Metakaolin (MK), which is increasingly being used to produce high performance concrete, is produced by calcining purified kaolinite between 650 and $700^{\circ}C$ in a rotary kiln. The carbonation resistance of metakaolin blended concrete is lower than that of control concrete. Hence, it is critical to consider carbonation durability for rationally using metakaolin in the concrete industry. This study presents microstructure modeling during the carbonation of metakaolin blended concrete. First, based on a blended hydration mo del, the amount of carbonatable substances and porosity are determined. Second, based on the chemical reactions between carbon dioxide and carbonatable substances, the reduction of concrete porosity due to carbonation is calculated. Furthermore, $CO_2$ diffusivity is evaluated considering the concrete composition and exposed environment. The carbonation depth of concrete is analyzed using a diffusion-based model. The proposed microstructure model takes into account the influences of concrete composition, concrete curing, and exposure condition on carbonation. The proposed model is useful as a predetermination tool for the evaluation of the carbonation service life of metakaolin blended concrete.
Fine particles of water-soluble pharmaceuticals were prepared using a new micronization method, Carbon Dioxide Assisted Nebulization in a Bubble Dryer(CAN-BD). The process utilized mixtures of CO$_2$ in aqueous solution at supercritical conditions to form an emulsion. The aerosols were dried with pre-heated nitrogen, and the drying chamber was operated at near atmospheric pressure. The dry particles were collected on membrane filter at the bottom of the drying chamber. Several processing parameters such as flow rate, temperature, pressure, solid concentration and processing scale were accessed using NaCl, human serum albumin, and granulocyte-colony stimulating factor as model pharmaceuticals. Concrete can lose its alkalinity by concrete carbonation causing steel corrosion. Thus, the determination of the carbonation depth is necessary. An empirical model is proposed in this research to predict the carbonation depth of concrete using Gene expression programming (GEP). The GEP model was trained and validated using a large and reliable database collected from the literature. The model was developed using the six parameters that predominantly control the carbonation depth of concrete including carbon dioxide CO2 concentration, relative humidity, water-to-cement ratio, maximum aggregate size, aggregate to binder ratio and carbonation period. The model was statistically evaluated and then compared to the Jiang et al. model. A parametric study was finally performed to check the proposed GEP model's sensitivity to the selected input parameters.

In this study, the compressive strength development was analyzed at early ages of concrete specimens admixed with non-sintered hwangto to reduce the CO2 emissions generated during cement production. The W/B of the specimens was set at 0.41, the percentage of non-sintered hwangto admixture was set at three levels of 15, 30, and 45%, and the compressive strength were measured at 1, 3, 7, and 28 days. The results showed that the compressive strength decreases as the percentage of non-sintered hwangto increases, but the strength development rate increases, and the NHTC41-15 test specimen developed a compressive strength close to NC41 at 28 days.
$CO_{2}$ mineral carbonation technology, fixation technology of $CO_{2}$ as carbonates, is considered to be an alternative to the $CO_{2}$ geological storage technology, which can perform small- or medium-scale $CO_{2}$ storage. We provide the current R&D status of the mineral carbonation with special emphasis on the technical and economical feasibility of $CO_{2}$ mineral carbonation taken into consideration of the domestic geological and industrial environment. Given that the domestic industry produces relatively large amount of the industrial by-products, it is expected that the technology play a pivotal role on the $CO_{2}$ reduction countermeasure, reaching the potential storage capacity to 12Mt-$CO_{2}$/yr. The economics of the overall process should be improved via the development of advanced technologies on the pretreatment of raw materials, method/solvents for metal extraction, enhanced kinetics of carbonation reactions, heat integration, and the production of highly value-added carbonates.

Kimchi, a Korean fermented vegetable is packaged without pasteurization and distributed with live bacteria actively working to produce lactic acid and carbon dioxide gas in the product. The $CO_2$ production consisting of two distinct phases of initial fast and later slow rates depends on kimchi type, salt content and storage temperature. The $CO_2$ produced from kimchi is accumulated in the product package causing volume expansion and pressure buildup. The dependence of $CO_2$ production rate on salt content and storage temperature has been published formerly and can be used for estimating the package volume and pressure under a variety of storage conditions. As methods to alleviate the problems from the produced $CO_2$, package designs with controlled diffusion pinhole, high $CO_2$ permeable film or $CO_2$ absorber have been tried by several researchers. Properly designed packages adopting the device or tool were shown to have high dissolved $CO_2$ in kimchi without volume expansion and pressure buildup, giving good sensory quality with carbonic taste. Advantages and limitations of each method have been discussed.
An integrated wastewater treatment pond system is developed for treatment and recycling of excreta from dairy cattle. It is composed of three ponds in series. A pit with a capacity of $10m^3$, 2-day hydraulic residence time, and overflow velocity of $1.5m^3m^{-2}day^{-1}$ is located internally in primary pond. It is designed for efficient sludge sedimentation and effective methane fermentation. It receives $5m^3/day$ of diluted cattle excreta by the water used for clearing stalls. A submerged gays collector for the recovery of methane is installed on the top of the pit. The average BOD_5 concentration of influent is 398.7mg/l. That of the effluent from primary pond is 49.2mg/l. About 88% of BOD_5 are removed in primary pond. It is assumed that about 60% of the influent BOD_5 is removed in the pit and that almost all of the carbon of the removed BOD_5 in the pit is converted to methane and carbon dioxide. Methane fermentation of the pit is well established at $16^{\circ}C$. This phenomena results from temperature stability, complete anaerobic condition, and neutral pH of the pit. Gas from the collector is almost 90% methane, less than 9% nitrogen, and less than 1% carbon dioxide. Thus a purified methane is produced, which can be used as energy source.
The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the positive effects of artificial ground greening on the reduction of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) which can help improve ecological functions in cities and mitigation of climate change, through quantifying $CO_2$ uptake and evapotranspiration by the process of photosynthesis of some plants. Experiment of $CO_2$ uptake and evapotranspiration was conducted by measurement of $CO_2$ exchange rate using the infrared gas analyzer, for 7 month, growing season from May to November 2009, 2 times a month. The result was as follows; The $CO_2$ uptake quantity per $cm^2$ of Chrysanthemum zawadskii was the highest rate at $21.47{\times}10^{-6}g/cm^2/s$ and Poa pratensis was $16.20g{\times}10^{-6}g/cm^2/s$. The stronger was light of intensity, the higher were $CO_2$ uptake rate of most plants. In quantity of evapotranspiration, Poa pratensis was the highest rate at $8.75{\times}10^{-5}g/cm^2/s$ and Aquilegia buergariana was $8.66{\times}10^{-5}g/cm^2/s$. From this study, it is confirmed that artificial ground greening has capacity of absorption $CO_2$ and effects on improving urban microclimate.

Ammonia water was investigated as a new absorbent of the chemical absorption process for the removal of $CO_2$ in flue gas. The suitable range of ammonia water concentration and $CO_2$ loading ($mol\;CO_2/mol\;NH_3$) were decided in the point of view of $CO_2$ absorption capacity and $NH_4HCO_3$ precipitation. The absorption capacity of $CO_2$ and the precipitation of $NH_4HCO_3$ in liquid phase were calculated by the Pitzer model for electrolyte solution. The $CO_2$ absorption capacity of the ammonia water over $5\;molNH_3/kgH_2O$ was higher than that of conventional amine absorbent. The $CO_2$ loadings where precipitation occurred were decided at various absorbent concentrations. Theses values were higher than 0.5 in the concentration range of $5-14\;molNH_3/kgH_2O$ at 293, 313 K. The absorber for the removal of $CO_2$ in flue gas could be operated without $NH_4HCO_3$ precipitation by using high concentration of ammonia water below these $CO_2$ loading values. The optimum temperature of the ammonia water absorbent for removal of $CO_2$ in flue gas was 297-312 K depending on the concentration of ammonia water.
This study analyzes how much cost the power generation and energy sector in South Korea have to bear due to the introduction of emissions trading scheme during 2016 - 2017. To this end, the data on the seventh basic plan for long-term electricity supply and demand is applied to the electricity market simulation model called M-Core, and then the model forecasts carbon dioxide emissions to compare with the free emission allowances in the first national emissions permit allocation plan. The main results are as follows. Carbon dioxide emissions are estimated to be less in 2016 but more than the free emission allowances in 2017. When the price of the allowances is changed from \10,000/ton to \20,000/ton, the cost of purchasing the allowances is ranged from \70 billion to \140 billion. Under the assumption that CO2 cost is incorporated into the variable cost, a reversal of merit order between coal and LNG generation takes place when the price of the allowances exceeds \80,000/ton.
