Influence of Heating Rate and Temperature on Carbon Structure and Porosity of Activated Carbon Spheres from Resole-type Phenolic Beads

  • Activated carbon spheres (ACS) were prepared at different heating rates by carbonization of the resole-type phenolic beads (PB) at $950^{\circ}C$ in $N_2$ atmosphere followed by activation of the resultant char at different temperatures for 5 h in $CO_2$ atmosphere. Influence of heating rate on porosity and temperature on carbon structure and porosity of ACS were investigated. Effect of heating rate and temperature on porosity of ACS was also studied from adsorption isotherms of nitrogen at 77 K using BET method. The results revealed that ACS have exhibited a BET surface area and pore volume greater than $2260\;m^2/g$ and $1.63\;cm^3/g$ respectively. The structural characteristics variation of ACS with different temperature was studied using Raman spectroscopy. The results exhibited that amount of disorganized carbon affects both the pore structure and adsorption properties of ACS. ACS were also evaluated for structural information using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy. ACS were evaluated for chemical composition using CHNS analysis. The ACS prepared different temperatures became more carbonaceous material compared to carbonized material. ACS have possessed well-developed pores structure which were verified by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). SEM micrographs also exhibited that ACS have possessed well-developed micro- and meso-pores structure and the pore size of ACS increased with increasing activation temperature.

Studies on ILSS and Acoustic Emission Properties of Carbon-Carbon Composites

  • In this work, the carbon fibers-reinforced carbon matrix composites made with different carbon char yields of phenolic resin matrix have been characterized by mechanical flexural tests for acoustic emission properties. The composites had been fabricated in the form of two-dimensional polyacrylonitrile based carbon fibers during the carbonization process. It was found that the composites made with the carbon char yield-rich of resin matrix result in better mechanical interfacial properties, i.e., the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the composites. The data obtained from the acoustic emission monitored appeared to show that the composites made with carbon char yield-rich were also more ductile. From the acoustic emission results, the primary composite failure was largely depended on the debonding at interfaces between fibers and matrix. The interlaminar shear strengths of the composites were correlated with the acoustic emission results.

Study on the Fabrication and the Properties of C/C Composite from Clutter Chopped Carbon Fiber by Warmer-Molding Technology

  • Carbon/Carbon composite was been manufactured by the technology of warmer-molding process of clutter chopped carbon fiber, using phenolic resin as an adhesive. The degree of graphitization, the microstructure and the friction properties were studied. The results show that the clutter chopped carbon fiber fully scatter in the Carbon/Carbon composite and the degree of graphitization of phenolic resin can reach up to 86.2%, this matrix carbon can form the continuous and stable graphitic thin film on the friction surface during braking process so that the composite has fine friction properties and low wear rate.

  • The effect of pre-carbonization condition on the mechanical properties of nonwoven needle-punched carbon/phenolic composite was studied. The nonwoven Oxi-PAN felt was pre-carbonized at different temperature. The pre-carbonized Oxi-PAN felt was needle-punched and then carbonized. Needle-punched nonwoven carbon preforms were formed into composites with phenol resin. The tensile and flexural strengths showed maximum value with pre-carbonization temperature of $500^{\circ}C$. Compared with the non-pre-carbonized composite, the mechanical properties were slightly improved.

  • 페놀수지에 함침된 탄소나노튜브 (CNT)의 최적 분산제조공정은 전기저항 측정으로 구해졌으며, 플라즈마 처리된 탄소섬유와 CNT-페놀수지 나노복합재료간의 계면특성이 전기-미세역학시험법에 의해 연구되었다. 탄소섬유의 젖음성은 플라즈마 처리 후에 현격하게 증가되었다. 탄소섬유와 CNT-페놀수지 나노복합재료의 표면에너지는 Wilhelmy 플레이트 시험법으로 측정되었다. 탄소섬유 표면의 활성화로 인하여 플라즈마 처리 후 전진 접촉각은 $65^{\circ}$에서 $28^{\circ}$로 감소되었다. 이는 정적 접촉각과 상호 일치함을 보여 주었다. 플라즈마 처리된 탄소섬유와 CNT-페놀수지 나노복합재료간의 접착일은 플라즈마 처리전보다 증가하였다. 또한, 계면전단강도와 겉보기 강성도 탄소섬유에 대한 플라즈마 처리로 증가하였다.

  • 탄소섬유강화플라스틱(CFRP)의 홀 가공 시 chip이 발생된다. 이때 발생되는 chip은 단순 폐기용 차원이 아닌 미세탄소섬유와 에폭시의 조성으로 이루어져 있다. Chip을 강화재로 활용하기 위해서는 탄소섬유만의 조성을 이루어야 고분자 기지와 계면접착력이 증가될 수 있다. Chip 내 탄소섬유의 길이를 일정하게 하기 위해 막자 사발을 이용한 절단 과정 후 $H_2O_2$를 이용한 표면처리를 하여 탄소섬유에 붙어있는 에폭시를 제거하였다. Chip을 이용하여 페놀수지를 기지로 한 페놀복합재료를 제조하였으며, 내열성 및 난연성 재료로 활용 가능성을 평가하였다. 기존의 페놀보다 표면처리를 한 chip복합재료가 기계적, 열적 물성이 향상됨을 확인하였으며, 젖음성 평가를 이용하여 표면물성에 따른 재료의 물성을 평가하였다. 불균질한 표면 조성에 의해 표면 거칠기가 달라지기 때문에 페놀복합재료의 접촉각이 증가되었다. 난연성 평가는 ASTM D635-06 방법으로 수행하였다. 평가결과, chip의 첨가 및 표면처리의 영향에 의해 난연성이 향상되었다.

  • 고체 로켓 추진기관 노즐의 내열재로 사용되는 탄소/페놀릭 복합재료의 열반응 수치해석을 수행하였다. 본 논문에서 탄소/페놀릭 재료의 열반응 해석은 (1) 로켓 노즐벽에서 대류열전달계수를 구하기 위한 연소가스의 경계층 적분방정식 수치해석과 (2) 삭마두께, 숯깊이 및 온도를 계산하기 위한 탄소/페놀릭의 열반응(열분해, 삭마)을 고려한 1차원 열전도 해석으로 구성된다. 시험결과와 해석결과를 비교 분석하였으며, 목삽입재 좌우 인접 부위를 제외하고 잘 일치하는 것을 확인 할 수 있었다.

Phenolic Wastewater Treatment by a Mixed Culture GE2 Immobilized on Activated Carbon

  • The biological treatment by a mixed culture GE2 immobilized on activated carbon was investigated with a phenolic resin industrial wastewater containing 41,000 mg/l of phenol and 2,800 mg/l of formaldehyde. At a dilution of 20 times with aerated tap water, influent and effluent $COD_{Mn}$ were 4,587 mg/l and 46 mg/l, that is, $COD_{Mn}$ removal efficiency was 99.0%. At this time, phenol and formaldehyde con-centration of the effluent were 1.24 and 6.80 mg/l, indicating removal efficiencies of 99.9 and 94.1%, respectively.

  • In this study, a hybrid composite journal bearing composed of carbon fiber reinforced phenolic composite liner and metal backing was manufactured to solve the seizure problem of metallic journal bearing materials because the carbon fiber has self-lubricating ability and the phenolic resin has thermal resistance characteristics. To estimate the wear resistance of carbon fiber phenolic composite, wear tests were performed at several pressures and velocities. The oil absorption characteristics, coefficient of thermal expansion, strength and stiffness of the composite were also tested. Using the measured stiffness values, the thermal residual stresses in the composite were calculated to check the reliability of the composite journal bearing.

  • 탄소/페놀릭 복합재의 삭마 미세구조와 특성에 대하여 설명하였다. 삭마현상은 추진제와 산화제 사이의 반응에 의한 수증기와 탄산가스의 몰분율에 의해 좌우된다. 그러나, 이 연구논문은 삭마현상이 탄소섬유의 직조형태, 직조밀도, tow크기에 의해서도 변화될 수 있음을 주사전자현미경, 밀도, 열전도도. 삭마표면등을 통해 설명했다. 3가지의 직조형태중, 3K8HS 직조구조가 3K twill구조나 12K8HS구조보다 우수한 내삭마성을 보임을 설명했다.
