  • Biomimetic actuators that can produce soft-actuation but large force capability are of interest. Nafion, an effective ionomeric material from DuPont, has been shown to produce large deformation under low electric fields (<10V/mm). Carbon nanotube/polymer nanocomposites were cast to enhance the electromechanical properties of the composites. Multiwalled carbon nanotube (M-CNT)/Nafion nanocomposites were prepared by a solution casting to investigate the effect of M-CNT loading in the range of 0 to 7 wt% on electromechanical properties of the M-CNT/Nafion nanocomposites. The measured elastic modulus and actuation force of the M-CNT/Nafion nanocomposites are drastically different, showing larger elastic modulus and improved electromechanical coupling, from the one without M-CNT.

  • Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) is a semi-crystalline engineering thermoplastic resin that has outstanding thermal stability, mechanical strength, inherent flame retardancy, chemical resistance, and electrical properties. Due to these outstanding properties, it is preferred as a matrix for composite materials. Many studies have been conducted to produce composites with carbon fibers and glass fibers to improve mechanical properties and provide functionality of PPS. In this review paper, we report a brief introduction to the fabrication and applications of PPS composites with carbon nanotubes, graphene, carbon fibers, and glass fibers.

  • In the context of classic conical shell formulation, nonlinear forced vibration analysis of truncated conical shells and annular plates made of multi-scale epoxy/CNT/fiberglass composites has been presented. The composite material is reinforced by carbon nanotube (CNT) and also fiberglass for which the material properties are defined according to a 3D Mori-Tanaka micromechanical scheme. By utilizing the Jacobi elliptic functions, the frequency-deflection curves of truncated conical shells and annular plates related to their forced vibrations have been derived. The main focus is to study the influences of CNT amount, fiberglass volume, open angle, fiber angle, truncated distance and force magnitude on forced vibrational behaviors of multi-scale truncated conical shells and annular plates.

  • To synthesize an antistatic material for use in semiconductor wafer transport trays, in-situ polymerization of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and polyurethane (PU) incorporating carbon nanotubes was designed and conducted. The newly synthesized composites were evaluated for their thermal and electrical conductivity properties under conditions mimicking commercial device manufacturing processes. Comparative analysis of their respective performances revealed that both PMMA and PU containing carbon nanotubes exhibited enhanced thermal properties and superior electrical conductivity as the nanotube content increased. Morphology of the composites synthesized via in-situ polymerization was confirmed to be excellent through FE-SEM analysis, demonstrating good dispersibility. Both PMMA and PU incorporating carbon nanotubes showed outstanding surface resistance values of 103 Ω/□, indicating their suitability as antistatic materials for semiconductor applications.

  • Semiconducting metal oxides have been frequently used as gas sensing materials. While zinc oxide is a popular material for such applications, structures such as nanowires, nanorods and nanotubes, due to their large surface area, are natural candidates for use as gas sensors of higher sensitivity. The compound ZnO has been studied, due to its chemical and thermal stability, for use as an n-type semiconducting gas sensor. ZnO has a large exciton binding energy and a large bandgap energy at room temperature. Also, ZnO is sensitive to toxic and combustible gases. The NO gas properties of zinc oxide-single wall carbon nanotube (ZnO-SWCNT) composites were investigated. Fabrication includes the deposition of porous SWCNTs on thermally oxidized $SiO_2$ substrates followed by sputter deposition of Zn and thermal oxidation at $400^{\circ}C$ in oxygen. The Zn films were controlled to 50 nm thicknesses. The effects of microstructure and gas sensing properties were studied for process optimization through comparison of ZnO-SWCNT composites with ZnO film. The basic sensor response behavior to 10 ppm NO gas were checked at different operation temperatures in the range of $150-300^{\circ}C$. The highest sensor responses were observed at $300^{\circ}C$ in ZnO film and $250^{\circ}C$ in ZnO-SWCNT composites. The ZnO-SWCNT composite sensor showed a sensor response (~1300%) five times higher than that of pure ZnO thin film sensors at an operation temperature of $250^{\circ}C$.

  • The electrical resistance measurement was investigated as a damage monitoring method. In this study, 0.5 wt% Carbon nanotube reinforced polypropylene (CNT/PP) composites were evaluated under compressive fatigue loading. The shape of specimens was $20^{\circ}$ curved round type. Compression strength and electrical resistance were measured at different sections of specimen during compression. The microcracks of CNT/PP composites were detected based on the changing ratio of electrical resistance. Micro-damage during compressive fatigue test could be detected by electrical resistance measurements. The reason is that the contact points of CNTs in composites decreased under fatigue loading. During compressive fatigue test, larger change of electrical resistance was detected at the microcrack sections. It was proved that microcracks could be detected by electrical resistance measurement under compression test, whereas the real delamination parts were consistent with the predicted results by electrical resistance measurement.

  • $MWCNT-TiO_2$ nano composites and $Ag-MWCNT-TiO_2$ nano composites were prepared from Multi-Walled Carbon NanoTube (MWCNT), titanium (IV) butoxide (TNB) solution and silver nitrate ($AgNO_3$) by the sol-gel method. The dispersion and structure of Ag in the synthesized composites was observed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Field Emission Transmission Electron Microscopy (FE-TEM). X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) patterns of the composites showed that the composites contained an anatase phase. The Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) showed the presence of C, O, Ti and Ag peaks. The $TiO_2$ particles were distributed uniformly in the MWCNT network, and Ag particles were virtually fixed on the surface of the tubes. Also decomposition of the methylene blue was investigated according to UV radiation times for study photocatalytic activity. $Ag-MWCNT-TiO_2$ nano composites show high photodegradation than $MWCNT-TiO_2$ nano composites. The results indicate that the high conductivity of Ag improved the photoactivity of the $MWCNT-TiO_2$ composite.

  • Graphite nanofiber (GNF) and carbon nanotube (CNT) are novel fiber reinforcing materials which have outstanding physical and mechanical properties. Aluminum matrix composites reinforced graphite nanofiber were fabricated by conventional powder metallurgy (PM) method. The composites were prepared through ultrasonication, ball milling, and hot isostatic pressing. A uniform distribution of GNF in aluminum matrix could be obtained. To measure the mechanical properties of GNF-Al composites testings were done in indentation and compression. The compressive strength was enhanced according to reinforcing graphite nanofiber while the hardness was decreased. This study makes the high performance composites for future applications.

  • In this study, damaged composite laminates were repaired by a stepped patch repair method using halloysite nanotube(HNT) and milled carbon(MC) reinforced composite materials with different amount of the particles. And the mechanical and structural effects of the particles on the interface between the damaged and repair surfaces were analyzed. At this time, after exposing them to a harsh environment of high temperature and humidity for a long time, the recovery rate of the material properties relative to the material forming the damaged plate was compared. As a result, at $70^{\circ}C$ high temperature distilled water, the hygroscopicity of the HNT/GFRP composites was significantly different from that of the MC/GFRP composites. Especially, 0.5, 1 wt. % HNT was added, the moisture absorption rate was the lowest and this was the factor that contributed to the mechanical strength increase. On the other hand, MC showed a high hygroscopic resistance only with a small amount, and the strength was different according to the action direction of the load, and the addition amount was also different.

  • We measured the non-carbon content of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) in SWCNT soot using thermogravimetric analysis. The weight increased percentage by the oxidation of metal in the raw soot is well obtained by TGA graph which was confirmed with ICP-AES, XRD, and XPS. This work will be very useful for the purity precise evaluation of SWCNT with UN-vis-NIR spectroscopy.
