  • Regeneration methods of oximes, hydrazones, and N,N-dimethylhydrazones to the related carbonyl compounds were effected using various dicarbonyl compounds which are activated with electron withdrawing substituents such as trifluoromethylated $\beta-diketones$, $\beta-acylpyruvates$, and $\alpha-diketones$ via an equilibrium exchange reaction. The chemical transformations of the dicarbonyl compounds in the exchange reaction were investigated by various spectroscopic methods.

  • This study was attempted to investigate indoor air quality of a wooden house. Emission characteristics of carbonyl compounds from indoors whose interiors were finished using ecofriendly materials were detected. From the results of the examination, the carbonyl compounds mostly consisted of formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and hexaldehyde. Especially, formaldehyde accounted for the largest portion of the compounds at 25.6~30.5%. All the rooms except for R2-2 contained formaldehyde less than criteria of indoor air quality of newly-constructed houses. In addition, all the rooms except for room R1-3, contained acetaldehyde more than the level of $48{\mu}g/m^3$ recommended by Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. As a results of the different wall covering, the room R1-1 of Hwangto emitted relatively higher levels of carbonyl compounds than the room R2-1 of phytoncide. In addition, the room R2-2 of the bamboo charcoal panels emitted more carbonyl compounds than the room R1-2. The living room R1-3 of Japanese cypress (Cryptomeria Japonica) emitted lower levels of carbonyl compounds than other rooms.

  • Seven potentially harmful bifunctional carbonyls were measured in particulate and gaseous phases at a roadside site and a suburban site in an area about 30 km north-northwest from Tokyo metropolitan area in the Kanto region in Japan. For the first time, these compounds were measured in both phases with a time resolution of 2 h. We found that wind direction is an important parameter that affects the collection of these compounds near the source, and it can cover the effects of other important variables. Our results confirmed that motor vehicles and especially diesel fuelled vehicles are important sources of these compounds. Photochemical generation is also an important source of these compounds in the gaseous phase. Transportation from the urban area is also important, particularly in the aerosol phase.

  • The new MPV-type reagents, B-acetoxydiisopinocampheylborane ($Ipc _2$BOAc) and B-trifluoroacetoxydiisopinocampheylborane $(Ipc _2BO _2CCF _3)$, have been prepared and their reducing characteristics in the reduction of carbonyl compound have been examined in order to find out a new reducing system with unique applicability in organic synthesis. In general, the reactivity of $Ipc _2BO _2CCF _3$ appears to be stronger than that of $Ipc _2$BOAc, presumably due to the acidity increase by the electron-withdrawing fluorine-substituent. Both reagents show an excellent selectivity in 1,2-reduction of $\alpha,\beta$-unsaturatedcarbonyl compounds and in competitive reduction between structurally different carbonyl compounds. In addition, $Ipc _2BO _2CCF _3$ shows interesting features in the stereoreduction of cyclic ketones.

  • The study is about variations in Carbonyl compounds concentration within apartment buildings according to pre-residence and residence. We consecutively investigated indoor air pollutants in 120 households in 6 cities at pre-residence and residence. Carbonyl compounds were collected using the 2,4-DNPH cartridge and were analyzed using HPLC. The carbonyls concentration of indoor air in the new apartments before occupation measured formadlehyde($76.0\;{\mu}g/m^3$), acetone($85.9\;{\mu}g/m^3$), acetaldehyde($13.8\;{\mu}g/m^3$). The carbonyls concentration of indoor air in the new apartments after occupation measured formadlehyde($233.1\;{\mu}g/m^3$), acetone($128.9\;{\mu}g/m^3$), acetaldehyde($29.8\;{\mu}g/m^3$), respectively. As a result, the mean concentration of carbonyl compounds within the pre-occupancy stage was lower than those of residence.
