  • Three neonates with congenital diaphragmatic eventration underwent intrathoracic operation had marked improvements in symptoms postoperatively. Two were one day of ages, one was 1 month of age, and they were all female and had other congenital abnormalities of lung hypoplasia, cleft palate, nasal polyps and neonatal hepatitis. The right diaphragm was more affected than left as 2:1. The repair for diaphragmatic eventration was performed successfully by plication of remnant diaphragm, and there were no complications postoperatively.

  • Anomalous systemic venous return to the right atrium is clinically innocuous and cause no functional disturbances or physiologic abnormalities by themselves and consequently require no treatment but may be surgical importance. We experienced a case of adult TOF combined with anomalous systemic venous drainage. Rudimentary right SVC with draining left sided vertical vein and IVC with separately drained left vein was revealed at operation time. With the bicaval cannulation, large sucker was used for drainage of blood from the left hepatic vein. Postoperative angiocardiogram showed above findings and combined double inferior vena cava at lumbar level.

  • Although Behcet`s disease, characterized by oro-genital ulceration and ocular abnormalities, is rare and unfamiliar disease to thoracic surgeon, one must remember that it can cause serious complications on the vascular system such as thrombophlebitis, thrombotic obstuction and aneurysm. We report a case of multiple arterial aneurysms with Behcet`s disease. This 31 year-old female had five times surgical interventions during short period[19 months]. 6 aneurysms were developed in this case, 3 were spontaneous aneurysms, 2 were anastomotic aneurysms and 1 was false aneurysm due to arterial puncture.

  • Three component velocity measurements with a refractive index-matching technique was used to investigate the flow characteristics in the atrio-pulmomnary (AP) Fontan connection under the steady flow condition. A strong swirl was observed in the extra-cardiac conduit and the main pulmonary artery (MPA). Maximum velocity magnitude in the MPA was about 0.8 m/s near the posterior wall at 6 liter/min. Swirling motion of the flow as well as geometric abnormalities of the connection are important factors in energy loss across Fontan connections.

  • Kawasaki disease, an acute febrile illness which primarily affects in children under the age of six, was first described by Tomisaku Kawasaki in 1967. It has been reported that Kawasaki disease is probable driven by abnormalities of the immune system after an infectious insult, but this has not been confirmed. It mainly affects small and medium-sized arteries, particularly the coronary arteries. Deaths may occur at any time with cardiovascular complications. The early recognition and treatment with follow-up evaluation for the coronary arterial lesion is very important in a case of Kawasaki disease.

  • Isolated bronchogenic cysts of the diaphragm are rare abnormalities. They are usually asymptomatic unless secondarily infected or large enough to cause compression of vital structures. The patient was a 31-year-old man and had no symptoms except mild postprandial epigastric discomfort. The chest X-ray and chest C-T examination revealed a mediastinal mass at the left cardio-vertebro-phrenic angle. We performed the operation under the impression of solid mass at mediastinum. We revealed that the mass was bronchogenic cyst in diaphragm. Therefore we report this case with review of literatures.

  • Pericardial cysts are rare benign anomalies generally discovered as incidental findings on radiographic images. Rarely, pericardial cysts cause symptoms and may lead to complications. A 56-year-old woman presented to the emergency department for mild chest pain. A cardiovascular and respiratory examination revealed no abnormalities, while a chest X-ray and subsequent thoracic computed tomography (CT) showed a pericardial cyst. The patient refused both percutaneous treatment and thoracic surgery. Three years later, a thoracic CT scan showed that the pericardial cyst had disappeared. Although the spontaneous resolution of these lesions is rare, this article highlights the possibility of conservative management in select cases.

  • Heart rate variability is significantly associated with cardiovascular complications in various neurological disorders with cardiac impairment. Measures of spontaneous heart rate variability might be different from provocating tests of heart rate variability such as deep breathing and Valsava maneuver. Methods for analysis are divided into time domain methods and frequency domain methods. There are standard deviation of NN interval, standard deviation of average NN interval, root mean square of the successive differences, NN50, and pNN50 in time domain methods. Frequency domain bands can be divided into very low, low, and high frequency. Each variables are influenced by sympathetic and/or parasympathetic activity.

  • Background: Behçet disease is a chronic inflammatory disorder with a varying etiology. Herein, we report the involvement of peripheral veins in Behçet disease and discuss the treatment thereof. Methods: Thirty-four patients with venous involvement in vasculo-Behçet disease were retrospectively analyzed over 15 years. We reviewed the clinical manifestations, treatment choices, and complications of these patients. Results: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) was observed in 24 patients (70.59%) and varicose veins in 19 (52.94%). Immunosuppressive treatment was administered to all patients due to the pathological feature of vein wall inflammation. In patients with DVT, anticoagulation therapy was also used, but post-thrombotic syndrome was observed in all patients along with chronic luminal changes. Eleven patients with isolated varicose veins underwent surgery; although symptoms and lesions recurred in half of these patients, no cases of secondary DVT occurred. Conclusion: When DVT was diagnosed in patients with Behçet disease, there was no cure for the lesions. Ultrasonographic abnormalities were observed in all patients, and post-thrombotic syndrome remained to varying degrees. In cases of isolated varicose veins in patients with Behçet disease, DVT did not occur after surgical treatment. If the activity of Behçet disease is controlled, surgical correction of varicose veins is preferable.
