Thin films of diamond-like carbon(DLC) can be successfully deposited by using a magnetron plasma chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method with an rf(13.56 MHz) plasma of $C_dH_8$. Plasma characteristics are analyzed as a function of the magnetic field. As the magnetic field increases, both electron temperature ($T_e$) and density ($n_e$)increase, but the negative dc self-bias voltage (-$V_{ab}$) decreases, irrespective of gas pressures in the range of 1~7 mTorr. High deposition rates have been obtained even at low gas pressures, which may be attributed to the increased mean free path of electrons in the magentron plasma. Effects of rf power and additive gas on the structural properties of DLC films aer also examined by using various technique namely, TED(transmissio electron diffraction) microanalysis, FTIR, and Raman spectroscopies.
In this piece of work, carbon nanotubes motion equations are framed by Kelvin's method. Employment of the Kelvin's method procedure gives birth to the tube frequency equation. It is also exhibited that the effect of frequencies is investigated by varying the different index of polynomial function. By using volume fraction for power law index, the fundamental natural frequency spectra for two forms of single-walled carbon nanotubes are calculated. The influence of frequencies against length-to-diameter ratios with varying power law index are investigated in detail for these tubes. Throughout the computation, it is observed that the frequency behavior for the boundary conditions follow as; clamped-clamped, simply supported-simply supported and these frequency curves are higher than that of clamped-free curves. Computer software MATLAB is utilized for the frequencies of single-walled carbon nanotubes.
We report a simple way of fabricating high-quality carbon nanoscrolls (CNSs) by taking advantage of strain relief due to large difference in strain at the interface of graphene and underlying layer. This method allows strain-controlled self rolling-up of monolayer graphene during etching process at predefined positions on SiO2/Si substrates by photolithography. The size and the length of the CNSs can be easily controlled by adjusting the thickness of the underlying layer and by pre-patterning. Raman spectroscopy studies show that the CNSs is free of significant defects, and the electronic structure and phonon dispersion are slightly different from those of two-dimensional graphene. The preparation of high-quality CNSs may open up new opportunities for both fundamental and applied research of CNSs.
Silicon carbide powder was prepared from mixtures of Sangdong silica sand and carbon black by SHS (Self propagating High temperature Synthesis) method which utilizes magnesiothermic reduction of silica. In the powder preparation process, the reacted powder was leached by chloric acid to remove the magnesium oxide and was subsequently roasted to remove free carbon. The impurities were mostly eliminated by hot acid treatment. The resultant SiC powder showed the mean particle size of 0.22 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and the specific surface area of $66.55 m^2/g$. The SiC powder was mixed with 1 wt% of boron and of carbon to increase densification rate. The mixed powder was pressed and sintered pressurelessly at $2100^{\circ}C$ for 30 min in argon gas. The sintered body showed the hardness of $2550 kg{\cdot}f/mm^2$ and the fracture toughness, KIC of $3.47 MN/m^{3/2}$.
Relative reactivity of various carbonyl and acid derivatives in MPV-type (Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley) reduction with an DIBAL(F) model has been studied via DFT and MP2 methods. Free energies of initial adduct formation (-Gadd) of DIBAL(F) model and carbonyls are in the order of amide < ester < aldehyde < ketone < acid chloride; in the alan-amide adduct, the developed positive charge at carbonyl carbon is expected to be stabilized by amide resonance, but in the acid chloride adduct it is destabilized by inductive effect of chloride. However the TS barrier energies (${\Delta}G_{TS}$) for the MPV-type hydride reduction of the carbonyl adducts are in the order of aldehyde < ketone < acid chloride << ester < amide; presumably decreasing order of electrophilicity of carbonyl carbon at adducts, which is well correlated with experimental data. It is noted that the relative reactivity of carbonyl derivatives in MPV-type reduction with DIBAL(X) is not governed by the alan-adduct formation energies, but follows the order of electrophilicity of carbonyl carbon of transition states.
The object of this study is to design the Radar Absorbing Structures (RAS) having sandwich structures in the X-band $(8.2\~12.4GHz)$ frequencies. Glass fabric/epoxy composites containing conductive carbon blacks and carbon fabric/epoxy composites were used for the face sheets. Polyurethane (PU) foams containing multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWNT) were used for the core. Their permittivities in the X-band were measured using the transmission line technique. The reflection loss characteristics for multi-layered sandwich structures were calculated using the theory of transmission and reflection in a multi-layered medium. Three kinds of specimens were fabricated and their reflection losses in the X-band were measured using the free space technique. Experimental results were in good agreements with simulated ones in 10dB absorbing bandwidth.
Dynamic analysis of an embedded single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) traversed by a moving nanoparticle, which is modeled as a moving load, is investigated in this study based on the nonlocal Timoshenko beam theory, including transverse shear deformation and rotary inertia. The governing equations and boundary conditions are derived by using the principle of virtual displacement. The Galerkin method and the direct integration method of Newmark are employed to find the dynamic response of the SWCNT. A detailed parametric study is conducted to study the influences of the nonlocal parameter, aspect ratio of the SWCNT, elastic medium constant and the moving load velocity on the dynamic responses of SWCNT. For comparison purpose, free vibration frequencies of the SWCNT are obtained and compared with a previously published study. Good agreement is observed. The results show that the above mentioned effects play an important role on the dynamic behaviour of the SWCNT.
The utilization of acetate by Dunaliella tertiolecta was examined, and the detections and assays of the enzymes of the tricarboxylic acid cycle and the glyoxylate pathway were described. Acetate could not be utilized as a sole carbon source for the growth. The carboxyl carbon of acetate was incorporated more rapidly into CO2 than the methyl carbon. It was identified that malate, succinate, citrate and etc., were accumulated whne [U-14C] acetate was supplied to the cell free homogenate. The following enzyme activities were measured; acetothiokinase, isocitrate dehydrogenase, fumarase, malate dehydrogenase and aconitase. Though isocitratase, malate synthetase, succinate dehydrogenase and oxoglutarate dehydrogenase could not be detected, 14C from succinate was easily contributed to CO2 and cell component. The evidence suggested that the glyoxylate pathway was not operative and showed that the TCA cycle was the all important pathway in the oxidation of acetate to CO2 in Dunaliella.

The dry-milling technique was used for mixing and crushing oxides and graphite powders. The ratio of ball-to-powder was 30:1 and argon gas was filled in jar. The excess carbon was $10{\sim}20wt%$ of the stoichiometric amount. The dry-milling was carried for 20 hours. The mixed powders were reduced and carburized at $900{\sim}980^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours flowing Ar gas in tube furnace. The dry-milled powders showed the wide diffraction patterns of X-ray. The reactions of reduction and carburization were completed in 3 hours at $980^{\circ}C$. After the reactions, the mean size of WC particles was about 200 nm. The content of free carbon in WC/Co mixed powders was less as the reaction temperature increased.
Metal containing hydrogen free nanocrystalline structured carbon (Me:nc-C) films were synthesized by closed-field unbalanced magnetron sputtering system (CFUBM). The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the microstructure and physical properties of Me:nc-C films as a function of the concentration of materials. The film structures were examined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy. The physical properties of the Me:nc-C films were evaluated by using a 4-point probe. The fraction of graphite clusters was found to be increased by containing titanium and the electrical resistivity decreased with increasing amount of containing.
