Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of nurses' psycho-social health and social support from colleagues on patient caring ability. Methods: A cross-sectional survey design was used and the participants in this study were 422 nurses from 3 general hospitals. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire and collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple regression analysis with the SAS 9.4 program. Results: Total mean score for psychosocial health was $3.15{\pm}0.57$, for social support from colleagues, $3.43{\pm}0.55$, and for caring ability, $4.04{\pm}0.53$. Psychosocial health, social support from colleagues, and married status were identified as significant factors influencing patient caring ability. Conclusion: Findings from this study indicate that psychosocial health and social support from colleagues are related to patient caring ability, and thus, to improve nurses' caring ability for patient and for self, it is important to create a work environment that keeps nurses healthy and promotes collaboration with colleagues.
Caring is essential ability for nursing provider. The purpose of this study was to identify impact of self-reflection, ego state and transformational leadership on caring ability in nursing students. A convenience sample of 199 nursing students was obtained from a university in Gyeonggi Province. Data was analyzed using Pearson correlation and multiple regression. The result of multiple regression indicate that self-reflection(${\beta}=0.10$, p<.05), transformational leadership(${\beta}=0.13$, p<.05), NP(${\beta}=0.27$, p<.001), FC(${\beta}=0.22$, p<.001), CP(${\beta}=-0.24$, p<.001) and AC (${\beta}=-0.35$, p<.001) were the most consistent predictors of caring ability and explained 54.0%. These results are expected to be used as a basic data for the development of a convergence education program that can enhance self - reflection, positive aspect of ego state and transformational leadership in order to improve caring ability of nursing college students.
Since nursing is carried out in a relationship between nurses and nursing subjects in a social context, the social problem solving ability of nursing college students is very important. The purpose of this study was to identify impact of self-leadership, caring ability and self-efficacy on social problem solving ability in nursing student's. The subjects of this study were 203 nursing college students from a university. Data was analyzed using Pearson correlation and multiple regression. The result of multiple regression indicate that caring ability(${\beta}=0.39$, p<.001) self-efficacy(${\beta}=0.28$, p<.001), self-leadership(${\beta}=0.23$, p<.001) were the most consistent predictors of social problem solving ability and explained 53.0%. It is suggested to establish an autonomy-based program and feedback system and to develop a convergence education program to balance cognitive and emotional aspects.

The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate a dietary education program to improve the caring ability and multicultural acceptance of middle school students. Based on the instructional system design of ADDIE model, the dietary education program was developed to contain five sessions including four theoretical lectures and one lab session. Visual thinking technique was used to train students to express their thoughts and emotion by writing and drawing. The dietary education program was conducted for four weeks (from November 19 to December 14, 2018) at a middle school located in Seoul on a total of 69 middle school students, out of which 34 were assigned to an experimental group and 35 were assigned to a control group. Separate paired t-test were conducted for the experimental group and the control group, respectively, to determine the changes in caring ability and multicultural acceptance scores before and after the dietary education. There were significant increases in caring ability (dietary-, emotional-, behavioral- and cognitive caring) and multicultural acceptance (diversity, relationship and universality) scores among the experimental group after the dietary program. However, no differences were observed among the control group. The results indicate that the dietary education program can be an effective tool to improve caring ability and multicultural acceptance of middle school students.

Purpose: This study aimed at (a) developing an instructional model of creative thinking education on the problem-based learning method (C-PBL) in undergraduate nursing curriculum at one University, and (b) examining its effect on nursing students' level of creativity and outcomes from problem-based learning. Methods: The C-PBL model was implemented on 43 juniors of the experimental group with a 30 hour-nursing class during one semester. The control group, with 54 seniors, received 4 hours of problem based learning training in an adult nursing class. Pre-and post-tests were done with the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking for creative thinking ability, the Integrated Creativity Instrument for creative motivation and attitudes, the Problem Solving Competency questionnaire, and the Self-Directed Learning Instrument. Results: The C-PBL model was developed using a caring situation scenario to solve nursing problems with 3 training steps of 'encountering a patient in a caring situation', 'exploring nursing knowledge', and 'designing creative caring beyond given knowledge'. Between the experimental group and the control group, there were significant differences in creativity (p<.010), problem-solving ability (p<.010), and self-directed ability (p<.010). Conclusion: This C-PBL method could contribute in increasing creative competency as well as problem-solving ability for nursing students.

Data were collected using a self-reported questionnaire and were analyzed with the IBM SPSS WIN 19.0 program. Results: Nurses' terminal care performance was significantly related with suffering experience, empathy ability and caring behaviors. Significant predictors for terminal care performance were their department, empathy ability and caring behaviors. These factors explained 43.52% of the variance in terminal care performance of clinical nurses. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of young children's empathic ability and interpersonal competence on caring behavior in forming relationships. Subjects included 152 4- and 5-year-old children attending a kindergarten located in a micropolitan city. Questionnaires required self-reporting by teachers, and were used to investigate young children's caring behavior, empathic ability and interpersonal competence in forming relationships. Data was analyzed using t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficient analysis and Stepwise-Regression analysis. Results were as follows: First, young children's caring behavior was negatively correlated with empathic ability and positively associated with interpersonal competence in forming relationships. Second, young children's emotional behavior as each domain of caring behavior were predictable variables for explaining the relative effect of the social reactivity and explaining the relative effect of relationship formation. Active behaviors were predictable variables for explaining the relative effect of follow-up instructions, but negatively affected mental burden. Normative behaviors were predictable variables for explaining the relative effect of social reactivity, but negatively predictable variables for explaining the relative effect of the relationship formation and mental burden. Value-contributing behavior in each domain of caring behavior were predictable variables for explaining the relative effect of the positive interaction.

Purpose: This study aimed to develop and evaluate the effects of an empathy education program for undergraduate nursing students. Methods: The study employed a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. A total of 46 nursing students were voluntarily recruited by convenience sampling from senior nursing students from the nursing department of K college in I city, Korea. Participants were divided into two groups, an experimental group of 23 and a control group of 23. The experimental intervention (empathy education program) was conducted from April 19 to May 6, 2016 and consisted of 150-minute sessions, twice a week, for 3 weeks for a total of 15 hours. Results: Participants demonstrated improvements in perspective taking in cognitive empathy, improved empathic concern in emotional empathy, and improved communicative empathy. Analysis of reflective writings identified four theme clusters regarding communicative empathy: improvement of empathic expression, experiencing comfort and healing, improvement of interpersonal relationships, and experience of conflict resolution. Improved interpersonal ability and caring were also identified. Conclusion: The empathy education program improved cognitive, emotional and communicative empathy, and interpersonal skills and care, which are all necessary qualities for nurses.
