Effect of CNT Particle Dispersion in CNT Paste on Field Emission Characteristics in Carbon Nanotube Cathode (탄소나노튜브의 분산이 탄소나노튜브 캐소드의 전계방출 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • The uniformity of emission mage and field emission properties of carbon nanotube(CNT) cathodes dependence on CNT particle dispersion were investigated for field emission displays. We used multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) synthesized by CVD method as the field emitter materials. CNT dispersion in CNT ink was carried out by ultrasonication and shaking methods. According to CNT dispersion conditions, the uniformity of emission image and field emission properties of CNT cathodes were greatly affected. The smaller particles of filler materials and CNT powders provide the better properties of the CNT cathodes.

  • STS 410, a representative martensitic stainless steel, contains 13 % chromium and is used for building materials, automobile parts, office equipment, kitchen utensils, and tableware. In general, the strength of STS 410 changes by the carbon content, and STS 410 of low carbon has excellent toughness and high carbon has excellent abrasion resistance. In this study, a fatigue test was performed on the STS 410 material to evaluate the exact fatigue limit and to evaluate the behavior of the material against fatigue. In addition, the effect on burnishing, a kind of plastic processing that creates a smooth surface by pressing a ball or roller on the inner and outer surfaces of the material was evaluated. The fatigue limit was 509 MPa for the STS 410 material, and the result was 54.5 % of the tensile strength. The fatigue limit was 542 MPa for the specimen of diamind burnished STS 410 material, and it was 58.5 % of the tensile strength.

  • Asbestos is being replaced throughout the world among friction materials because of its carcinogenic nature. This has raised an important issue of heat dissipation in the non-asbestos brake pad materials being developed for automobiles etc. It has been found that two of the components i.e. carbon fibres as reinforcement and graphite powder as friction modifier, in the brake pad material, can playa vital role in this direction. The study reports the influence of these modifications on the thermal properties like coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and thermal conductivity along with the mechanical properties of nonasbestos brake pad composite samples developed in the laboratory.

  • The purpose of this study is to research and develop poly(p-phenylene)(PPP)-based carbon obtained by pyrolyzing electrochemically prepared PPP as a anode of rocking chair batteries. Disordered carbon materials were obtains by heat-treating of PPP films in a nitrogen atmosphere at 4$0^{\circ}C$ to 110$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. The carbon prepared by heat treatment showed a broad x-ray diffraction peak having characteristics of disordered carbon. Carbon electrodes were charged and discharged at a current density of 0.1㎃/$\textrm{cm}^2$. First discharge capacity of 267㎃h/g and 34% of charge/discharge efficiency were observed from PPP-based carbon prepared at $700^{\circ}C$.

  • Carbon has been widely used for the material of plasma facing components in fusion experiment devices like a tokamak, because carbon has good thermal and mechanical properties. However carbon gas a relatively high ougassing rate. Therefore the amount and the surface area of the carbon material used in the vessel will determine the background pressure of the vacuum vessel. In this experiment influences of carbon on the vacuum performance was investigated by measuring chamber pressure, ougassing rater and gas spectrum of carbon fiber composite (CFC) samples in various situations, pumping out, chamber baking, carbon heating (250~$500^{\circ}C$), exposure to atmosphere for maintenance of in-vessel components, etc., occurring routinely during tokamak operations.

Physical and Mechanical Properties of Porous Concrete Using Waste Activated Carbon (폐활성탄을 사용한 다공성 콘크리트의 물리.역학적 성질)

  • This study was performed to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of porous concrete using waste activated carbon. Material used were ordinary portland cement, recycled coarse aggregate, waste activated carbon and superplasticizer. The replacement ratios of waste activated carbon were 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9, and 10 %. The void ratio was decreased and ultrasonic pulse velocity was increased with increasing the waste activated carbon powder, respectively. The compressive strength and flexural strength of porous concrete using waste activated carbon powder were in the range of 8.21${\sim1}$6.58 MPa and 1.69${\sim1}$3.68 MPa, respectively. The pH degree of porous concrete in 1day and 77days were shown in 12.50${\sim1}$12.63 and 10.21${\sim1}$10.70, respectively. Accordingly, waste activated carbon can be used for porous concrete material.

  • A comparison study of carbon coating on $LiFePO_4$ was done with two different carbon sources-petroleum pitch and Ketjen black. Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis were applied to the carbon-coated $LiFePO_4$. $LiFePO_4$ which was carbon-coated with petroleum pitch showed more uniform carbon layer and ordered carbon structure. Such uniformity and ordered structure of carbon coating layer resulted in higher initial discharge capacity and better rate capability.

Catalytic Mechanism for Growth of Carbon Nanotubes under CO-H2 Gas Mixture

  • In order to investigate the catalytic mechanism for the growth of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), a comprehensive study was conducted using carbon materials synthesized at 680 ${^{\circ}C}$ with a gas mixture of CO-H$_2$ after reduction at 800 ${^{\circ}C}$ by H$_2$ gas from iron oxide, and metal Pt. The resulting material was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD) after a variety of reaction times. The carbon materials synthesized by metal Pt were little affected by reaction time and the sintered particles did not form CNTs. Xray analysis revealed that metal Fe was completely converted to iron carbide (Fe$_3$C) without Fe peaks in the early stage. After 5 min, iron carbide (Fe$_3$C) and carbon (C) phases were observed at the beginning of CNTs growth. It was found that the intensity of the carbon(C) peak gradually increased with the continuous growth of CNTs as reaction time increases. It was also found that the catalyst of growth of CNTs was metal carbide.

DEPENDENCY OF SINGLE-PHASE FAC OF CARBON AND LOW-ALLOY STEELS FOR NPP SYSTEM PIPING ON PH, ORIFICE DISTANCE AND MATERIAL

  • To investigate the flow-accelerated corrosion (FAC) dependency of carbon steel (A106 Gr. B) and low-alloy steels (1Cr-1/2Mo, 21/4Cr-1Mo) on pH, orifice distance, and material, experiments were carried out. These experiments were performed using a flow velocity of 4 m/sec (partly 9 m/sec) at pH $8.0\~10.0$ in an oxygen-free aqueous solution re-circulated in an Erosion-Corrosion Test Loop at $130^{\circ}\;{\ldots}$ for 500 hours. The weight loss of the carbon steel specimens appeared to be positively dependent on the flow velocity. That of the carbon and low-alloy steel specimens also showed to be distinguishably dependent on the pH. At pH levels of $8.0\~9.5$ it decreased, but increased from 9.5 to 10.0. Utility water chemistry personnel should carefully consider this kind of pH dependency to control the water system pH to mitigate FAC of the piping system material. The weight loss of the specimens located further from the orifice in the distance range of $6.8\~27.2$ mm was shown to be greater, except for 21/4Cr-1Mo, which showed no orifice distance dependency. Low alloy steel specimens exhibited a factor of two times better resistance to FAC than that of the carbon steel. Based on this kind of FAC dependency of the carbon and low-alloy steels on the orifice distance and material, we conclude that it is necessary to alternate the composition of the secondary piping system material of NPPs, using low-alloy steels, such as 21/4Cr-1Mo, particularly when the system piping has to be replaced.

Electrochemical Characteristics of Carbonaceous Materials for Energy Storable Electrode Fabrication

  • Photo-capacitor electrodes are attracting great attention because of their high capacitance and potential applications in electronic devices. Carbon capacitor, active carbon capacitor and its combination will be fabricated using a sandwich method as carbonaceous material on each type of storable electrode with $20{\times}15$[mm] cell size. Carbon/active carbon cell was fabricated using sol-gel process with $120[^{\circ}C]$ dry temperature in 2hour and using sintering process with $500[^{\circ}C]$ in 2hour. The effect of sintering temperature on carbon properties was also investigated with an X-ray diffraction technique to get the best sintering temperature. The detail of the fabrication process will be explained. Active carbon as carbonaceous material has a better capacitance in storable electrode with mean thickness $32[{\mu}m]$ and with particle size $1[{\mu}m]$ to $4.5[{\mu}m]$ in $20{\times}15$[mm] sample size of storable electrode.
