  • This study compares true stress-true strain curves obtained by tensile tests of various piping materials with bi-linear stress-strain approximation suggested in the JSME Code Case(CC) Draft, a guideline for piping seismic inelastic response analysis. Based on the comparisons, the reliability of the bi-linear approximation is evaluated. It is found that bi-linear stress-strain curve of TP316 stainless steel is in good agreement with its true stress-true strain curve. However, Bi-linear stress-strain curves of TP304 stainless steel and carbon steels determined by the approximation cannot appropriately estimate their stress-strain behavior. Accordingly new bi-linear approximations for carbon steels and low-alloy steels are proposed. The proposed bi-linear approximations for carbon and low-alloy steels, which include the temperature effect on strength and hardening of material, estimate their stress-strain behavior reasonably well.

  • A thermodynamic model was developed to analyze the characteristics of the heat generation during transformation of austenite in 0.186wt% and 0.458 wt%. carbon steels. The heat capacity and the heat evolved during transformation were formulated as functions of temperature and chemical composition for ferrite bainite and pearlite. in addition using the transformation dilatometer the transformation heat evolved during cooling was measured and the transformation behavior was observed. It was found that the heat capacity of ferrite was similar to those of pearlite and bainite. The heat capacity of ferrite was greater than that of bainite which was greater than that of pearlite. The molar heat of transformation to pearlite was greater than that to bainite which was greater than that to ferrite. The heats were found to be increased with decreased temperature and increasing the carbon content, It was also observed that the thermodynamic model. The heat of transformation in the higher carbon steel was greater than that in the lower carbon one. This was attributed to the lower transformation temperature and the greater amount of transformed pearlite in the higher carbon steel.

  • Effects of manganese and carbon on the HAZ microstructural evolution in 500㎫ grade titanium oxide steels were investigated. Microstructural evolution primarily depends on supercooling. When cooled at 3$^{\circ}C$/s in 0.15%C-1.5%Mn steel, grain boundary and Widmanst tten ferrite formed at 640 and 62$0^{\circ}C$, respectively, followed by competitive formation of acicular ferrite and upper bainite inside of grain at 58$0^{\circ}C$. With an increase of manganese, degree of supercooling increased while critical cooling rate for the formation of gain boundary ferrite decreased. Consequently, the amount of acicular ferrite in HAZ was decreased in 2.0%Mn after initial increase in 1.0 and 1.5%Mn. Therefore, optimum supercooling should be maintained to accelerate acicular ferrite formation in titanium oxide steels. Low carbon steel, 0.11%C-1.5%Mn, showed larger amount of acicular ferrite than higher carbon steel because of effectiveness of diffusionless transformation in low carbon steel.

  • Effectsof carbon content on the weldability of B-containing 620 grade high Cr ferritic cast steels were investigated. Cast steel with lower carbon content of 0.07% showed lower HAZ hardness because of the formation of lower carbon martensite in HAZ. It also showed less solidification cracking susceptibility in weld metal because of the formation of delta ferrite. However, hot ductility showed no difference between cast steels with lower and higher carbon contents. Cast steel with lower carbon content showed greater HAZ softening after PWHT in the region heated between AC1 and AC3 because of its higher base metal hardness.

  • In this study, the influence of carbon equivalents on friction welds of similar steels was investigated. Four types of steels with 15mm diameter tested in the wide range of carbon equivalents from 0.3 to 1.1 Main experimental results are summarized as follows : (1) Under the constant burn-off length, the friction time becomes longer with the increasing carbon equivalent, but the upset length shows no consistent tendencies. (2) Due to the recrystallization in the contact area, the maximum hardness occurs some away from the contact surface. And it increases almost linearly with the increasing carbon equivalent. (3) Even a steel with 1.1 C.E. can be friction welded to make defect-free welds. (4) With the increasing carbon equivalent, the bend angle and charpy impact value decrease very rapidly in the range from 0.3 C. E., but remain nearly unchanged for C. E. higher than 0.6. (5) Heat treatment of the base metals before welding has very little influence on the mechanical properties of welds. On the other hand, normalizing of the welds improves the bend angle and charpy impact value, but its effect becomes almost negligible, when the carbon equivalents are higher than 0.6.

  • Highly alloyed high speed tool steels(ASP steels) were rapidly solidified by melt spinning process, and the microstructures of melt spun tool steel ribbons were examined by optical microscopy and transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscope. The microstructure of melt spun tool steel ribbon was found to be consisted of ${\delta}-ferrite$ cells surrounded by austenite and V-rich MC carbides. The size of ${\delta}-ferrite$ cells and intercellular MC carbides were about $0.4{\mu}m$ or less and 30nm or less, respectively. From the melt spun tool steel ribbons, only the MC type carbide phase was observed, instead of $M_2C$, $M_{23}C_6$ and $M_6C$ carbides which were generally observed in other rapidly solidified high speed steels. Such a change in type of carbide phase formed could be attributed to the increase in alloying content of vanadium and carbon. However, changes in microsturcture of melt spun tool steels with alloying content of cobalt, vanadium and carbon were not observed.

  • The purpose of this work is to understand the effect of Mo addition on SSC susceptibility of high strength low alloy steels in terms of microstructure and corrosion property. Materials used in this study are high strength low alloy (HSLA) steels with carbon content of 0.04wt% and Mo content varying from 0.1 to 0.3wt%. The corrosion property of steels was evaluated by immersion test in NACE-TM01-77 solution A and by analyzing the growth behavior of surface corrosion products. SSC resistance of steels was evaluated using constant load test. Electrochemical test was performed to investigate initial corrosion rate. Addition of Mo increased corrosion rate of steels by enhancing the porosity of surface corrosion products. However, corrosion rate was not directly related to SSC susceptibility of steels.

  • The effect of tungsten (W) addition on the hardenability of low-carbon boron steels was investigated using dilatometry, microstructural observations and secondary ion mass spectroscopy. The hardenability was discussed with respect to transformation behaviour aspects depending on the segregation and precipitation of boron at austenite grain boundaries. A critical cooling rate producing a hardness corresponding to 90 % martensite structure was measured from a hardness distribution plot, and was used as a criterion to estimate hardenability at faster cooling rates. In the low-carbon boron steel, the addition of 0.50 wt.% W was comparable to that of 0.20 wt.% molybdenum in terms of critical cooling rate, indicating hardenability at faster cooling rates. However, the addition of 0.50 wt.% W was not more effective than the addition of .0.20 wt.% molybdenum at slower cooling rates. The addition of 0.20 wt.% molybdenum completely suppressed the formation of eutectoid ferrite even at the slow cooling rate of $0.2^{\circ}C/s$, while the addition of 0.50 wt.% W did not, even at the cooling rate of $1.0^{\circ}C/s$. Therefore, it was found that the effect of alloying elements on the hardenability of low-carbon boron steels can be differently evaluated according to cooling rate.

  • The present study is concerned with the influence of niobium(Nb) addition and austenitizing temperature on the hardenability of low-carbon boron steels. The steel specimens were austenitized at different temperatures and cooled with different cooling rates using dilatometry; their microstructures and hardness were analyzed to estimate the hardenability. The addition of Nb hardly affected the transformation start and finish temperatures at lower austenitizing temperatures, whereas it significantly decreased the transformation finish temperature at higher austenitizing temperatures. This could be explained by the non-equilibrium segregation mechanism of boron atoms. When the Nb-added boron steel specimens were austenitized at higher temperatures, it is possible that Nb and carbon atoms present in the austenite phase retarded the diffusion of carbon towards the austenite grain boundaries during cooling due to the formation of NbC precipitate and Nb-C clusters, thus preventing the precipitation of $M_{23}(C,B)_6$ along the austenite grain boundaries and thereby improving the hardenability of the boron steels. As a result, because it considerably decreases the transformation finish temperature and prohibits the nucleation of proeutectoid ferrite even at the slow cooling rate of $3^{\circ}C/s$, irrespective of the austenitizing temperature, the addition of 0.05 wt.% Nb had nearly the same hardenability-enhancing effect as did the addition of 0.2 wt.% Mo.

  • In the present work, we use multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) as the starting material for the fabrication of sintered carbon steel. A comparison is made with conventionally sintered carbon steel, where graphite is used as the starting material. Milling is performed using a horizontal mill sintered in a vacuum furnace. We analyze the grain size, number of pores, X-ray diffraction patterns, and microstructure. Changes in the physical properties are determined by using the Archimedes method and Vickers hardness measurements. The result shows that the use of MWCNTs instead of graphite significantly reduces the size and volume of the pores as well as the grain size after sintering. The addition of $Y_2O_3$.to the Fe-MWCNT samples further inhibits the growth of grains.
