A novel manufacturing method for hybrid composites filled with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and aramid fibers is proposed. To disperse the CNTs in the epoxy matrix with the presence of aramid fibers, CNT/polyethyleneoxide (PEO) composites are prepared and utilized because PEO is miscible in the epoxy resin. After thin films are made of the CNT/PEO composite and placed together with the aramid fibers, the epoxy resin is infused to them. The PEO is dissolved in the epoxy and then the CNTs are dispersed in the PEO/epoxy matrix between aramid fibers before the pre-heated matrix is cured. It is found that the PEO is completely miscible with the epoxy resin and CNTs are dispersed well in the space between the aramid fibers.
Fiber fracture is one of the dominant failure phenomena to determine total mechanical properties in composites. Fiber fracture locations were measured by optical microscopic method and acoustic emission (AE) as functions of matrix toughness and surface treatment by the electrodeposition (ED), and then two methods were compared. Two AE sensors were attached on the epoxy specimen and fiber fracture signals were detected with elapsed time. The interfacial shear stress (IFSS) was measured using tensile fragmentation test and AE system. In ED-treated case, the number of the fiber fracture measured by an optical method and AE was more than that of the untreated case. The signal number measured by AE were rather smaller than the number of fragments measured by optical method, since some fiber fracture signals were lost while AE detection. However, one-to-one correspondence between the x-position location by AE and real break positions by optical method was generally established well. The fiber break source location using AE can be a valuable method to measure IFSS for semi- or nontransparent matrix composites nondestructively (NDT).
Since carbon fiber epoxy composite materials have excellent properties for structures due to their high specific strength, high modulus, high damping and low thermal expansion, the hollow shafts made of carbon fiber epoxy composites have been widely used for power transmission shafts for motor vehicles, spindles of machine tools and rollers for film manufacturing. However, the molded composite shafts are not usually accurate enough for mechanical machine elements, which require turning or grinding of composite hollow shafts. In this paper, the grinding characteristics of composite hollow shafts, which are flexible in the radial and circumferential directions, were investiaged experimentally and analytically with respect to the stacking angle, thickness and outer diameter.
Since carbon fiber epoxy composite materials have excellent properties for structures due to their high specific strength, high specific modulus, high damping and low thermal expansion, the hollow shafts made of carbon fiber epoxy composites have been widely used for power transmission shafts for motor vehicles , spindles of machine tools, motor base, bearing mount for tool up and manufacturing. The molded composite machine elements are not usually accurate enough for mechanical machine elements, which require turning drilling , cutting and grinding. The experiment are surface grinding wheel GC60 to the carbon fiber epoxy composite specimen with respect to staking angle [0]nT , [45]nT, [90]nT on the CNC grinding machine. In this paper, the surface grinding characteristics of composite plate, which are surveyed experimentally and analytically with respect to the grinding force, surface roughness and wheel loading according to the variable depth of cut, wheel velocity and table feed rate are investigated.
In the development of a propellant tank using liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen, the improvement of microcrack resistance of carbon/epoxy composites is necessary for the application of a composite material to tank structures. In this research, two types of carbon/epoxy composites with different matrix systems were tested to measure interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), one of the material properties to evaluate fiber-matrix interface adhesion indirectly. Short beam specimens were tested inside an environmental chamber at room temperature(RT) and at cryogenic temperature( - 150 $^{\circ}C$) respectively. Results showed that the matrix system with large amount of bisphenol-A and CTBN modified rubber had good performance at cryogenic temperature.
Nondestructive sensing of electrospun PYDF web and multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/epoxy composites were investigated using electro-micromechanical technique. Electrospinning is a technique used to produce micron to submicron diameter polymeric fibers. Electrospun PVDF web was also evaluated for the sensing properties by micromechanical test and by measurement electrical resistance. CNT composite was especially prepared for high volume contents, 50 vol% of reinforcement. Electrical contact resistivity on humidity sensing was a good indicator for monitoring as for multifunctional applications. Work of adhesion using contact angle measurement was studied to correlate acid-base surface energy between carbon fiber and CNF composites, and will study furher for interfacial adhesion force by micromechanical test.
Since crack detection for laminated composites in-service is effective to improve the structural reliability of laminated composites, it have been tried to detect cracks of laminated composites by various nondestructive methods. An electric potential method is one of the widely used approaches for detection of cracks for carbon fiber composites, since the electric potential method adopts the electric conductive carbon fibers as reinforcements and sensors and the adoption of carbon fibers as sensors does not bring strength reduction induced by embedding sensors into the structures such as optical fibers. However, the application of the electric method is limited only to electrically conductive composite materials. Recently, a piezoelectric method using piezoelectric characteristics of epoxy adhesives has been successfully developed for the adhesive joints because it can monitor continuously the damage of adhesively bonded structures without producing any defects. Polymeric materials for the matrix of composite materials have piezoelectric characteristics similarly to adhesive materials, and the fracture of composite materials should lead to the fracture of polymeric matrix. Therefore, it seems to be valid that the piezoelectric method can be applied to monitoring the damage of composite materials. In this research, therefore, the feasibility study of the damage monitoring for composite materials by piezoelectric method was conducted. Using carbon fiber epoxy composite and glass fiber composite, charge output signals were measured and analyzed during the static and fatigue tests, and the effect of fiber materials on the damage monitoring of composite materials by the piezoelectric method was investigated.
In efforts to characterize and understand the properties and processing of phenylethynyl-terminated imide (LaRC PETI-5, simply referred to as PETI-5) oligomers and polymers as a high-temperature sizing material for carbon fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composites, PETI-5 imidization and thermal curing behaviors have been extensively investigated based on the phenylethynyl end-group reaction. These studies are reviewed here. In addition, the use of PETI-5 to enhance interfacial adhesion between carbon fibers and a bismaleimide (BMI) matrix, as well as the dynamic mechanical properties of carbon/BMI composites, are discussed. Reports on the thermal expansion behavior of intercalated graphite flake, and the effects of exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets (xGnP) on the properties of PETI-5 matrix composites are also reviewed. The dynamic mechanical and thermal properties and the electrical resistivity of xGnP/PETI-5 composites are characterized. The effect of liquid rubber amine-terminated poly(butadiene-co-acrylonitrile) (ATBN)-coated xGnP particles incorporated into epoxy resin on the toughness of xGnP/epoxy composites is examined in terms of its impact on Izod strength. This paper provides an extensive overview from fundamental studies on PETI-5 and xGnP, as well as applied studies on relevant composite materials.
Carbon fiber/epoxy composites using electrodeposited monomeric and polymeric coupling agents were compared with the dipping and the untreated cases. Treating conditions such as time, concentration and temperature were optimized. Four-fibers embedded micro-composites were prepared for fragmentation test. Interfacial properties of four-fiber composites with different surface treatments were investigated with simultaneous acoustic emission (AE) monitoring. The microfailure mechanisms occurring from fiber break, matrix and interlayer crackings were examined by AE parameters and an optical microscope. It was found that interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of electrodeposited carbon fibers was much higher than the other cases under dry and wet conditions. Well separated and different-shaped AE groups occurs for the untreated and ED treated case, respectively.
