Alumina-coated SiC whiskers wee prepared by the calcination (1150$^{\circ}C$, 1h, Ar) of the alumina hydrate layer which was precipitated homogeneously on whisker surface from a solution of Al2(SO4)3 and urea as a precipitant. In addition carbon coated SiC whiskers were prepared by the pyrolysis (1000$^{\circ}C$, 4h Ar) of phenolic resin coated whisker. The effects of coating conditions on the thickness and morphology of the coated layers were examined by SEM and TEM. It was found that Al2O3-coating layers become thinner and more uniform with decreasing the Al2(SO4)3 concentration. Thin (0.075-0.1$\mu\textrm{m}$) and uniformly alumina-coating layers were obtained at the Al2(SO4)3 concentration 0.010mol/l. On the other han carbon-coating layers were uniform but very thin (5-16 nm) in thickness. For thicker carbon-coating layers ethanol as a disperse medium was found to be more efficient compared tousing acetone.
Frictional properties of ultra-thin carbon coatings on silicon wafer were investigated based on Taguchi experimental design method. Sensitivity analysis was performed with normal load, relative humidity, deposition process, and coating thickness as the variables. It was found that despite low thickness, the carbon coating resulted in relatively low friction coefficient. Also, the frictional behavior was affected significantly by humidity and normal load.
Recently nanoscience and nanotechnology have been studied intensively, and many plants, insects, and animals in nature have been found to have nanostructures in their bodies. Among them, lotus leaves have a unique nanostructure and microstructure in combination and show superhydrophobicity and a self-cleaning function to wipe and clean impurities on their surfaces. Coating films with combined nanostructures and microstructures resembling those of lotus leaves may also have superhydrophobicity and self-cleaning functions; as a result, they could be used in various applications, such as in outfits, tents, building walls, or exterior surfaces of transportation vehicles like cars, ships, or airplanes. In this study, coating films were prepared by dip coating method using polypropylene polymers dissolved in a mixture of solvent, xylene and non-solvent, methylethylketon, and ethanol. Additionally, attempts were made to prepare nanostructures on top of microstructures by coating with the same coating solution with an addition of carbon nanotubes, or by applying a carbon nanotube over-coat on polymer coating films. Coating films prepared without carbon nanotubes were found to have superhydrophobicity, with a water contact angle of $152^{\circ}$ and sliding angle less than $2^{\circ}$. Coating films prepared with carbon nanotubes were also found to have a similar degree of superhydrophobicity, with a water contact angle of 150 degrees and a sliding angle of 3 degrees.
Efficiency of a fuel cell is determined by the generated water. If water is not removed sufficiently, water will be accumulated at GDL, which causes flooding. Therefore, water control is regarded as a crucial factor to sustain fuel ell performance. In this study, PTFE coating on the surface of carbon paper was carried out to establish optimum process for hydrophobic treatment of GDL. Carbon paper was immersed at different concentrations of nano-sized PTFE coating solution. Their characteristics were analyzed systematically by FE-SEM, water contact angle, cyclic voltamogam, XRD and FT-IR. The quantitative correlation between the amount of coated-PTFE on a carbon paper and concentration of coating solution was carefully investigated. It is suggested that the amount of PTFE-coating on a carbon paper can be managed by means of controling concentration of coating solution.

This study examined carbon layer coating on silicon carbide (SiC) fibers by utilizing solid-state and wet chemistry routes to confer toughness to the fiber-reinforced ceramic matrix composites, as an alternative to the conventional pyrolytic carbon (PyC) interphase layer. Electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of carbon black nanoparticles using both AC and DC current sources, and the vacuum infiltration of phenolic resin followed by pyrolysis were tested. Because of the use of a liquid phase, the vacuum infiltration resulted in more uniform and denser carbon coating than the EPD routes with solid carbon black particles. Thereafter, vacuum infiltration with controlled variation in phenolic resin concentration, as well as the iterations of infiltration steps, was improvised to produce a homogeneous carbon coating having a thickness of several hundred nanometers on the SiC fiber. Conclusively, it was demonstrated that the carbon coating on the SiC fiber could be achieved using a simpler method than the conventional chemical vapor deposition technique.
Reaction bonded silicon carbide (RBSC) composite for heat-exchanger was fabricated by molten Si infiltration method. For enforcing fracture toughness to reaction bonded silicon carbide composite, the surface of carbon fiber has coating layer by SiC or pyro-carbon. For SiC layer coating, CVD method was used. And for carbon layer coating, the phenol resin was used. In the case of carbon layer coating, fracture toughness and fracture strength were enhancing to 4.4 $MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ and 279 MPa.
In this work, we performed a comparative study examining two coatings on Ti Gr.1 for use in fuel cell bipolar plates. The coatings consisted of carbon black as the conductor along with acrylic polymer and Ti Sol-Gel binder as the binder. Ti Sol-Gel that had precipitated as TiO2 in areas impregnated between carbon black gaps, thereby acting as a binder for carbon black and serving as a polymer coating. Neither of the coatings peeled off during the 90° bend test to check formability. The contact resistance of the TiO2 coating was found to be lower than that of the polymer binder coating. Moreover, due to coating shrinkage (denser) that occurred during the heat treatment process, the TiO2 binder coating showed almost the same level of corrosion resistance, as measured by potentiostatic and EIS tests, despite being thinner than the polymer coating. However, both the polymer binder coating and the TiO2 binder coating had many pores and irregularities internally (around 10 ~ 100 nm) and on the surface (0.1 ~ 2 ㎛). We considered that these pores and irregularities contributed to the lower corrosion resistance.
Carbon thin films were deposited on STS 316L sheets by inductively coupled plasma enhanced magnetron sputtering with or without substrate bias voltage. Typical Raman spectrum for amorphous diamond-like carbon (DLC) was obtained, and the interfacial contact resistance (ICR) was measured to show its conductive nature. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to investigate the corrosion mechanism of the carbon coating under the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) condition. According to the pore-corrosion mechanism, the electrolyte penetrates the carbon coating through the pores and reacts with the substrate. As the substrate corrosion proceeds, the pore enlargement occurs and the surface area of the substrate exposed to the electrolyte. Applicability of the carbon coating for the PEMFC bipolar plate was evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization experiments. Finally, an adhesion problem was briefly considered.
$LiMnBO_3$ was successfully synthesized by a solid-state reaction method both with and without a carbon coating. Adipic acid was used as source material for the carbon coating. $LiMnBO_3$ was composed of many small polycrystalline particles with a size of about 50 - 70 nm, which showed a very even particle morphology and highly ordered crystalline particulates. Whereas the carbon coated $LiMnBO_3$ was well covered by mat-like, fine material consisting of amorphous carbon derived from the carbonization of adipic acid during the synthetic process. Carbon coated cell exhibited improved and stable discharge capacity profile over the untreated. Two cells delivered an initial discharge capacity of 111 and 58 mAh/g for $LiMnBO_3$/C and $LiMnBO_3$, respectively. Carbon coating on the surface of the $LiMnBO_3$ drastically improved discharge capacity due to the improved electric conductivity in the $LiMnBO_3$ material.
Gas barrier coating from dense thin film deposition has been one of the important applications such as food-packaging and organic display. Especially for food-packaging, plastic container has been widely used due to its low price and high through-put in mass production. However, the plastic container with low surface energy like polypropylene (PP) has been limited to apply gas barrier coating. That is because a gas barrier coating could not adhere to PP due to its too low surface energy and high porosity of PP. In this research, we applied carbon coating consisting of Si and O as an interlayer between silicon oxide (SiOx) and PP. A carbon layer was found to provide better adhesion, which was experimentally proved by oxygen transmission rate (OTR) and SEM images. However, we also found that there is a limitation in the maximum thickness of a carbon layer and SiOx film due to their high stress level. For this conflict, we obtain the optimal thickness of a carbon layer and SiOx film showing optimal gas barrier property.
