different ways. The cancer patients' hope immediate after diagnosis, however, is most likely to be experienced as seeking balance between uncertainty about cancer treatment and the meaning of life.
Professional nurse Autonomy is an essential attribute of a discipline striving for full professional status. Purpose: This study was to clarify the concept of professional nurse autonomy to provide basic data needed for development of professional autonomy enhancing strategies. Method: This study use the process of Walker & Avante's concept analysis based on Wade's research (1999), and field data of 21 nurses. Results: Professional nurse autonomy is defined as competency and creative performance of the professional nurse in practice, to decide independently or interdependently nursing activities and to be had accountable for results of decisions, that reflect advocacy and caring. It was identified that critical attributes include responsible discretionary decision making, collegial interdependence, initiative, creativity, and caring, advocacy, cooperative relationship with clients, receptive capacity to others, activeness, self confidence, and devotion and responsibility to their profession. Antecedents include personal characteristics, educational background, experience and structural characteristics that enhance professional nurse autonomy. Consequences of professional nurse autonomy are feelings of self-efficacy, empowerment, job satisfaction, reduction of intention to leave their job. Conclusion: According to these results, it is recommended that the curriculum provides an environment for learning professional nurse autonomy, and that is used as basic data to develope strategies to enhance professional autonomy of nurse in practice and it's effects
The purposes of this research were to add to the developing knowledge base about the burden and social support of grandmothers involved with caring grandchildren, and to examine whether a significant relationship exists between their burden and social support perceived by the grandmothers. A convenience sample of 102 grandmothers was recruited from five collective apartment areas at a small city in Korea. The criteria of selection of sample were that the grandmothers were raising their grandchildren under the age of 36 months for 3 months or longer at own or gandchildren's home. The instruments used were a 15-item multidemensional burden scale and a 8-item social support scale. Both scales were self report, five point Likert type scales. The higher the score, the higher the degree of burden and social support. Data was collected by two prepared research assistants visiting subjects' home from December 10, 1998 to March 20, 1999. The collected data were analysed using mean, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation coefficient computed by SPSS software. The results were as follows. 1. In the age distribution of grandmothers, the over half of subjects(58.8%) were under 60 years old. The majority(69.6%) of subjects were married at time of data collection. 79(77.5%) of the sample reported that their perceived health status was good or over. 2. The burden of the grandmothers was not scored high, and the item means on burden scale were ranged from 2.26 to 4.19 out of 5. 'Short of private time'(4.19) had the highest score, followed by 'fatigue'(3.92), 'short of rest'(3.75), and 'short of contact with friends and neighbors'(3.62). The lowest item was 'family doesn't help me'(2.26), and followed by 'family doesn't understand me'(2.33), 'angry with family' (2.43), and 'angry while caring for grandchild'(2.60). 3. There were significant relationships between the burden and present health status(p<.01), childcaring confidence(p<.01), and motive of caring(p<.01). 4. The score of social support, was ranging from 3.61 to 4.01 out of 5. 5. The relationship between burden and social support was found to be correlated negatively. The relationship was statistically significant(γ= - .2833, p<.001). In conclusion, it was found that the burden was not high and burden of grandmothers caring grandchildren was correlated negatively to social support. Therefore, these results provide a basis for developing a nursing intervention to reduce the burden of grandmothers.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a newly developed Introduction to Clinical Nursing (ICN) program on critical thinking skills, communication competence, self-efficacy, and clinical performance self-confidence in nursing students in their third year. Methods: One group pre-test and post-test design was used with three data collection time points (pre-test, post-test1 and post-test2). Participants were 74 third year nursing students approaching their first clinical practicum. The new program included (a) simulated clinical encounters regarding situations of assessing hospitalized patents and caring for patients with oxygenation needs, (b) objective structured clinical examination of skills, (c) lectures, and (e) field trips. Data were analyzed using paired t-tests. Results: After the ICN course, critical thinking skills(significant only between pretest and post-test2), communication competence, and clinical performance self-confidence improved significantly (p<.05). There was no improvement in the self-efficacy total score but there was significant improvement in the subscale, self-regulatory efficacy. Conclusions: The study results indicate that the ICN course may be effective in increasing critical thinking skills, communication competence, and clinical performance self-confidence in nursing students. However, the effect size was very small and modifications of this program should be considered to develop more cost-effective educational programs.

This study was conducted to confirm the meaning and essence of the interpersonal caring experience of nursing students who participated in an enneagram-based care intervention program. The subjects of the study were nine second-year students in the Department of Nursing at a university located in the region, and data were collected from April 25 to August 26, 2022, through interview records, statements, and reflection journals. The collected data were analyzed using Colaizzi's phenomenological method. Results, It appeared in three categories and 10 topic groups 'Recognition through sharing and listening', 'Acceptance through comfort and forgiveness', 'Praise and giving hope through participation and companionship in daily life', While writing a person care reflection journal, you can realize the meaning of care through critical reflection, understand the essence of the person care experience, and confirm the vivid person care experience, and develop the ability to care for people through in-depth reflection on personal experiences, feelings, and deep understanding. As this improved and internalized care, confidence in one's own ability to care increased. Therefore, it is believed that the experience of caring for people based on the Enneagram can be confirmed, the results can be used for learning, and it will be used as educational material to perform people care, contributing to the development of people care education.
Purpose: This study aimed to provide an overview of the prevalence of the complications of a gastrostomy or a gastrojejunostomy with a low-profile gastric tube in children. The study also examined the effect of presence of the gastrostomy tube on the prevalence of complications. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, parents were invited to complete an online questionnaire. Children aged 0-16 years with a low-profile gastrostomy or gastrojejunostomy tube were included in the study. Results: A total of 67 complete surveys were conducted. The mean age of the included children was seven years. The most common complications during the past week, were skin irritation (35.8%), abdominal pain (34.3%), and the formation of granulation tissue (29.9%). The most common complications during the past six months were skin irritation (47.8%), vomiting (43.4%), and abdominal pain (38.8%). Most complications occurred within the first year after gastrojejunostomy placement and gradually decreased as the duration since the placement of the gastrojejunostomy tube increased. The prevalence of severe complications was rare. Parental confidence in caring for the gastrostomy positively correlated with increases in the duration of the gastrostomy tube. Even so, parental confidence in the care of the gastrostomy tube was reduced in some parents more than a year after its placement. Conclusion: The prevalence of gastrojejunostomy complications in children is relatively high. The incidences of severe complications after the placement of a gastrojejunostomy tube were rare in this study. A lack of confidence in the care of the gastrostomy tube was noted in some parents more than a year after its placement.
Due to the plethora of political, economic, and social challenges experienced on a global scale in the 21st century, students need to be concerned with more than their immediate surroundings (Johnson, 2005). When implemented in an educational setting, topics encompassing social justice may provide students with the confidence and skills to become "reflective, moral, caring, and active citizens in a troubled world" (Banks and Banks, 2009, p.5). The purpose of this article was to provide examples of undergraduate lessons focused on sweatshop conditions within three time periods of United States history that incorporate social justice into the course curriculum. By implementing social justice lessons into the curriculum, students can engage in critical reading, writing, and thinking about injustices faced by society. Girded with knowledge of past oppression within the apparel industry, students may become actively engaged in challenging social injustices in our world.
The purpose of this study was to develop a mother-infant interaction intervention program based on enhancing sensitivity to infant cues. Subjects were 9 infants, 3-26 months of age and their mothers, 6 Korean, 2 Mongolian and 1 North Korean. The intervention program was based on the Nursing Child Assessment Satellite Training model(NCAST; Barnard, 1994); data were analyzed by Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and Mann-Whitney Test. Results were that the interaction score and infant caring confidence score of the intervention group was higher than the non-intervention group. Mother's sensitive responses to infant cues enhanced the degree of mother-infant interaction.
