  • It is well known that air pollutants exert a bad influence on human health. According to the United Nations Environment Program, 4.3 million people die from carbon monoxide and particulate matter annually from all over the world. Carbon monoxide is a toxic gas that is the most dangerous of the gas consisting of carbon and oxygen. In this paper, we used 1 hour, 6 hours, 12 hours, and 24 hours average carbon monoxide concentration data collected between 2004 and 2013 in Daegu Gyeongbuk area. Parameters of the generalized extreme value distribution were estimated by maximum likelihood estimation and L-moments estimation. An evalution of goodness of fitness also was performed. Since the number of samples were small, L-moment estimation turned out to be suitable for parameter estimation. We also calculated 5 year, 10 year, 20 year, and 40 year return level.

  • Carbon storage is one of the regulating ecosystem services provided by urban street trees. It is important that evaluating the economic value of ecosystem services accurately. The carbon storage of street trees was calculated by measuring the morphological parameter on the field. As the method is labor-intensive and time-consuming for the macro-scale research, remote sensing has been more widely used. The airborne Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) is used in obtaining the point clouds data of a densely planted area and extracting individual trees for the carbon storage estimation. However, the LiDAR has limitations such as high cost and complicated operations. In addition, trees change over time they need to be frequently. Therefore, Structure from Motion (SfM) photogrammetry with unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is a more suitable method for obtaining point clouds data. In this paper, a UAV loaded with a digital camera was employed to take oblique aerial images for generating point cloud of street trees. We extracted the diameter of breast height (DBH) from generated point cloud data to calculate the carbon storage. We compared DBH calculated from UAV data and measured data from the field in the selected area. The calculated DBH was used to estimate the carbon storage of street trees in the study area using a regression model. The results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of applying UAV imagery and SfM technique to the carbon storage estimation of street trees. The technique can contribute to efficiently building inventories of the carbon storage of street trees in urban areas.

  • Forest plantations become important strategy not merely for the financial aspect, but for carbon sequestration and ecosystem stability. Forest plantations increase the density of the forest biomass, which reduce the increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide. Biomass density is also a useful variable for comparing structural and functional attributes of forest ecosystems across a wide range of environmental conditions. In this study, carbon sequestration of teak (Tectona grandis Linn. f.) in the individual tree and plantation levels estimation was carried out Site-specific allometric equation for the estimation of teak tree biomass was developed based on the direct measurement of fifteen (15) harvested trees in the Oak-twin Township of the Bago Yoma Region, Myanmar. A regression equation of the diameter at breast height (DBH) and the aboveground biomass (carbon content) was constructed to estimate the carbon storage level of plantations, which averaged 79 ton/ha. The average carbon accumulation in the soil (up to 30 cm in depth) was estimated 38.89 ton/ha, The highest mean annual increment (MAI) of total carbon was found in the 6-yr-old teak plantation (12.10 ton/ha/yr) whereas the lowest MAI was in the 26-yr-old teak plantation (4.31 ton/ha/yr).

  • Estimation of biomass carbon stock is an important research for estimation of public benefit of forest. Previous studies about biomass carbon stock estimation have limitations, which come from the used deterministic models. The most serious problem of deterministic models is that deterministic models do not provide any explanation about the relevant effects of errors. In this study, the effects of location errors were analyzed in order to estimation of biomass carbon stock of Danyang area using Monte Carlo simulation method. More specifically, the k-Nearest Neighbor(kNN) algorithm was used for basic estimation. In this procedure, random and systematic errors were added on the location of Sample plot, and effects on estimation error were analyzed by checking the changes of RMSE. As a result of random error simulation, mean RMSE of estimation was increased from 24.8 tonC/ha to 26 tonC/ha when 0.5~1 pixel location errors were added. However, mean RMSE was converged after the location errors were added 0.8 pixel, because of characteristic of study site. In case of the systematic error simulation, any significant trends of RMSE were not detected in the test data.

  • Since the input data such as types and quantities of materials cannot be acquired during the planning and designing phases, it is difficult to estimate the carbon emissions from the construction phase. As the materials are closely related to the building usages, an approximate estimation by the usages can be suggested. However, before confirming the estimation, the difference test among the carbon emissions of the building usages should be implemented. This study executed t-test or Mann-Whitney test between apartments and schools. The result of the study statistically verified the significant difference between the carbon emissions of apartments and schools.

  • Global warming has been hot issue world wide. Korea has been dealing with the global issue under the slogan of low carbon and green-growth such as setting national greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets and allocation to each industrial sector. Infrastructure construction, in which enormous social overhead capital (SOC) is input, has great role as one of the actions. Road is one of the representative infrastructure and large amount of resources is utilized in its construction, operation and maintenance stage. The estimation methodology of life cycle carbon emissions was developed and applied to a case study of highway currently under construction in this study. Also, total carbon emissions of all the highway in South Korea at present (2009) and cumulative carbon emissions from 2009 to 2020 were estimated using the results of case study.

  • This paper aims to study a method to estimate precise carbon absorption by quantification of forest information that uses accurate LiDAR data, hyperspectral image. To estimate precise carbon absorption value by using spatial data, a problem was found out of carbon absorption value estimation method with statistical method, which is already existed method, and then offered optimized carbon absorption estimation method with spatial information by analyzing with methods of compare digital aerial photogrammetry and LiDAR data. It turned out possible Precise classification and quantification in case of using LiDAR and hyperspectral image. Various classification of tree species was possible with use of LiDAR and hyperspectral image. Classification of hyperspectral image was matched in general with field survey and Mahalanobis distance classification method. Precise forest resources could be extracted using high density LiDAR data. Compared with existing method, 19.7% in forest area, 19.2% in total carbon absorption, 0.9% in absorption per unit area of difference created, and improvement was found out to be estimated precisely in international code.

  • The hardness of laser weldments has been predicted by using several carbon equivalent equations and estimation models. In this study, authors extended the model to boron steel sheets which are adopted for the hot press forming process. four kinds of boron steels with the strengths from 1500 MPa to 1900 MPa were considered and the hardness profiles of weldments was measured from the experiments of this study and the references. The traditional "Kaizu" equation could predict the hardness with an accuracy of -4.9% error although the Kaizu equation does not consider the boron content. Modified carbon equivalents were suggested by adding a term as like 5B or 14B into the Kaizu equation, and it could improve the accuracy of the prediction model.
