To protect the patient's internal organs when a patient with cardiovascular disease occurs, it is important to reduce the elapsed time by providing emergency medical services. Decisions for conducting cardiopulmonary resuscitation are mainly made using the carotid palpation method, which directs the pulse of the carotid artery, which can diagnose the patient's condition according to one's own subject and cause cerebral blood flow to be blocked by excessive pressure in the carotid due to the weaken cardiopulmonary function. In this study, we developed a multimodal patch-type probe based on multi-channel ultrasound Doppler pairs and oxygen saturation measurement modules which can monitor cardiopulmonary functions. From the in-vivo experiments, the developed probe can be utilized as a novel tool that can increase the survival rate of cardiovascular disease patients by objectively monitoring the cardiopulmonary function of the patient quantitatively and promptly in an emergency situation.
Auscultation of heart sounds using a stethoscope is the basic method to diagnose the cardiovascular disease and observation of abnormalities. However, the heart sound transmitted to the ear through the stethoscope is greatly affected by internal sounds such as organ movement or breathing. In addition, the user's experience significantly influences the accuracy of the auscultation result. Therefore, in this paper, we developed a wearable device that simultaneously measures heart sound and PPG signals for cardiac condition monitoring. The structure of the proposed device is designed to simultaneously measure heart sound and PPG signals when worn on a finger and placed on the chest. A prototype was implemented according to the design structure, and it was confirmed that the performance of measurements and collection for physiological signals was excellent through experiments.
Objectives: This study was conducted to identify the intervention effects on health efficacy and health knowledge related to health behaviors for improving cardiovascular health in elementary school children. Methods: A repeated measure, pre-post-test design was used to identify the intervention effect on health efficacy and health knowledge among 5th grade school children. Intervention consisted of a curriculum classroom intervention and parent intervention. Health efficacy, health knowledge, and perceived parental monitoring were measured for testing intervention effect. A sample of 219 participants completed a baseline pre-test and two tests during intervention and after intervention from March to July 2004. Results: Mental health efficacy improved significantly from baseline test to the test after intervention (F = 32.88, p < 0.0001). Physical health efficacy also significantly increased during intervention (F = 50.51, p < 0.0001), but did not significantly change after parent intervention. Health knowledge increased significantly from baseline test to the test after education (F =10.23, p < 0.0001), but decreased after parent intervention. Perceived parental monitoring had a significant impact on mental health efficacy and physical health efficacy. Conclusion: The findings support school-based cardiovascular health promotion intervention as effective in improving health efficacy and health knowledge. Parental influence should also be considered to maintain improved health efficacy and health knowledge by thinking process in the intervention for elementary school children.
This study reviewed useful aspects of the intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography among the patients in whom heart surgery were undertaken between January 1996 and July 1996 at St.Pauls hospital, Medical College of Catholic University, Seoul, Korea. During that period, 61 patients were operated on because of valvular heart disease(25 patients), coronary artery disease(22 patients), congenital heart disease(13 patients), and combined coronary artery disease and valvular heart disease(1 patient). Two patients(1 redo-VSD and 1 valvular heart diease) needed repeated aortic cross clamping and complementary procedures because of incomplete initial procedures. There was no incidence of air embolism. We could observe significant relationship of cardiac output monitoring methods either by thermodilution technique and transesophageal echocardiography by linear regression analysis(p<0.001). We tested myocardial response(percentage of systolic wall thickness, PSWT) with low dose dobutamine challenge to predict post-CABG myocardial perfusion. And the test showed statistically significant resp.onse(sensitivity 76%, specificity 94.7%, positive predictive value 95%, negative predictive value 75%). These results suggest that cardiac surgeon could draw more benefits by intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography.
From February 1985 to May 1989, 124 cases of cardiac surgery were performed under cardiopulmonary bypass at Dae-Jeon Eul-Ji General Hospital with the overall mortality of 8.06 We obtained relatively a higher mortality than other hospitals. The reasons are advanced disease status, inadequate preoperative diagnosis, lack of experience of surgeons in open heart surgery, lack of numbers and qualities of monitoring device and ventilator, and frequent migration of medico-surgical team. Most of the reasons are specific to the condition of the private hospital. The purpose of this article is going to make better preoperative and postoperative result by reviewing experienced cases with related articles.
The incidences of cardiovascular diseases are rapidly increasing worldwide. The electrocardiogram (ECG) is a test to detect and monitor heart issues via electric signals in the heart. Presently, detecting heart disease in real time is not only possible but also easy using the myDAQ data acquisition device and LabVIEW. Hence, this paper proposes a system that can acquire ECG signals in real time, as well as detect heart abnormalities, and through light-emitting diodes (LEDs) it can simultaneously reveal whether a particular waveform is in range or otherwise. The main hardware components used in the system are the myDAQ device, Vernier adapter, and ECG sensor, which are connected to ECG monitoring electrodes for data acquisition from the human body, while further processing is accomplished using the LabVIEW software. In the Results section, the proposed system is compared with some other studies based on the features detected. This system is tested on 10 randomly selected people, and the results are presented in the Simulation Results section.

Cardiovascular disease has been the leading cause of death among patients with chronic renal failure. Many reports have been described that homocysteine is one of the independent risk factor to the occulsive vascular disease. In this study, HPLC/FLD (high performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detector) technique was used to measure homocysteine level in patients with chronic renal failure and normal control group. The detection limit and recovery of total plasma homocysteine using HPLC/FLD were 98.6$\pm$5.8% and 0.2 nmol/ml, respectively. The linearity of this method was established in concentration range of 2~50 nmol/ml (correlation coefficient=0.9997). The concentrations of total plasma homocysteine were 6.81$\pm$1.54 nmol/ml and 27.28$\pm$14.94 nmol/ml in normal control (n=20) and patient group (n=90), respectively (p<0.05). In this study, the HPLC/FLD method showed high sensitivity and reproducibility for a routine clinical laboratory testing. Moreover determination of homocysteine level in plasma might be useful for a biochemical marker for predicting the cardiovascular diseases and for monitoring of therapeutic effect of lowering homocysteine in patients with chronic renal failure.
Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) is an autosomal dominant neurocutaneous disorder, which can affect different organs or systems of the body, including the cardiovascular system. One of the more serious aspects of the disease relates to arterial involvement. In particular, renal artery stenosis is one of the most common vascular abnormalities in patients with NF-1, and the manifestations vary, ranging from no symptoms to end-stage renal failure. Treatment usually consists of antihypertensive drugs, percutaneous transluminal angioplasty, or surgery. Other causes of hypertension should be ruled out and the patient followed up for close monitoring and proper management. We report a case of bilateral renal artery stenosis and hypertension in a patient with moyamoya disease associated with neurofibromatosis type 1. This report discusses the literature available on the current subject, its clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment.
Objectives: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic led to increased mortality rates. To assess this impact, this ecological study aimed to estimate the excess death counts in southern Iran. Methods: The study obtained weekly death counts by linking the National Death Registry and Medical Care Monitoring Center repositories. The P-score was initially estimated using a simple method that involved calculating the difference between the observed and expected death counts. The interrupted time series analysis was then used to calculate the mean relative risk (RR) of death during the first year of the pandemic. Results: Our study found that there were 5571 excess deaths from all causes (P-score=33.29%) during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, with 48.03% of these deaths directly related to COVID-19. The pandemic was found to increase the risk of death from all causes (RR, 1.26; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.19 to 1.33), as well as in specific age groups such as those aged 35-49 (RR, 1.21; 95% CI, 1.12 to 1.32), 50-64 (RR, 1.38; 95% CI, 1.28 to 1.49), and ≥65 (RR, 1.29; 95% CI, 1.12 to 1.32) years old. Furthermore, there was an increased risk of death from cardiovascular diseases (RR, 1.17; 95% CI, 1.11 to 1.22). Conclusions: There was a 26% increase in the death count in southern Iran during the COVID-19 pandemic. More than half of these excess deaths were not directly related to COVID-19, but rather other causes, with cardiovascular diseases being a major contributor.
